I've probably seen every western movie ever made (80 yo in 3 weeks), and I rank this in the Top 10 (also 1883). Everything about it gets a 10 from me. The chemistry between Emily and Chaske was palpable; both did a fantastic job. But every aspect of this movie is a 10. Emily Blunt is one of the most versitle actresses ever. No challenge is too great for her. She deserves an Emmy and Golden Globe for this performance. As is the case with almost all of the movies/series that I love, I will wait about 6 months and watch it again. Everyone needs to see this Masterpiece!

Chaske was stoic though strong and in control of his emotions at the same time. His deep masculine voice, his demeanor, and facial expressions just say everything without words. Only THE BEST actors can do this. That, combined with amazing Emily Blunt and her perfection in acting and you have a gut wrenching, edge of your seat, cheering for the 2 of them, wishing. Hoping. Pleading for their love to be known and shown to the world 😢 and THEN.....we found out why she couldn't give herself to him. God! Those 2 people SHOULD have been together forever. Their love came directly thru the screen and into my heart. That really hurt! That's how GOOD AND AMAZING these 2 actors really are! And all the supporting cast was SO GOOD and believable too! Some you love. Some you hate. But ALL GOOD. I just wish they had a happy ending.... I binged watched the WHOLE thing in 2 days😂🎉😂🎉

In short this show is absolutely BRILLIANT. One of the best shows I've seen...ever. Definitely one of the most beautifully shot. Seriously, it's absolutely gorgeous. The story is well written with everything coming together at the perfect time without loose ends. The show doesn't hold your hand or explain every last detail of what's happening, but all the questions are answered if you simply take the time to watch and think. In the end, you will understand everything. I almost never watch something I've seen twice, but I'll be watching this series again and probably again.

It's interesting how they introduce the show and description they gave was that it was the "Englishwomens revenge" story. It really stuck out to me. I felt both their stories were so strong, Eli's I would say was even "bigger" that to me they are both lead characters in the story and not just Eli helping her get revenge. The story is so huge and really what I took away from it was not their love story and revenge it was the whole scale of what was happening at the time but just showing us through 2 characters and their particular points of views.

@Michaela Wehr I don’t know about off screen: I don’t really watch BTS that much. But on screen their chemistry is great. Bit of action, drama & romance in it. Something for everyone. I can’t stand pure romance stuff but that’s not the biggest factor at play in it which is why I think I liked it. Again Chaske is probably the whole reason I watched this: never seen or heard of him before but he was the glue that held it together for me. But I’ve always had a fondness for Native Americans so maybe I just like seeing Native American representation 🤷♂️

'The English' hits deep in the same way seeing Dances with Wolves did in the theater for the first time. I remember how a 3hr movie was so rare the talk of it was how it would be too long for people. But this was proven to not be true at all when a tale is so poignant and meaningful that it can literally make time stand still. And that was true of 'The English' too. I was so pulled in I absorbed the full series of 6 episodes in one day. It hit so deep in my soul I felt gut punched at times and mournful at other times and completely always invested in the journey of the two main character souls that were clearly brought together by destiny. Particularly moving is the tale behind Chaske Spencer character as the Native American Soldier Scout Guide. His is a story that needed to be told in all its' painful layering depths without polishing over or Hollywood glorifying that role in anyway. As was the ugly fact that the US had psychotic soldiers doing what we'd call today horrific 'war crimes'. All in the name of their military that was already often cold-hearted and unconcerned with the indigenous people as a whole. A truth we should never forget as there were too many different dishonorable situations within: the "clearing" of the land, the Native American children "schools" and the Native Americans that served the US military. And through all of this heavy layering content, a clear love story builds in the most beautiful way between Chaske Spencer and Emily Blunts lead characters. The two of them alone carry you through with love in your own heart for them and the deep connection they discover in the power of being united through this journey.

By episodes four and five I wanted more scenes with this fantastic pair, but the screenwriters filled many scenes with some supporting characters in a kind of Coen Bros. grotesquerie style that felt far away from the powerful humanity of these two. I also wanted more and more Eli backstory. The final episode was so powerful, so moving. The last scene years later--no spoilers from me--also deeply moving and striving to show some respect for first nations and the mottled, tragic pageant of the history of the American West.

Loved the series. Absolutely both heartbreaking and radiant. However, I have to say in these series of interviews with Blunt and Spencer, Blunt talks way too much, even when Spencer is answering a question directed to him. She seems anxious, uncomfortable in all of these interviews, and then gives off the impression that she has to rescue the interview and Spencer for the sake of the series. (I have seen several interviews of these two, different outlets. She's wearing the same shirt, so they must have done several of these in one day.)

Probably her behaviour. Pulling away from him when they were getting intimate, her not wanting to take her gloves off, her saying she was "already dead", and her just generally being ill with fever in episode 5. He probably guessed that she was sick in some way but wasn't 100% sure what the deal was. She simply confirmed what it was in episode 6.
