EXCERPT FROM SCENE 2 {Palace of Fleur-de-Lys, Engagement}
Preparations for the engagement of Fleur-de-Lys and Phoebus are underway. Phoebus enters the room. He is distracted: the memories of Esmeralda do not give him peace. Not noticing the scarf she gave to her beloved, Fleur-de-Lys turns to Phoebus with a reproach. But he presents her a ring, and her sadness is dispelled. Escorted by Gringoire and her friends, Esmeralda enters. She tells Fleur-de-Lys her fortune, and then dances for the guests admiring her grace. In the midst of the fun, Esmeralda sees Phoebus and realizes that he is the fiance of Fleur-de-Lys . Heartbroken, she decides to leave the party and puts on a scarf. When Fleur-de-Lys sees her gift on the gypsy, she can’t hold back her tears and throws away the engagement ring. General confusion. Esmeralda leaves. Phoebus rushes after her - the one to whom his heart belongs.
