I often dreamed of working in that archive strange as it may seem. I always loved working with and handling 35/16mm film and using pro tape formats not to mention a big interest in archive film. I did in fact get a job offer from the BBC back in about 1987 but had to decline because twin daughters arrived and l couldn’t take a pay cut. Always regretted that.😢 (not the twins)

What a load of nonsense, the BBC archive is a great national resource? Yeah it'd be even better if the BBC hadn't wiped a load of important programs in the 60's, 70's and 80's, imagine the mentality that the tape was more valuable than sat early episodes of Doctor who, shameful vandalism.

How were people to know those programmes would become so valuable when they were made? They couldn't see into the future. Can you tell me which programmes showing this week will become classics in 2062? Be reasonable.

I recall that Pete and Dud shows were taped over and lost, even though Pete offered to pay for them. Petty BBC politics!

The early episodes were probably in black and white, making it impossible to reuse the tapes for color recording. Quadruplex tapes from AMPEX are said to have cost around $300 at the end of the 1960s. Copying (preserving) would only have become cheap in 1989, when durable Betacam SP cassettes came onto the market.
