This is the best Steven Spielberg interview I've ever seen. Brilliant questions and a perfect picture of where he was at in his career as the '80s ended and the '90s began.

Thanks for uploading this, I remember watching this back in the day- because I recall that comment when he rates Die Hard as a great film from a young new filmmaker.

Barry Norman's ,Film series was essential viewing when I was a teen and a young adult . Every time I hear the intro music I feel happy and sad at the same time. RIP Barry Norman, Jonathan Ross is a pale imitation and he knows it.

Crazy to think he directed Jaws, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones 1-3 and E.T. up to this point but the 90's is arguably his best decade.

I don't think so. He did his two big Oscar darling movies in the '90s. But he also made his two most bloated, pointless special effects movies, Lost World and Hook. The '80s had the Indiana Jones trilogy, E.T. and Color Purple. 1993 may be his most successful year with Jurassic Park and Schindler's List, but in the '80s, Raiders and E.T. were not only blockbusters but critically acclaimed and earned some awards as well. Also, as he stated in this interview, he was most active at Amblin in the '80s. And that's when they made a big string of popular films. Once he handed the company off to Kennedy and Marshall, they made a lot more insignificant films.

@@BlookbugIV We'll see. To me, out of 4 spielberg films, one is a masterpiece, 2 are very good films, and one is crap. Maybe there was a bit more crap in these last 7-10 years, but I hope The Fabelmans will be at least back on the "Very good" category. Can't say I cared much for Bridge of Spies (felt like a deluxe version of a random documentary on the history channel), hated Ready Player One, did not care to see War Horse, the BFG and The Post (althought I think this one is probably pretty good), and I didn't like anything besides the actress who plays the female lead role's sister and the directing of dance scenes in West Side Story. But then I was not a fan of the original either.

@@SPT1 I love the original WSS. I feel that the remake was the worst kind of vanity from this guy, and that he’s only being indulged because of his campaign of sickening virtue signaling, not at all because he’s given us something of any value. I was also fairly entertained by Bridge of Spies, but it’s nothing you’d tell anyone they need to see. But Ready Player One, I’m not being hyperbolic when I say - one of the worst movies I’ve seen in my life (discounting low-budget howlers of course), it’s almost indescribably awful. He’s done.

Thank god he chose Indy 3 over Rainman. The latter won the awards, but the former lives on in legend in a way the Oscar luvvie has largely been forgotten.

It’s a testimony to Spielberg that this is such a good interview … looking back I do find that Barry Norman seems to want to zone in on negative and provocative lines of questioning. Ditto the Stallone interview around the time of Rocky. You have to very skilled as an interviewee to come out punching.
