Jonathan Holloway's dramatisation of 'Arturo Perez' s thriller in which a hidden inscription in a medieval painting of a chess game sets a Spanish picture restorer on the path to solving murders.

A fun idea, but it seems the most hokey parts have been emphasised for this radio adaption. Its re-writing for radio drama must have been a bit hasty. Pity the actors, who do their very best!

This adaptation was rather disappointing. A lot of the literary and artistic allusions which made the book so enjoyable, have been lost. Moreover, I found it confusing. Had I not already read the book, I would have been lost.

Great play, but found the music really intrusive and inappropriate. For me it spoiled the suspense. Probably my fault as have adhd/spectrum dweller.

@@louisbrugnoni1291 It was a bit disappointing to anyone who has ever played at all, even as a child and not a single game seriously. "Tthe knight failed to take the queen when it could do so" - this would NEVER happen in chess. If you can take the queen, you take the queen. No-one would put their queen in jeopardy for that reason. So it's not chess, it's nonsense. A pity, that, as a real chess game (such as is, I think, achieved in "Alice through the looking glass") would have been more fun!

I'm not a chess player at all, but isn't the point that the game mirrors the murders - in the past and the present? It's not meant to be an actual game? Or doesn't that work either?
