I never understood how Britain’s most popular radio station Radio 1 was on crappy medium wave until 1987 when all these local stations and ILR stations have both Medium Wave and VHF stations from launch

Bizarre start to BBC Radio Solway - sounding like you’re listening to a telephone - then announcing itself as BBC Radio Tweed, before hastily correcting himself!

Sorry for the delayed reply: I have been travelling and only returned to the UK today. Re your comment: apparently, the BBC DG was standing in the next room when it happened (and believe it or not this is the best quality recording the BBC seems to have!)!

BBC Wiltshire Sound had a tricky competitor that was commercial Wiltshire Radio - soon merged with Radio West to form GWR. Now Heart. BBC Radio Wiltshire continues to thrive.

The fabulous Lincolnshire song! Stations don’t have that eccentric individuality these days. Even all BBC local stations have exactly the same station idents

Yes - very sad! But I guess, when the BBC's finances are being constantly restricted, individuality and especially jingles etc, would be an obvious cost saving.

Great video. One note BBC Radio Devon (my local) back in 1983 started broadcasting from Exeter not Plymouth as stated. There were portacabins as the main studios were not quite built

Same three times in this jingle at this minute 3:50 to #BBCRadioCarlisle, the major name change of the 80's at #BBCRadioCumbria. Sorry to say this but i'm starting to obsess, over this jingle it's still great. ❤️🤗😘
