It was a clever episode. It's kinda funny how The Doctor almost killed himself if there was nothing indeed back there, and potentially psychologically scarred little Rupert. Indeed I was blown away when I realized that the little child was the Doctor.

One of the best episodes of new who. Reminds me of silence in the library or midnight. The creepy unceen enemy of midnight and the emotional impact and spooky atmosphere of silence in the library. It’s also pretty funny as well somehow and very personal to the doctor.

Her "Moffat Loop" is properly known as an Ontological Paradox. (And yes, AWESOME episode!)
@anonymes288410 жыл бұрын
Although you could argue that Moffat tackles it slightly differently to most other writers so it may warrant the name they give it. Whereas others treat it as some massive issue to be resolved (i.e. a genuine paradox) to him it's just a perfectly normal aspect of time-travel. In fact for me it's the totally blasé way he drops closed timelike curves into his scripts that makes them so entertaining.
@shanedk10 жыл бұрын
Anon Ymes I like how naturally he makes it happen, too. And it does result in a stable closed time loop, so there's really nothing to resolve.

Maybe I'm just weird like that, but I found this episode really heart warming. The Doctor, although being very dark later on in the series, steps in (eventually) to comfort a scared child. Overall, it gives a good message to all viewers that it's okay to be scared.

Omg people. It doesn't matter what was under the blanker or outside the ship because the whole point of the episode is that the existence of the monster is irrelevant. What the episode is interested in is how people deal with fears, especially the ones that are irrational. It's a mediation on how fear affects us and makes us see patterns that aren't really there. Loved this episode.

Definitely the best episode by far (Into the Dalek being second) and I'd even go as far to say that this episode was better than the entire last season (minus the 50th anniversary ofc). This episode had me glued to the screen and I just kept wanting more. This episode kind of reminded me of "Midnight" (one of my favourite episodes) - it was dark, chilling and different from your usual Doctor Who episode. I hope to see more episodes like this in the future.

Here's some of my thoughts on the questions people have; What was under Rupert's blanket? I think that it could just have been a child, yes. Rupert's might have had a reputation for being scared at night, so the other children found weakness and made fun of it. Or, it was a set-up for something in the future, like in the god complex. The Doctor saw something that linked to the plot but it was never really picked up on til the end. To me, it looked like a Silent. They didn't see it as it was under a sheet, so they didn't forget it. That's why a point was made of not looking at the actual thing. I think that the Doctor and Danny are going to be seriously linked, and that thing in the bed sheets will have something to do with it. What was happening in the base towards the end? As we discovered there was no official monster, and just the Doctors fear of the dark, I think that it was just to do with the ship powering down. It's like when we are scared at night, we tend to over exaggerate everything in our minds, and that's what the Doctor was doing out loud. As for Orson being scared, I think after six months alone there, he had developed a paranoia about it. Everything that could have been a monster, had an on screen explanation. How did they land on Gallifrey? I think that Gallifrey may be able to access pre-Timewar, now that it has been saved. In 'The Doctors Wife', she told the Doctor she took him wherever he needed to go, and Clara was needed there, so that the Doctor fully became the Doctor. If Clara hadn't told him to use fear as a power, he would never have gone to the time lord academy. He would never have became a grand Father, he would never have stole a TARDIS, he would never have found in the time war, the time war may not have happened, he would never have come across Clara, and Clara would never have entered his time stream and saved him, leading him to where he is now, she would never have stopped him saving Gallifrey, and so on. Clara needed to be there, that needed to happen, so the TARDIS made sure of it. As for the family air loom, I think that the Doctor and Danny are going to have a serious connection, and we are heading towards a massive twist...
@simonjones239510 жыл бұрын
I think the reason Clara got to Gallifrey is due to the Doctor shutting down the TARDIS' safeguards so she could cross her time stream, as stated in the start of the episode. It was also the reason they could reach the end of the universe. Personally, I think the story isn't really about the monster, and is more about the idea that the monster was there (like the Doctor) and Clara and Danny/Ruperts relationship. That was the main focus of the episode, in my eyes. One question I do have that my dad pointed out, if Clara gave young Doctor the soldier figure, then how did Danny and Orson get it? I guess it could have been in the far future, but I'm still not sure. I guess it'll be explained or I'm just being stupid.
@anonymes288410 жыл бұрын
Simon Jones Not stupid I don't think, it could end up being significant (as Rupert/Danny says, it belongs to the children's home, not him specifically so it could've come from anywhere - including an ancient time-traveller dropping it off to close a loop in spacetime). But it's also entirely possible that Clara gives it to the Doctor after Danny and Orson are finished with it. In other words, look at it from the toy's timeline itself and it's quite linear and straightforward - Danny carries it with him for his entire life, it's passed down to Orson who carries it on his mission who gives it to Clara who gives it to the Doctor. Incidentally, might just be a little in joke but Orson means "bear" and Rupert, at least to generations of British kids, is also a bear. Could be nothing but between that and the number of times they're mentioning his surname, Pink, I wonder if his name is significant ?
@simonjones239510 жыл бұрын
I completely forgot about that "belongs to the home" line. Your theory does make some sense and hopefully will be brought up in later episodes. Being a Brit myself, I kept thinking of Rupert the bear, as it's really the only reference point I have. His name probably will be significant, due to the amount of times it's been mentioned, how different people say they like it etc. I find it interesting that Moffat brought up the point of Danny changing his first name, could be important for later episodes. Only time will tell.
@kopitarrules10 жыл бұрын
Simon Jones Rupert says the toys belonged to the orphanage, so it could very well be as simple as that the toy was one that belonged to the orphanage. He carried it and passed down through the generations until Orson gave it to Clara who gave it to the Doctor (when he was young).
@dnimara10 жыл бұрын

