Thanks for the memories. Donald Crowhurst, Robin Knox-Johnson, Miles Smeeton among others, grabbed all the limelight but we, more amateur and humble sailors had just as much fun. In my case I had, in the 70's a Laser designed and made by Bruce Kirby not 40 miles from where I lived then. Spectacularly easy to sail, it crowded on lots of canvas (Dacron) and was fast with one person and fun with 2. It went on to be a world class name. I sold it to a family member a few years ago and it's stioll going strong so cheers from Canada North fellow sailors. All great memories.

Wonderful documentary. We're pretty checked out RKJ and the Crowhurst stories now, but maybe it was less commonly known when this came out. Very interesting about the advent of plywood, the improvement in adhesive technology and basically how WW2 can be thanked for all of it. It's funny how home-made and low budget that first Golden Globe race seems now compared to the ludicrous expense lavished on sailing today.

Thank you for the wonderful memories. Sailing experienced a wonderful boom. The results included the establishment of much of the infrastructure we enjoy today. Sadly, we have failed to sustain the momentum and have the problems of aging membership and infrastructure. As a sport, the leadership of our associations are elected from the elite clubs and the high profile aspects of the sport. At the moment it is the grassroots clubs that are most vulnerable, but the problems are coming fast. The economic crises of 2008/10 and 2019/21 and resulting insecurity of employment must curtail discretionary expenditures for many. Boats are a commitment to ongoing expenditure and many will wisely curtail such outlays. Our sport needs to develop new and compelling offerings for these changed times.

This was a strange documentary. It started ok then wandered off into the sing-handed events of the sixties and mixed shots of the 70's top.. while I enjoy that stuff, I was an avid follower at the time but it was way less about sailing of normal people in the 60's . Thant for posting and for the BBC to leave it here. Cheers Warren .

That was exactly my thinking. Chichester, Knox-Johnston and Crowhurst have been done to death and weren't typical of sailing in the 60s. The bit about Mirrors, Enterprises and Centaurs (pictured, but a boat of the 70s iirc) with the increased pressure on moorings was more interesting.

Much of the footage is the 70s with a Westerly longbow in shot which was an early 70s yacht.

And How BBC not to mention any words about Moitessier, who in fact won and refused to get the prize, sailing south back to Tahiti. But he didn't win. He could have done, but he chose to go around the world again which to him meant more than winning. But the way you write it is quite misleading, like he crossed the finish line but left refusing to take the prize, which he didn't. And its a documentary about British sailing in the sixties, so obviously it will focus more on that then French Sailors, I'm sure France has its own documentaries that focuses on French sailing. If you want to see a good documentary on this specific race then search for 'Deep Water', its free on youtube.

@@MrGino714 Sailing in the sixties, but I think it was a type of documentary by the BBC that focused on various aspects of British life in the sixties. They probably should have mentioned Bernard though, who was as you say a true gentleman, that said Knox Johnston donated his winnings to Crowhursts widow & has done a huge amount for Charity with his position, so I would say he is also a true gentleman.

How do they tell the story of the Golden Globe and barely mention Moitessier? Read his book The Long Way if you want his account or A Voyage For Madmen by Peter Nichols for a much more comprehensive telling of the tale.

Was that a challenge at the end, : one man has sailed around the world three times non stop: the next frame was a mirror dingy, without watching again, with a spinnaker. Has this been done yet, is it possible? Who's up for it?

An Australian has sailed and rowed a Mirror dinghy from Shrewsbury to the Black Sea via assorted canals and rivers with the Thames Estuary to the British Channel perhaps being the most epic part. Another Australian (Ben Carlin) drove a Ford amphibious jeep from Halifax, Canada, to the UK via Spanish Morocco, Gibraltar and Europe and after a lengthy overhaul from the UK to India, across Burma to Thailand and Malaya and then Japan and the northern Pacific back to where he had bought the jeep in the USA. The jeep is at his old school in Western Australia, Guildford High School and his story of the full circumnavigation , "The other Half of Half Safe" is in print, from Guildford High School. If Alain Bombard could sail a rubber raft from Europe to the Caribbean drinking nothing but fish-juice, sea-water and rain, and if one could avoid pirates and bureaucrats, one probably could sail a Mirror dinghy round the world as long as one chose one's route and timing carefuly. An 11 foot aluminium yacht now in Brisbane's Museum certainly had certainly done some serious deep-water sailing.
