Great chart to have captured. I've always thought that 1979 and 1980's number ones were of the highest quality (if you ignore the 80 Xmas chart topper!!!) So much excellent stuff was else where to be found in the Top 40 :-)

Glad you enjoyed it! There's something a bit surreal when the recordings are this clear - hearing this chart from 30+ years ago one day, then listening to Tony live on Radio 2's "Pick of the Pops" the next...

Tony signed off by saying he was next on with Junior Choice. He much later (a couple of decades later) commented that he hated doing Junior Choice.

Only reason why it was Western Europe’s most listened-to show - especially in the days when it was broadcast on both Radios 1 & 2 - is because there were very few alternatives - it was also relayed by BBC local radio stations in those days and Radios 3 & 4 only had classical music or the news - even when it became exclusive to Radio 1 around 1978, it was broadcast on the FM network normally the home of Radio 2 and some local stations broadcast it - Radio 2 had Charlie Chester and 3 & 4 classical music and whatever Radio 4 had - most commercial radio stations had their own version of the chart, compiled by one of the general music magazines - Record Business or Melody Maker or New Musical Express - or a chart for their area!

It would have been nice to hear at least audio snippets of #16 and #12.

Pedantry alert - you're a week off I think. Should be 31st August 1980. www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-chart/19800831/7501/

Hi Retro Split. If you read the text/description that accompanies this upload then you'll see why the video title was changed to September 7th. The "Official Charts" are always a week out with this era as they don't take into account the Tuesday chart publication day, used on TOTP the following Thursday, with the Chart Show transmitted the folowing Sunday. This issue has come up before with my 1970's chart show uploads where my hand-writing of the tranmission dates on my TDK C120 cassette collection doesn't lie! Hope this info helps.
