AS a story oriented Bayonetta player (yeah I know, Im starving here), this hit the nail on the head I think. I want this game to get the support it deserves for being such a fun, frenetic, wacky and beautiful game, but it felt like half of the writers adored the Bayoverse and did it justice and the other half took what those half of the writers did and said 'No. Put Thanos in there with lots of pew pew scifi and make him super duper powerful or I don't wanna play anymore. AND DON'T LAUGH HES MY SUPER SERIOUS BIG BAD OC. Also Fey now because I said so." And expected us to respect that. I want it to get support so it gets the sequels it deserves...but I want to find out who greenlit some of this stuff and ask them if they wanna work on another game series maybe. They didn't seem like they wanted to have fun.

"AS a story oriented Bayonetta player (yeah I know, Im starving here)" Yeah I'm sorry, WAT? lol. Maybe I'm not far enough into the first but this is a sentence I never expected to see written unironically. Unless I missed your irony ;) Even in the first (I'm only like 3 missions in), I have no clue what story has kept you going (lol). Maybe I'll find out... But otherwise, what you and Dunkey are saying makes sense. I just started playing Bayonetta 1 for the first time (due to encountering kind of cult like appreciation for it online), expecting wacky and shameless, but this shit is *seriously wacky and shameless* , more so than I expected, with less story than I expected... It's a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure-type game. As a story oriented player in general, Bayonetta doesn't do that so far - *and that's totally fine and even a positive* in this game for me. I feel like story that takes itself too seriously just takes away from that wacky, flamboyant, shameless angle, which is the primary strength - the spectacle of it all. This game (and I assume the series too) is like a shitpost. I want it to be coherent enough to make me laugh, but I don't need or even want it to try too hard to deliver a message.
@MetanteiTriforce Жыл бұрын
@@mrahzzz Welcome to the Bayoverse! It's a really fun ride! TBH this'll probably make more sense when you've gotten further through the game, but essentially, I think we all agree on the same point--the chaotic, barely sensical story of Bayonetta is a good deal of its charm, and no one really signed on for a deep and linear story though it's nice to get nuggets of delicious world building where we can. The complaint tends to come less from the wackiness of the 3rd game--the wackiness is one of the things that the game has going for it in spades, we all know and love that vibe--it's more that of the story that is there, the new stuff completely undercuts and often disservices what's already been established. The story not making sense is not just forgivable but embraced--but the story that is there harshing the buzz of the rest of the games? That's, more or less, the issue here. It could have worked, until it kicked our collective fun in the nuts for the sake of false stakes that isn't true to any of the rest of the series. Still, it really was a fun ride till the last half an hour or so! And the new Bayonetta Origins does a good job of showing the players there's good faith left. So enjoy the ride, knowing the road's getting paved ahead of you as we speak!

He had very little to say that was positive, and what little positivity he had to offer was directly tied to one or more of the major negatives he brought up, such as how he stated it has a lot of creative and wacky ideas, but manages to make all of them boring. When 30% of the game is combat and 60% is Platforming/Minigame/Exploring I can’t exactly recommend the game and say it’s “fun”. On point review! Just finished the game last night and was overwhelmed by the incredible last stage and its storytelling there - which was surprising considering how underwhelming the storytelling was everywhere else (besides the opening stage). I missed all the hilarious interactions bayonetta used to have with her companions, how the game used a narrative to drive you forward, and how precise the combat wanted you to be. In this game, just like you, I found myself getting platinum and pure platinum medals by choosing the longer range melee weapons and spamming away (while not being able to see my character 25% of the time). Still, the third best bayonetta game is still way better than most other fighting games though! As a longtime fan, I was just hoping for more.

The story isn’t bad, you simply don’t understand it. Something being confusing at first doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing, it’s just a lot of info to take in and break down. Isn’t just your fault though, this is the case with 90% of other people who speak on it as they likely either haven’t even taken the time to read through the lore that the game goes to great lengths to provide the player thoroughout all 3 installments, or only play Bayonetta because it’s an attractive woman killing Angels and Demons.. which is fine, but when your perspective on the series is so surface level it really hurts truer fans of the series when people are just flinging around misconceptions and accepting their lack of knowledge on the franchise as fact. The majority of the lore you piece together comes from the actual game menu books such as Hierarchy of Laguna, Lemegeton’s Guidebooks, etc etc.. and it’s even sadder because I can almost guarantee you that majority of the Bayonetta fanbase hardly even know these books exist to be read through in the first place. The whole Multiverse story has been alluded at since even the very first Bayonetta. It’s getting a bit annoying to see so many people speak so confidently on a story they know extremely little about.

diehard bayonetta fan but plat really dropped the ball on this one for me. bayo 1's combat was the perfect foundation for a deep combat system to evolve through a whole franchise. i don't really understand why people aren't generally super pissed about the change from weapon pairs to having only one weapon usable at a time. that was the best and most unique thing about bayonetta's combat. could you imagine all the weapons they give you in bayo 3, and on top of that being able to use them in pairs, and on top of that monster summons???? bayo 3 could have been amazing /:

