It's an interesting experiment but I do feel the turntablists need to think outside the box and leave aside the drops and classic battle cuts and focus on using the actual turntable as if it was an instrument, if we really want to convice other musicians about our validity to interpret true music... that is creating new sounds (not dropping existing sounds) and flowing with the melodies and music, instead of simply scratching and producing effects. If DJs want to start something new, they must leave the oldschool scratch style aside and use the turntable in a whole innovative way imho. Otherwise, it will always sound artificial and unconnected, as most people realized. Just my 2 cents.

I wonder if they could do something like live recording of the orchestra with the ability to play back and manipulate the recording while it's being made. Like, you hear the orchestra play something and then you immediately hear the turntablist manipulate what the orchestra played, then it goes back to the orchestra and the process repeats. That would be cool.

I didnt like it. DONT SHOOT ME! i love both classical and turntablism but Switch didnt do it for me. his timing was all out. he kept doing generic battle style cuts instead of making it flow along with the rest of the music. pitch bending was nice but still wonky at times. Dont get me wrong i couldnt do better!!! Im only whinging because its a big chance to get something like that over to a public ear nevermind a classical audience at the Proms. Could have been better, thats all im saying....

Sigh... said a bedroom DJ. No offense n all and hope none taken, but lend more credit than the dues you gave him. Your BBC is far more progressive than our CBC in Canada would ever allow. You kinda miss a point on how you should be grateful how the UK embraces this kind of thing on the grand scale. Me, I've always wanted to wreck it with Wagner from the decks... show him some Golden Frieza n all on the turn tables... UK i got love for how well progressed your music scene is. It tries stuff. I would have heard stuff like this if Brave New Waves was still a thing before the internet on CBC 2

Very well played, bravo to orchestra and DJ, but to me the music just sounds too shallow. The turntables as soloist are an interesting thing, but the composition just doesn't make up to it.

Symphony orchestras around the globe have been loosing audience members, as dedicated fans have been aging and passing away. Younger people have not gravitated to Classical Music, and serious music audiences are dwindling. As a remedy, creative orchestras have been using gimmicks and integrating themselves with pop culture in an effort to keep their musicians in business. If the masses no longer dig what you do, you have to give them what they want if you expect to continue to put food on the table.

Not sure the "soloist" actually works with the orchestra. What's next? A concerto for Harley-Davidson & Orchestra? This is gimmick music that quite frankly doesn't work. Actually, it isn't really a good idea in the first place.

I disagree DJ switch wasnt the best choice for this, there is actually a full turntablist orchestra now and they sound good, DJ switch is battle dj and is quite sloppy at times there are far more musical and well timed Turntablists out there, scratch has its own notation and has over 900 different scratches, you can buy turntables that allow you to change the note of sound you are using so it can have full scale too, the other technique of beat juggling when manipulating two records at the same time uses percussive patterns as its usually done with drum phrases, becoming fully fluid with a full range of skills in the artform can take on average between 6 and 10 years of practice and then after that your still learning, the artform was born in the late 70s and has continued to develop and evolve since and has incorporated pretty much every musical genre going. Most of us will have a decent classical music collection along with muisc from many other genres, vinyl record are a turntablists sound bank and we like to have a full range of instrumental sounds at our disposal

The fact that the D.J. is wearing a T Shirt and not something more formal like the legitimate musicians are wearing, makes a statement about the illegitimacy of his "instrument". What composer Gabriel Prokofiev is trying to do here is to combine modern classical orchestral music with hip hop turntable scratching, in an effort to modernize classical music and usher common pop music fans into the refinement of musical art. Neither attempt works here. The pop culture masses will never understand or appreciate art, because they are the ignorant unwashed masses. Musically speaking, this work lacks any compositional nutrition. It is mostly repeating sound effects which create unsettling and apprehensive mood. Reminiscent of the musical score to The Twilight Zone TV series, only much worse. This attempt is a lame imitation of real modern classical music. But it was well received because Gabriel Prokofiev has his grandfather's brand name, respected as of one of music's most profound and expressive modern musical composers. We can only hope Gabriel will continue to evolve and eventually produce music that truly compliments the genius of his grandfather's magnificent work.

I can't say how disappointed I am with Gabriel Prokofiev's music. It ought ot be so much better. I had such hopes - a compination of 'classical' and club based deejaying couldn't go wrong could it? It's so VAPID (I thought the same about his violin concerto). Not, I think, a chip off the old block.
