Very needed topic. Just a small note: The scientist who studied the embryology in the Quran was Prof. Keith L. Moore. Dr. Maurice Bucaille was a doctor who studied the mummy of the pharoah discovered and wrote the book called "The Bible, the Quran and the Science". Just if anyone wants to know more about them.

Please please continue this topic as a series for the sake of young generations who have and ARE consuming this pop psychology on social media today. Its next to impossible not to be influenced by it. I don’t know anybody who is bringing awareness on this topic from an islamic point if view. Personally this was eye opening for me, even though I’ve tried my best to take all those terms with a grain of salt it has still had an influence over my perspectives then I can’t imagine people’s mindset who take every word of todays instagram psychology. Please do more of this. Jazakallah khair

This is even a worse problem in the desi world where people don't fully understand these terms and just use them to show how fluent they are. I've encountered so many desis who use the word "depression" when they mean they're just sad. I didn't want to take this in this direction but I believe if more Islamic teachers were as articulate as Ustadh our problems would be less. Each time I listen to Ustadh my Iman goes up and I reflect on myself, my relationship with Allah and it humbles me.

Subhan Allah. Very suitable video for the current time. A lot of us use these terms carelessly, yet would dislike it if someone used it on us. Also nowadays people care so much about 'self happiness' they justify their behaviour with it. Whereas we have been instructed on how to treat certain people even if they 'cross the line ' etc. Alhamdullilah for Islam truly. Its the foundation we need.

I learnt about attachment issues in my childhood, attachment with people/world, which then led me back to the most true and unwavering attachment which is to Allah. To just use psychology can be quite dangerous and slippery slope to losing faith. My advice for a Muslim who is seeing a therapist or counsellor for their mental health issues or certain problems, and if its with the right intention to better oneself, alongside it constantly ask and seek Allah for guidance. Keep to your obligations, InsyaAllah true healing will come.

I've been through both, and I personally have felt the difference and the example he used of Prophet Yusuf as and Prophet Ibrahim as, it has crossed my mind too. In my experience, when I was going through psychology to understand my situation and healing, it helped me in personality development but I ended up being more frustrated that why this happened to me or I'm like this because of this person, I ended up putting blame on others. But Alhamdulillah after some months I got reminded again that Nothing happens without Allah's will and it's so soothing and comforting for me and gave me peace that I was looking for by the means of healing. I can totally relate to the topic that psychology can be good yet it can become dangerous if u r not seeing the purpose.

Both Islamic teachings and knowledge of psychology are important to navigate relationships and adversaries. Cycles of abuse do exist. With me, I suffered years under mistreatment from family members. And while Islamic teachings offered solace and guidance to be patient, it wasn’t until I learned about human psychology that I was able to fully understand what was going on. Some people are unhealthy to be close to and they may or may not even change. “Boundaries”are important to help preserve self and others’ wellbeing. Understanding patterns of behaviour is important, all within the scope of Islamic teachings. May Allah bless us with guidance. Oh Allah let us be from those who see the truth for what it is and follow it successfully, and see falsehood as falsehood and stay away from it. Allahumma teach us what benefits us and make us benefit from what you taught us and increase us in knowledge, Ameen.

Beautiful lecture Alhamdulilah! When you read and study the Quran, you start seeing the world through the eyes of the Quran. That's the beauty of Islam. This lecture was truly helpful in understanding the importance of remembering Allah in times of difficulties, hardships, and sadness. As humans, we have a tendency to fall into the pits of deep emotional states and become an easy target for shaytan, but alternatively, we should embrace these challenges and put our faith in Allah that whatever difficulty we're going through at the moment, will pass. It is Allah who allows us to go through such life experiences so that we can learn and grow. Alhamdulillah for everything that Allah has bestowed upon us in the shape of health, wisdom, wealth, and life experiences.

I absolutely agree with Ustadh. Everything is a guidance and ultimately contains a blessing from Allah. We work through things seeking from Allah guidance and help.. We shouldn't bandy around terms without real knowledge. That said, there is actually a phenomenon of misuse of position and authority, misuse of Islam to abuse. There really are selfish manipulative people preying on others among Muslims too. We may not throw out terms to judge others. But we can learn from what people have experienced with toxic people and learn how to protect ourselves. Many of us raised to serve abusive parents never understood healthy boundaries, self worth or autonomy. We were guilted to obey, to our own detriment, even past adulthood. The popularity of these terms also relates to a movement of people seeking to reclaim their intrinsic worth, freedom from abuse. So, more nuanced. There may be people lightly misapplying terminology. But there are also people who truly experienced what is discussed. We are not worshipping our feelings. We are rebalancing from one extreme and seeking a way back to Allah free of oppressive people. And there are many Duas reflecting these very yearnings.
@aimanamin3993

This is what I was thinking. Psychology can help people reclaim their sense of self worth and help them recognise toxicity around them. It is not a black and white situation. There are positive aspects of psychology which can help us to improve ourselves.

Thanks Shiekh Nouman on re-highlighting the stories of the Quran (e.g. Yusuf with his father and his brothers) on how to forgive and re-concile relationships among kinship and not follow modern day methodologies of using terms such as "gas-lighting", "narcissistic", "toxic" at our families. That above including even if our "enemies" are own bethren/family we must keep them close at heart to us, except only if they are physically violent. Plus thanks again Sheikh Nouman that we remember all of these are in the Quran and its translations readily available in multiple languages left only for us to practise.

I agree with ustadh almost entirely because pop psychology is an injustice to the study of psychology at large. you cannot sell bite-sized pieces of information wrapped up as ‘content’. but where i disagree with ustadh is that if a proper study of psychology is undertaken, in my limited experience, it actually aligns with islamic principles (again, it is about having the intention to look for the signs of Allah). no psychologist ever says to argue with or label a narcissist, infact the way people are taught to deal with a narcissistic parent is very similar to how prophet ibrahim (as) dealt with his dad: gracefully but also walking away. like any other subject, it is imp to do the heavy-lifting with psychology if we wish for it to align with our deen/faith. may Allah grant us all healing and a sound understanding of His deen, and may every road we take lead us to Him!
