I have a question for anyone. So I found the Bflat Dorian scale to fit, and not the Bflat major. It definitely doesn't sound like an Aflat major tune because of the root tone but it still falls on that scale. I guess I don't understand how something could use two different scales but be in the same key. I'm probably missing something but would it be more accurate to say this is in Bflat Dorian or is that extenuous?
@guitareimprovisation3 жыл бұрын
It's a good question, and a very common on. I have a video about it but it's in french : kzbin.info/www/bejne/gneqg3homqeVbsk Here's my anwser : the key chord here is Bb7, not Ab, hence all the notes you play sound relatively to this Bb7 (Ab sounds like a m7 and Bb like a root). Thinking "the Ab major scale" doesn't help you memorizing the feeling (or "role") that each note will have, but thinking everything relatively to Bb (the Bb dorian mode) will help you. So you have to learn this dorian mode like if it's a new scale, and memorise the interval and sound of each note. For this topic, the theory that you know doesn't help you because you think about "the major scale this mode comes from" and this is something you want to slightly get away from :-) I hope this helps
