As drummer for the Foo Fighters for over 20 years, Taylor Hawkins has drummed his way through everything from Reading & Leeds Festival, to Radio 1 Live Lounges to sell out stadium shows.
But what does it take to become a drummer? What inspires someone to pick up a pair of drumsticks in the first place? And just how important is the drummer to a band?
In this programme, Taylor gives us a guided tour of his drum kit, talking to Radio 6 Music's Steve Lamacq about his childhood, his influences, his favourite drum loops, and what it’s like drumming with both Alanis Morissette & Dave Grohl.

look man, I'm putting this everywhere because I need you to know the truth!!!! I live near their hotel, and some drug dealer here is getting famous because he sell some basuca/basuco (drug of the homeless here, it is brick powder with cigarette ashes and coca paste (the coca paste is the cocaine before you can sniff it, pure coca paste) and some tobacco or weed) and that gives you a 5 minute trip that you don't wanna forget and he overdosed feeling tht trip. The drug dealer is getting famous because he sell it for like a thousand to Taylor, and the real price is less than a dolar for a single dose. It's believed that the dealer selled him 10 doses of that, and that's too strong so he overdosed, BUT THE MEDIA IS GOING TO LIE AND SAY THAT WAS HEROIN OR SOMETHING TO NOT SAY HE WAS HITTING COLOMBIAN HOMELESS DRUGS. THESE PEOPLE IS GOING TO LIE TO YOU ABOUT HIS DEATH

Yeah I'll be honest I had little awareness of the guy or his technical talents before this, but this approach to his conversation style and his obvious skill here when I saw this a year ago instantly converted me into a fan, and made me like Fooeys on a deeper level. Started really going back and listening to their songs with a bigger appreciation. Before that as mentioned I didn't even know who their drummer (Tay) was. Just knew their songs and Dave.

Great interview, great stories, sad for him to leave so soon. He was our neighbor when my son Ian Harrower was in grade school. We lived on Mountain View Drive in Laguna Beach. Every day after school, my son would walk home, and Taylor would be in his garage playing drums (circa 1985-86), and he would stop and listen for awhile. Ian also went on to become quite a drummer as well. Music is the best way to express yourself and connect.

Loved every minute of this! As a 10 year old girl in 1957 who wanted to play drums, I was told no, you can have a piano. So I studied piano for years. But all I ever heard in songs and in concerts was the drums. In 2014, after finishing radiation treatment for breast cancer, I decided if not now, when. As luck would have it, a School of Rock was opening in my neighborhood and was taking adult students. In a week, I bought a DDrum kit for $400 and had lessons lined up. I found out that I was naturally in the pocket. Within months, I was in the adult performance group and in the following 4+ years played at venues around the city. It took me 57 years to do this. It is never too late. I will not be what I could have been had I started earlier, but it is still a hell of a lot of fun. I am now 72 and still playing as much as I can, even though I am no longer in a band. (Fell last year, broke my hand, took a long time to heal, played with one hand for awhile, got replaced, blah blah blah.) Thank you for this great interview, masterclass, whatever you call it! It has energized me! Play as much as you can, play songs, rock on!

When I first started learning how to play the drums my teacher told me the drums are one of the easiest instruments to pick up but one of the hardest to master and that's just playing on your own. If you are playing in a band it becomes far more difficult. Unless people play instruments themselves most people overlook the drummer because they are often overlooked by the guitarists or whatever.

so pumped to hear of so many starting at age 50 - before / after .. I started playing at age 3, played in a few bands in my teens and 20s and then “life” took over .. kids are all grown up; and I too am playing again and loving it (later in life), jamming with mates half my age - definitely the Charlie Watts of the crew 🥁 having a ball 🇦🇺 well done Ellen 🤙🏽

I haven't felt this way for a musician since Freddie Mercury passed away. Lost and heavy hearted. I started to listen to them only last year, in the second half of March during a hard time for my family, Walk was always in my ears... "Learning to walk again, I believe I've waited long enough"... I truly had some relief watching their videos and even had fun given the circumstances. I also tried to play drums, totally spellbound by Taylor's drumming style but had to quit. Watching his smile now hurts... Thank you Taylor for healing my soul with the power of your drumming. I feel lost like many others today, i guess we'll find a way to walk again.

I started taking drum lessons last year at 43 years old, and fell in love with drumming straight away. Because I tend to live under a rock, on top of how I was never really into the Foo Fighters, I only just learned about Taylor a couple of months ago. (I came across the video of his son, Shane on the drums playing "My Hero" at his dad's tribute concert. Let me just say - if you haven't seen it yet - I highly recommend looking it up, it was a heart wrenching performance as Shane just drummed his heart out paying homage to his father.) Wanting to know more about who this kids father was, I went down a Taylor Hawkins rabbit hole and have still yet to come out. Taylor has quickly become one of my all-time favorite drummers, and I just can't seem to learn enough about him, his drumming techniques, and the extraordinary things he did with his life. I just want to say how much my heart goes out to all those who knew and loved him as well as to his countless fans from all over the globe. Talk about a phenomenal drummer and just an exemplary person. He left a legendary legacy that will be treasured indefinitely.

I like how literally since the beginning of being in Foo Fighters, Taylor has always rolled his eyes when Dave says things like "you couldn't find a better drummer". Without fail lmao

such a great interview of a legend. Taylor had such incredibly hard shoes to fill but did such an amazing job. he recorded so many killer tracks and left a legacy of beats and energy that people will imitate for generations.