There may be an interesting, complicated reason (and I almost hope there is) but it could also just be that the BBC has a limited budget, even for a flagship show like "Doctor Who", and so re-used props it already had.

So what about that broken toy soldier? Is it just with The Doctor? Why didn't he keep something like that, or wonder where it had come from? Did he hand it down to some human thousands of years later? Does it just disappear? Was it really necessary for Clara to give him that? Also, I truly hope there was some kind of monster and it will come up later... Anyone remember the episode with the hotel with a room holding in it your greatest fear? Another one with an ambiguous ending... I wonder if there's some kind of connection. I've always wanted to know what really was inside that room...

The doctors greatest fear in the God Complex was revealed to be the crack in time and space in time of the doctor. Remember it's the 11th doctors greatest fear. No all the doctors so peter capaldis greatest fear was different. I think if you imagine there was NO monster it makes the episode immensely better. There was no monster. The monster it's self was fear. The monster was a manifestation of the Doctors fear. Listen is an extremely clever episode and should be a testament that Doctor who doesn't need a monster or big villain to be great. Listen is a classic and is in my top 10 episodes ever.
@stratifyed10 жыл бұрын
Right on. Thanks, mate Listen was brilliant. And in four episodes, Capaldi has managed to make himself my favorite Doctor yet (havent watched Classic Who though). This is the Doctor I've been waiting for. Tennant and Smith were great, but 11 was a little to flamboyant too often, and I was craving a change. Step in the right direction for me because then, with a darker Doctor like 12, episodes like Listen can truly shine
@JoshNpublicgplus10 жыл бұрын
Right, forgot about the crack... I'm still not sure about why they had to have Clara give the toy to him though... And I wouldn't be too certain about there being no monster. It's entirely possible that there was a different monster that will come into play again later in the series...
@stratifyed10 жыл бұрын
That's what I'm thinking (about the monster). I don't think that creature is a mere episode crutch. As for the toy, I think it might come into play towards the end of the series, but of course, we have to wait

Why did the Doctor as a child have dark hair when William Hartnell was blonde?
@kopitarrules10 жыл бұрын
True but by the time we caught up with the Doctor in an Unearthly Child, he was already silver, so he could easily have started out as a dark haired boy. Option 2 (and my personal favourite) It wasn't the Doctor in that barn, but another dark haired young boy who recently had a traumatic experience from looking into the unbound schism and was trying to deal with the fact that he kept hearing drums......
@hugocl_10 жыл бұрын
kopitarrules But, the fact that this video states that "and we even get a special glimps into the DOCTOR's childhood" and when clara refers to him going back to the barn (as we know, the war doctor did), put that theory down, so I don't think that the master is that child.

