The Roman Glass Bracelet is the one thing on Roadshow that I yearn to see in person.

Aye, absolutely astonishing survivals over two thousand years!
@pageup2139 ай бұрын
One of the truly greatest aspects of this show, is when those without massive means find they have something of amazing value (it truly changes their lives). I can remember watching the USA version and there was this one particular woman, who clearly came from vast wealth - her time on that segment was like her speaking to appraiser in a "hurry up and tell me if this is worth anything" kind of way, only to then be like "oh, only that much" and then proceed to act like she was happy and wouldn't sell anything, when it was clearly written all over her face how she truly felt. Fast forward to another segment where a woman found out she had an important art piece and broke down crying, knowing that it's sale is going to change her and her families lives forever. Truly appreciative of the fact that an ancestor lived an amazing life, was gifted that painting - they could sell up to a museum that would take care of the painting, allow them to see it and relay the story for generations to come while having benefited financially in a positive way (not someone already rich 20 times over that is ungrateful and would only on sell to the highest bidder on the private market).

Back home I spent at least a couple of hours, using an old toothbrush and toothpaste to clean the grease away from the yellow frame. To discover it's 18 carat gold ! The pietra dura has a flower bouquet motive. In red, green and caramel colours of carnelian, agathe, and chrysophrase. Missing only a couple of black grains, as it is set in a black paste, rather than onyx. I guess a previous owner thought it was just rubbish... Love from Norway 🇧🇻

@jennyrussellobrien1582 - I went online and did a very quick inflation calculation and then converted that to USD and it works out to approximately 2.5 - sorry, forgot the value they put on that stunning brooch, but for today's USD value just multiply by 2.5.
@RMBlake0075 ай бұрын
@@lapsedluddite3381 That's fine work. However, when it comes to items of gold & other valuable metals, there is more than the cost of inflation to consider. For example, Silver was worth an avg $5 per ounce in 1994. In 2024 it is an avg of $27 per oz. Gold in 1994 was avg $389 per oz. In 2024 so far, the avg price is $2,400. per oz. The gold posy holders have the added value of age & crafts manship, but also a scrap value alone worth 2 thousand USD per ounce more than what it was when the items were priced in the mid 90's. In my humble opinion, they would be worth more than just the 2.5 inflation consideration....the scrap values alone would price them much higher??

Diamonds: I wanted to add a 3/4 carat diamond to my wife’s dinner ring. I went to my local jeweler and described what I thought I wanted. He described how it could be done and told me it would be $8,000.00. So we have probably invested in our last jewelry. The kids should be happy though. When we were first married, long ago, our jeweler friend made lots of things for me to give to Carol. All the diamonds were flawless and all the gold was 18 carat. I probably spent less than a thousand dollars on each item, average. There are probably 100 items. And she wears them. But now we are old and time marches on. I don’t think that a thirty-ish lady today goes anywhere where amazing jewelry is worn. And that is really a shame.

As a jeweler, so many believe diamonds are what hold value, when in reality, it's the colored gems, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, etc. Unless a diamond is truly remarkable, it won't hold much value on the secondary market, where as a nice quality ruby or a sapphire will increase in value over time.

As a gemstone collector, I treasure gems for being rare. Over the years, visiting local stone and mineral fairs, vendors always ask what I'm in the market for. My answer is "Something so rare it barely exists"... I once chose a Norwegian Emerald over a Colombian one. And a cherry red flawless heart shape cut fire opal over a harlequin Australian black opal. Recently had it appraised. $2,500. I'm glad he's not here to have heard that news. The only reason they would sell for more is because of inflation. If they sold for "PENNIES" when they were appraised the money probably had an equivalent buying power then as it would have today in inflated money.

Inflation isn’t the ‘only reason’ that antiques go up in value.
