I remember the '83 & 84 Wimbledons when John McEnroe won and '82 when he lost to Jimmy Connors in an epic 5 set final when I was 12. 1983 & 84 were great summers with plenty of hot weather but summers in the 80's were generally crap with a lot of rain and cool temperatures dominated. After '84, I don't think we had another hot summer until 1989 not long after I started my first job.

The cricket in 1983 was broadcast in India. With two B.B.C. Cameras but not here. In 1985. The Rugby Union match between Scotland and The All Blacks was striked out in the U.K. but transmitted LIVE on T.V.N.Z. by three T.V.N.Z. cameras at Murryfeid. Scotland won. A match never shown in the U.K. Thanks for this video.

Both events were actually in 1983 and the Scotland v NZ Rugby Union test was actually drawn but was shown on Rugby Special with a off tube commentary by Nigel Starmer Smith

It started off as 7 individual uploads. By the time I cut out any incidental tennis I glued it as 1 item :)

In 1985. The B.B.C. replaced the strike with day two of The Ryder Cup from A.B.C. in Amercia. Not avalibale in Amercia. Jack Whitiker had to say sorry for viewers in Amercia that we could see.

Major kudos to those BBC cameramen working up in the gods through very stormy conditions. They want paying danger money!

Great video. The unions did not pull the plug in 1983. The B.B.C. would have switched to the N.B.C. Breakfast at Wimbledon coverage. In 1985 the same dispute. B.B.C. Mamagement covered the strike [But it did lead to Grandstand being off the air for a month. In 1989. The last of these disputes happened but only efected the third day of Royal Ascot and the W.T.A. Eastbourne event final and the first few months of Eurosport. As Des Lynam said at the time. Industral inaction more like! Happy Days! But not because of the telly. Just because my family were all alive then. Barbra Slater I think now 15 years head of B.B.C Sport.

I do remember Royal Ascot. At exactly 3pm I thought maybe no strike… then all of a sudden the camera slowly panned to the right and downwards. The cameraman must have just walked away with it still transmitting.

@@bdavebaldwin In 1983. Spot on. In 1985. As the horses were going in to the stalls for the 1985 King George and Queen Elizabeth Cup. Replaced by 100 Greatest sporting moments. Again in 1989 When the feed just went to fuzz.

Amazing that Navratilova won Wimbledon from 82 to 87, 6 in a row.

Borg won 1976 to 1980 and the men's game was much more competitive than the ladies back then.

@@xav9258 Borg's 5 in a row was amazing too. Martina's 6 in a row and 9 in total have not been surpassed since in the women’s game.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6Glh2ePm86emrc. I didn’t really have chance to record a lot in 1980 but these clips and the Christmas recordings are about all I’ve got. It’s hopeless trying to put Wimbledon on - one tennis ball and the whole recording get’s blocked