The Hiugou Oh for sure, that is definitely what we are meant to think but remember rule #2. The Moffat lies. Lol Also remember the Doctor is the only Time Lord Clara actually knows, and since she recognized the barn as being the one the War Doctor took the moment to, it would be natural for her to assume it was the Doctor. I actually felt insulted after watching this episode. So all along there was no monster and it was just people dreaming after all? What a terrible ending! If it was just a kid under the sheets after all, which it seems to have been, then why would you want to re-watch this episode, because it's not scary the second time round (like Hide, because we find out it was a love story).
@anonymes288410 жыл бұрын
This might end up being quite a big arc episode which could be one reason to re-watch (why would so many people share the Doctor's exact "dream" ? Is the family heirloom significant ? What's actually going on with Pink ? and so on. All these might be complete non-questions but also may not be - plenty of people thought the lack of jacket in series 5 was a simple production error and look how that turned out). Another is that it's quite timey-wimey and so may reveal more on repeat viewings or with knowledge of future episodes - Clara basically creates the Doctor for instance (giving him the strength to face his fears, giving him a warrior without a gun as a totem etc.) which you could see as another saving of his life [as the Doctor] by the Impossible Girl.

it's almost like there can be more depth to an episode than "spooky monster"

The episode never said the creatures didn't exist. It just explained what frightened the Doctor and what made him go poking around to find the creatures. If they didn't exist, what was under the sheet? Was it a kid playing a prank, or a creature? The fact it was left ambiguous probably makes it _more_ creepy.

why are these Doctor Who Extras called "Series 1"?
@NoName146210 жыл бұрын
Because it's the first season of "Doctor Who Extra", just like Doctor Who Confidential had "seasons" or "series" back in the day. We'll have more of these after this season of Doctor Who.

This episode sucked. The plot was so unfocused.

agreed, not only could they not pick a plot and stick with it. (each of which could have made good stand alone episodes) im REALLY getting sick of clara's stupid personal like that no one probably cares about getting in the way of the actual friggin show. also is it me, or has capaldi's doctor STILL not found a fucking characterization? hes had a different personality every episode so far and its getting annoying. its bad writing... the dalek episode he was angry, brooding and practical (the personality that i like and hope they stick with), robin hood episode he was trying to be too silly and it just didnt work, and now this one where he was just paranoid about nothing for no reason.

I just don't understand you, guys, and I think I never will. For me, the episode was perfect, but if you think you can make it better, go ahead! Cheers.

The Hiugou They hate watch and nothing the show does will make them happy. Even if an episode is as well received by critics and fans as Listen was they will still hate it because it's Moffat. It's the old if you sit up they will complain and if you sit down they will complain. Nothing will change their mind because they've already decided to hate it, so it isn't worth debating with them.

man this episode was by far the worst episode in the entirety of DW since the 2005 restart... i could go on with reasons but i dont have an hour to write an essay on fuckin youtube. the only good episode of the season so far was the first one and it was REALLY good, the dalek episode was shit (and the daleks showing up so soon into capaldi's run? eww...) and the robin hood one was almost passable only saved by the banter and jokes between the doctor and robin.

Not as good as the last episode. Very boring plot and no rewatchebility. I prefer rewatchebility.

What would the doctor do if he met a hitchhiker who asks for a lift to Galifrey?

I'm sorry you feel that way. I thought it was a very good, intimate episode that explores fear without resorting to big explosions and an obvious "monster-of-the-week." I'm likely to watch it again. Keep in mind that Doctor Who is very eclectic, and appeals to a wide audience. One person's "boring plot" is another person's excitement.
