I don’t think Charlie’s mom is as bad as people think I believe she has also felt something been going on with Charlie and he won’t tell her which most likely makes her feel like a failure as a parent so then to block that out she focuses on the things she can control and then becomes overly controlling

I’ve seen a lot of split in response, by age of the viewer: The older crowd see her trying to teach responsible choices and ensuring he has as good a future as he can (focusing on school when needed, etc), where the younger tend to side with Charlie, dismissing other concerns. In the comics and short stories it’s clear she didn’t have a good relationship with her parents, so lacked a good role model for teaching this aspect of being an independent adult. That sabotages a lot of her attempts to instill responsible choices on Charlie’s part fall flat. We see a quick change in their relationship when she is given a way she and Charlie can connect over his mental health, and the clue to be notice when he’s having a rough day. Compare to Nick’s mother, who can see quickly how he’s doing and even hints that he could tell her more (eg the car scene after the fight).
