So great to hear Jonathan mention mix tapes & their importance! Last year I started communicating with a man who lives a state away, & we would chat on the phone about once week. I'm not much for a lot of phone time, but I stuck with it because he was the one calling and I thought maybe I should just give it a go. He wasn't much of a conversationalist & I was always encouraging him to tell me about his work to make him comfortable, but after awhile it started to be like pulling teeth despite his constant pursuit. So I thought I'd curate some cd's to open up the conversation, to see if we actually had anything in common and to learn more about him other than his work at the Mill... Mind you this guy may have been working at a steel mill, but it was by choice because he was fascinated with it, wanted to learn it & had gone to art school in the late 80s. I spent two days curating a few cds of different genres. One was stuff I figured he's probably find familiar from childhood radio with some funny stuff like Bobby Goldsboro, Chevy Van etc... One with slower, beautiful, somber stuff like; Sparklehorse, Mercury Rev, Robin Trower, Iron & Wine, Jeff Buckley etc... One with harder stuff like QOTSA, The Damned, Sabbath, Alice In Chains, The Cramps etc... Another one with sexy, atmospheric stuff like Eno, Air, blah blah blah & onward. So I pack them in a 1970s lunchbox & send it off... I get a text a few days later; "Thank you for the box you sent." Hmm... okay, I'm sure the next time we talk on the phone he's going to say something like "Oh wow, I haven't heard that song in years!" or "I hate that band" Frankly I would've been happy even to hear what he DIDN'T like! But zilch. The next time we spoke no mention of any of the music at all. That told me everything I needed to know.

Cassette a perversion.......choked on my tea. Post Covid, when you’re next in Bristol, we are coming to listen. I cant believe I have only listened to Holes, so much music though. Looking back at songs now, remembering how the teen version heard, and now how the 58 year old hears, boy yes. Pink Floyd DSOTM is particularly pertinent speaking personally.....58 and in therapy. I see an hour long interview with Jonathan Donahue on my feed. That’s my next hour accounted for. I threw out most of my tapes....whoops.
