The Mezzotint was included in a collection of ghost stories that 12 or 13 year old me purchased at my school book fair. Never bought myself a collection of ghost stories before. And I had never read M.R. James either. The original scared the hell out of me at the time. Forgot about it (how one forgets a baby stealing corpse, I know not) and rediscovered it and James years later. STILL freaking scary. ALL of James' stories are terrifying, but The Mezzotint still stands head and shoulders above.all except, maybe, Casting the Runes. And (much) older me appreciates the creepy humor the author worked into his tale. (The owner of the etching walking it across the hall to be hidden face down in a drawer which he slams shut and--as I recall-- propping a chair against it alwaysxmakes me chuckle). This version hadnt the requisite humor nor the element if revenge as clearly defined, but it certainly brought the chills. Lots of fun on a dark drive home...indeed, the story was longer than mybridecso I had to go around the block a couple of times to finish it all. Hope .Padgett got out of the mountsin!
