They use chemicals like lye etc in r sewers in the US to dissolve stuff like condoms and baby wipes. There also a gigantic blade system that looks like a fan that chops stuff to bits. Seems the UK needs to do some upgrades

They do have those systems but downstream, also, there's limited space in certain parts so upgrades are difficult, the answer is to stop shoving stuff down the drains which shouldn't be there.

I agree 100%. It's those rude and selfish people who tend to ruin things for others. It says not to flush them right on the package. I used to work with a girl who flushed them and would say "who gives a f*#k. That's what those sewer guys get paid for. This just ensures they have a job. Like there is nothing else to do. Would be more time for prevention and cleaning if it weren't for the "stupid" blockages. Maybe these moms and grandmas and aunties etc need to go to work with these guys just once.

Or restaurants should be responsible. Our restaurant saves the fat and gets it taken away. We earn a few thousand per tonne of cardboard waste we sell so the cost of taking oil and fat away isn't a big hit to our expenses.

@@TheKopakah there are contraptions that can be built in the shelves under the sink or next to a dishwasher. There the size of regular cardboard boxes used for moving. Here in Germany grease traps are mandatory on large kitchens and for restaurants... These traps can be built into regular manholes as well... Germany has some quite narrow roads and crammed cities as well and as far as I know they figured out how to squeeze them in somewhere... Either in a restaurants basement, in a manhole outside or built into a shelf in the kitchen

25-30k Basic salary!! I’ve worked for 2 different water utilities and I can tell you that this is what they pay the hard working men who do this job. The workers are rarely thanked or acknowledged for their hard work, and can take years to gain a pay rise. People have no idea how they are treated, unless in the industry themselves.

Why do they allow 90 tons of fat a year to go into the sewers in the first place? Why not storage vats at the back of every restaurants and fast food joints. Why not every home a 5 gallon bucket ,when full put at curb ounce a month for pick/up, the same with the restaurants when there full, phone in and have them come and suction it out. Turn it into some bio/fuel or something. Im no scientist or engineer but with today's technology there must be a better way. M.

I would advise these people who work in this type of smelly environment to have a warm Dettol bath and sit in the Dettol bath (make sure you put 3-6 capfull of Dettol in your bath) for 20-30 mins and then have a good shower with Radox or Lynx shower gel, get the fragranced lynx and scrub well with a flannel or one of them scrubbing nets...
