Bauer Powerfly VS TUUK Lightspeed Edge Holder Review!!

In this video I discuss the differences I’ve noticed between the new Powerfly holder and the TUUK Lightspeed Edge holder from Bauer. This is my honest opinion as I am not sponsored by Bauer. There aren’t enough hockey product reviews, and even fewer give HONEST opinions rather than hyping up the products or giving basic specs.
The upgrade to the Powerfly holder is worth it to me as there is a noticeable increase in performance. Whether or not you decide to upgrade to the Hyp2rlite / X5 Pro or just buy the holder/steel separately and go from there.. it’s up to you! 😊

We did some testing of the Power Fly, Tuuk Edge and XS holders. The XS holder is the stiffest with the most neutral feel (Most wanted a forward pitch added to their profile). The Tuuk Edge was the most flexible and the Power Fly is a mixture of stiff up from and soft in the back, which some folks aren't crazy about. The Tuuk Edge holder still reigns supreme in the opinion of the people who acted as my testing subjects. Of course it's all subjective.

Great analysis! Yes. I noticed the neutral pitch of FT6P with the XS holder compared to the Tuuk/PowerFly. I noticed the stiffer post in the PowerFly holder on my first skate and I loved it. I’d switch my tuuk holders but it’s not worth the hassle. I have tons of LS steel and there is a way to make that steel fit the PF holder but ofc the work is going to have to be put in and it’ll void the warranty lol. But also, I’m in favor of the XS holder because of the STEP steel that comes with it and the quality. It’s just unmatched. Ever since Bauer released their black steel (LS5 at least) they mentioned not going so deep on hollow since the edge is so great. I never felt that was true 😂 at least not until I tried STEP. I’ve been slowing trying to move to a 1/2 hollow. I’m most comfortable at 7/16. When I skated that hollow in STEP, I felt like I could have gone to 1/2.. amazing bite. Now that I’m back in hyperlites (og), I skated 7/16.. and I was slipping. So I resharpened it to 3/8.. I’m still slipping 😂 so I’ll be going 5/16. This could be happening bc it’s the carbonlite steel. If I try the regular pulse with some extra weight it might feel “normal.” Any thoughts?

@@Chrissy1011 Hi Chrissy! All of your feedback is valid and I’ve noticed much of the same. If you’re asking my humble opinion, I believe that BladeTech is the best steel on the market currently. And this is coming from a guy who thought Step Steel BlackSteel was the best for years. And Step is definitely better than those other options you mentioned. Here’s why BladeTech is the best. It’s tall steel but not as tall as Step. This keeps the turning radius that you like but reduces the wobbly feeling you get with new Step Steel because of how tall it is. The toe and heel of BladeTech is more radiused and requires less effort to profile and allows you to just skate. It has a spring system in the toe area. BladeTech says it makes you faster but really the main benefit is that it take pressure off feet, ankles, knees and hips which is important to me because I have two replaced hips. Lol. Lastly, the actual steel is much harder than that of Step or anyone else. This just means that the edge sticks around a lot longer. The price is also the same as Step Steel BlackSteel. How does the mach compares to the hyperlite 2? I tried the hyperlite 2 but the plastic eyelets stitching was rubbing badly against my ankle to the point I had to return them

Hey! So strangle the Mach fits me better/I like the way it fits my foot more than a vapor skate. It’s very comfortable. The eyelets shouldn’t rub like the Hyperflex eyelets. It has a better wrap than the Hyp2rlite.

Personally, yes. I like them so much that I might buy and put the Powerfly holder on any new skates I get.. including ccms 🤷‍♀️

Right?? 😂 I’ve seen pics of TUUKs on ccm or true skates so it’s not unheard of lol. To be fair though, I’ll try/review the FT6 Pro without changing the holder. If I like the skates and want to keep them, I’ll change to the Powerfly holder once they’re in stores 👍

Re the runner: Under the "innovation" umbrella Bauer continues to reinvet the wheel with cosmetic changes that render old product incompatible with new products. So all these great 3rd party companies making runners will now be scrumbling to support the new holder... Not to mention all these folks who already invested in 3rd party runners.

Yes. I had reached out to a third party company and they had asked me for pictures of the blade to move their process (making the blades for Powerfly) along quicker. I wonder when Bauer will stop making/selling their LS Edge steel and will put the Powerfly holder on almost the entire lineup (probably not ltp/lts and lowest model).. I guess we will see lol🤷‍♀️

are you able to put the powerfly holder on skates other then the hyperlite2? like are you able to put it on the machs in the video

Hi! 😊 Yes, it’s possible. Bauer sells the holders separately. Take it to your local hockey store for them to do, they might sell it too. I’d put it on my Machs but I honestly might not use them that much. I’m not sure whether I’ll keep or sell them before the 2024 Supreme skates come out.

The skates are super comfortable, but I have to admit, I'm disappointed with the exterior build quality. Even blocking just one shot, the paint job immediately starts to wear off. I've only had the Hyperlites 2 for four months, but I have a feeling that if I give it a full year, the Bauer logo will be completely gone.

"How do the holders feel on ice?".....uh to stiff. Just recently swapped the old Lightspeed tuuk back on my Hyperlite2's and its so much better. With how stiff the Vapor boot already is it felt so unneeded to have that stiff of a Tuuk (The Powerfly) to go with it, just felt way to overkill on stiffness. Able to rock the Carbon-lites on the Hyperlite 2's now as well. Not a Fan of this new Powerfly, looks like a tuuk that was meant to go on a childrens skate.

Thanks for your comment! It’s interesting that you find the holders too stiff. I loved it at first coming from the Mach. I’ve been using the FT6 Pro as my main pair for a few weeks now and when I switched back to the Hyp2, I think I also experienced what you’re talking about. My movements felt off. I really thought it was just the sharpening or the difference in boot construction but it could’ve been that extra stiffness in the holder. Im actually considering switching the Powerfly holder out with the xs holder just for the step steel because the quality is unmatched. Wow, it holds a sharpen for a long time with very frequent use. But tbh.. the jetspeeds could REALLY use the carbon-lites lol

Seems like the blade of a twig could press the power fly trigger?

You need a good squeeze to get the steel out. If the blade of a stick were to hit the trigger, it would just hit it. The trigger wouldn’t move. 👍😁

I have skated Custom+, Prolite 3, Externo, E-Pro, Graf NT3/5000, and now this Powerfly. This Powerfly is by far the worst holder I have ever skated on. In my opinion, the E-Pro was my favorite. Very stiff, allows you to cut the ice quickly and hard. The second best was the Graf. Powerfly felt like I was poking a bar of soap. It is as if Bauer decided to go back to Custom+.

meh, imo > 10 year old LS 2 Holder with Step Steel is still better (or at least comparable) than LS Edge or this Powerfly with Bauer steel. What's the innovation?