Just finished the game and I really enjoyed it. Dunk, your comments are fair and warranted. I myself wished Viola's witch time mechanic was reworked so enemies wouldn't bounce 50 feet away from me after a successful parry. Story writing in any media is hard and is probably most difficult in video games. I think different kinds of games demand different ways of storytelling. The Yakuza games can fit a whole soap opera within 100 hours of cut scenes and the Legend of Zelda BOTW can fit 100 hours of storytelling with no cut scenes. Platinum Games did setup their cut scenes to have a lot explosive action, but they also included moments of silence where characters exchanged glances and the story writers trusted the player would understand the sentiment communicated there. Could the story content be improved? Yeah it could. Should the game omit the wonky platforming sections? Yeah probably. Should the game omit the game play systems that aren't the main combat system? Maybe, but I did like playing as huge Godzilla monsters because its fun and shows Bayonetta is a beast. I could not help but shed a tear at the end of this game's conclusion, but I do appreciate your criticisms Dunkey as they are insightful and are intended to help future games become better.

@@carlitos.reviews You've expressed pretty much exactly my thoughts, I enjoyed the experience from start to finish. I liked the new additions and actually didn't mind the exploring and platforming because you get to experiment with the movement capabilities of your demons and not only the combat part. As a huge Bayonetta fan that just completed 3, yeah. You right. There are some incredibly hype moments, but those are ones like the first time she goes DO IO BAYONETTA. Not only was the story basically an overly long fetch quest, the twists were all predictable as hell, there was not a single dramatic reveal throughout the entire story that wasn't telegraphed long beforehand. During chapter 8/14 I messaged my friend what I thought the ending would be, and two days later messaged them "I was right and I hate it." It's like they looked at the first two, and concluded that they could get away with a cliche filled plot without the characters and general fun that carried the first two.

This is exactly why, as cool as giant monsters definitely are on a purely conceptual level, they're usually not a very good idea in actual gameplay practice for a lot of reasons. If you aren't absolutely certain you can nail it, I'd say it's better to avoid monsters that are drastically huger than the player character entirely. A fun fight always beats an annoying fight, no matter how much of a flashy setpiece that annoying fight is. While the gameplay was always what had me coming back to the first Bayonetta, the mystery and intrigue of the plot was what made it a good story. It had a good balance between being fun and flirty and feeding you pieces of the puzzle. You're right there alongside amnesiac Bayonetta seeing each event/memory and wondering what it means. Who is this vague creepy voice I keep hearing in my head, what are the "eye's of the world", what is this weird cult town about and why do I have memories of being here before? Why is gary oak challenging me to a pokemon battle every other chapter and why is he a hot blonde dommy mommy? Why is there a little girl who looks just like me. Am I my own mom? I don't want to be that guy but multiverse stories are almost always the same kind of garbage. They try to make it seem like there's some greater evil that's always the most boring villain in the series and none of those more interesting villains you fought before matter at all. People who write these stories seem to forget that little things are what give life to a world. The average person doesn't give a shit about the greater good or the universe. We'd much rather watch the more down to earth struggles of a well written character or two. They could have made it about Viola as she tries to live in the shadow of her incredible mom while trying to revive the Umbra witch clan. She has a heavy burden to bear being the only successor to the last of the previous generation of witches while still being a novice herself. As the worlds affairs get out of hand, maybe she has to find other people with potential to join her cause. Without sages and witches, the angels and demons would be free to wage war on earth and the new generation would stand united as one clan to stop them. I don't know it's an idea. I'm also not a fan of the giant monster fights when your character is basically an ant on the screen. At least in the first Bayonetta when you fight the Cardinal virtues the focus is always on Her. It's kind of a problem in a game where you are rewarded for not taking damage and dodging when you can't see your character in a fight.

The average person cares average the greater good but they can't imagine universal or multiversal much less global stakes. The problem is that they're using a generic serious bad guy for this, Green Goblin was a great villain in No Way Home and that was a multiverse story.

Multiverse stories are always huge cop outs found at the creative end of a franchise.

I totally get it. The fight with super madama butterfly where she forces the creatures eye open and the little bayo on her shoulder punches the shit out of the eye was when I went "Oh man, more of THAT"

I thought that the great stuffs about multiverse stories are less about the villain causing it and more about the characters, like power rangers or kamen riders interacting with one another. They're often not A-tier plot, but we know the characters so they can be pretty fun to watch.

what also kind of harms it is that the enemy is really just 1 guy and you don't really destroy them in a graphic or silly ways as before, like the angels used to get messed up as the fight goes on until getting finished off gruesomely/humiliatingly! the slime guys just... idk more video gamingly explode. so do the bayonettas. the abilities they give you are cool as heck though

you can tell that Nintendo exerted alot more of their influence on this game. instead of Bayonetta getting more naked as you do a bigger combo she just transforms into a devil trigger form.

omg yes. Old games had Angels loosing armour and skin, and get all bloody. You can visually tell how easy you were whooping their butts.

Singularity and his homonculus drones were so boring. The designs of all of these enemies were a huge step down from the angels and demons. In the first 2 games fighting felt like dancing and the enemies were designed to be good dance partners. In this game, it seems like the enemies are just waiting to be kicked around by the large demons.

@@zengamer21 Yeah I really liked their designs but they were a bit too stiffy for me. Would have liked if they had more personality in their movements. Maybe they could have animations based around traditional hindi dances.
