In my 48 year career as a high school band director I programmed very few grade 4 pieces, and this was one of them! The year we played it, I had all the horses to do the job, and everyone had a great time. Compositionally, this is one of the finer pieces of writing for band, with interesting and challenging parts throughout the ensemble, and both busy and lyrical styles woven together in masterful fashion. It is also a great way to introduce fugal composition to band students. If I ever get to meet Brant Karrick, I will tell him how much his piece meant to me and my band!
