Old BBC One clock into the BBC News at 10 o'clock, to mark the end of analogue TV in the Northern Ireland. An evening of nostalgia leading up to the turning off of the final analogue signals in the UK. Recorded from satellite.

I bet the designers of this clock in 1997 didn't envisage its retro use 15 years later!

btw clocks have 2 types.

I suppose that the clock would have been accurate only on analogue, anyway.

True but they did have two clocks for NET1 in those days, one in the NTA and one in the DTA for the analogue and digital station outputs respectively. Both were called GNAT. The issue was they would have to transmit things on NET1 DTT about 1.5 seconds earlier than NET1 to compensate for digital delays. That being said if they were to bring the clock back today they could just offset it so when it reached people's TVs it would be 'live' - there was no such solution available between 1997 and 2002.

Did BBC really have 4:3-continuity untill the shutdown of analogue tv? Or was it just BBC Northern Ireland?
@moramento226 жыл бұрын
mikedk2100 No, only this clock is in 4:3 as it was used in 1997. BBC decided that on the night that analogue is switched off it's going to go down the memory lane and use some old clocks and idents.

Great idea from BBC. Wish the Danish television had done something like that when analogue TV was switched of in Denmark :)

The actual switch on BBC Northern Ireland is a great watch too, especially that Northern Ireland was the last area of UK to switch to digital. Here you can see it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enmyiouIaspqaLc

Very nice to see the old spinning-earths just before they turned off. I haven't put the Danish analogue switch-off on KZbin, but someone else has. Not much down-memory-lane about it but for one night we actually had a host in-vision between programs and she counted down before a technician pulled the plug as you can see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5icd4xnab1qorc

mikedk2100 Yeah, it isn't a trip down memory lane, but it's very interesting as well to see the plug being actually pulled and see all the equipment.
