A magnificent coverage of not only the long history of these trains that have survived in the mountainous regions of India, but also an insight of the people who depend on the railways in this beautiful, yet difficult part of the sub-continent. The railways and the communities are all entwined, and together display a determination to succeed. And they accept their situation happily it seems. May they not succumb to the empty and treacherous lifestyles paraded as idealistic outside their paradisaic mountain home.

From the mid to the late 1940,s on many occasions I travelled by this wonderful little train from the plains to my school in Ootacamund, and then back home for the holidays. This film brings back many very happy memories of Ooty and the train journey in those days. Visiting South India I travelled on the train around 18 years ago, and again 5 years ago, obviously a lot has changed but it was still a great experience.

A beautiful documentary by the BBC. Trains are at the heart of the modern India history and a vital source of employment for countless 1000's of Indians. I have travelled many 1000's of km on India's railways and it nurtured a love of this fascinating country. The Nilgiri ride is just one of those more memorable occasions. Felt almost homesick watching this.

This is a good stroll down memory lane. Been there seen that done that (Ooty and Coonorr) I rode in the cabin of a steam engine from Ernakulam South to Jolarpettai and had charge of the whistle chord as a five year old (1959). I drove a diesel engine from Bangarpet to Marikuppam. (1968))

A good enlightening documentary on what the the old steam engines of yesteryear still mean to those for whom the railways are not just a means to a livelihood but a passionate calling. I was surprised to note the casual and indifferent approach to the maintenance and development and more importantly, the safety aspect of both train and personnel; depending wholly on the love and dedication of the employees. I would liked to have known about the history of its conception and construction and the challenge of developing the special locomotive needed for this phenomenal project. These engines were designed and built by the Swiss if I recall
