I'm pretty sure it's a direct reference. Bayonetta even says something similar to what Dante says when he meets the Phantom Spider for the first time. Bayonetta even does the knocking thing Dante did. If that's a surprise, you'd be surprised by how many DMC references are in the Bayonetta games.
