The inline dual motor configuration of Zip Line Aircraft is not the most efficient, or quiet. A better system would be a twin tractor with wing mount configuration, but the dual inline does have some other advantages. The reason they say it's quieter is that they used to mount the motors in the worst place possible, on the back of the wings in a pusher configuration. that means that the air with pressure differential is going right into the prop arc, and there are going to be some harmonics. it will change depending on the exact differential in pressure. The motors also have to be out of the way of the arrestor line, so it's a good compromise for them, considering the circumstances. Zip Line engineers, if you're listening: What kind of batteries are you using? I've been building Li-ion batteries with great success and 4 hr+ endurance for some similar sized fixed wing aircraft, and they work much better than lipos. would be happy to share anything I've learned to help.

I wonder if you are pretending to be ignorant on purpose. The size of a drone is not a concern. The people who controls it does. We know atleast official organization and business will not misuse drones. If we do not regulate drone use for the general public, someone/anyone could put an explosive on the drone and fly it into something, a nuclear reactor for instance. We already have cases where activists fly drones into government buildings. If you have a bone to pick, take it up with those activists.

Ok drone deliveries, what about small air craft issues like paragliders and paramotors, it's all very well the drones being able to avoid each other but will they be able to avoid paragliders and motors and their chutes. Drone deliveries are a good idea so long as they get these things right. As for patrolling the beaches and sea, they could use paramotors in combination with the drones that way they have more tools available to them. Also being able to see the crocs in the water could be done by using thermal imaging. Just one thing regarding the drone deliveries what happens when one of these drones falls out the sky and hits someone on the head, or causes damage who will pay and how much.

Many concerns/issues. One is pirates. Anyone with a pellet gun can shoot these down. The package delivery via parachute would have to fly so low to be accurate in a populated area that everything from telephone wires to trees and buildings would cause a problem. And how do you deliver a package to the 12th floor of a high rise? Then there's air traffic. Birds, kites, OTHER recreational and commercial drones, heck even a loose helium balloon. Then weather, they would be grounded during high winds, rain, snow, ect. In some parts of the country that's 75% of the time. Next is range. A drone isn't delivering a 10lb package 50 miles away. There would have to be a HUGE increase in distribution/warehouse locations to cover the map. The concept of remote rescue is cool, as well as remote drops of medicine/blood in times of need. For commercial use right now though, the cost of recharging the batteries after each delivery and the cost of the drones themselves and the people piloting them would funnel down to the consumer, increasing the cost of his goods. We're not there yet.

There be a more simple way to stop sharks attacking swimmers off a beach, build a floating shark fence which has many folding weighted segments hanging down to the bottom of the sea floor, this fence surrounds the full swimming and surfing area of the beach. and as the tide rises and lowers through the day and night the floating top fence moves up or down with it, with the segments either un-folding from the base or folding as there be strong poles holding the main parts in place? the grid like fence could be made of either marine grade stainless steel or some type of carbon fibre and aluminium? the tops of the poles could have bright colours with warning lights for boats. if you fence the area's off both the humans and sharks can do what they wish without hurting or killing each other?

Shark fences are already in use and have been for some time kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6eqqZSrhbB8jtk however they are very expensive compared to drones and just not practical for large areas. As mentioned in the video currently full sized manned helicopters are flown over popular beaches looking for sharks which is way more expensive and much less effective than these drones. Sophistication of the solution is not the issue, cost and effectiveness is.

Well as a drone pilot myself, I can see how drones would be perfect in certain applications but for deliveries? I'm not convinced they will be suitable? Ideal applications would be :- Aerial surveys, search and rescue situations and would make a great tool for the coast guard, police, paramedics or fire brigade. Why do I think drones are not suitable for general delivery of mail order items? Firstly the sheer number that would be needed, this has enormous implications for extra traffic in the air, crashes and danger to the public or property. Limitations of drone battery life and load carrying capacity, eg a drone might only be able to deliver one item them have to return to recharge or replace battery, will this even be economically viable? Environmental conditions, every house location is different, not all ideal for accepting a drone delivery, eg my house is surrounded by tall trees which would almost be impossible to negotiate by drone. What if the package is dropped in my pond or accidently over another garden. What happens if someone notices a drone dropping a delivery in your garden while you're out? There is a chance it could be stolen? Also delivery drones would become targets of theft, especially in inner city areas. The whole thing is fraught with problems that have no easy solution. Who would be controlling them, will they be autonomous? We haven't even got cars that can drive themselves without accidents so how are autonomous drones going to work? Also consider the people that already use the air space that delivery drones will be using ie 0-400ft is already in use by hobbyists worldwide in a wide variety of ways including radio controlled model aircraft, planes, drones etc also kite flyers, hot air balloons, paragliders, hang gliders, racing pigeons, falconry etc etc There are many more!! The current UK Drone code states:- Observe your drone at all times and don't fly within 50m of people or property. So how will that work with a delivery drone? It also states not to fly near airports or airfields Again how will that work with a delivery drone? Many people live near airports!

Amazon delivery drones will never be a reality over even reasonably dense cities. They may have been trialed in backwater places in the middle of nowhere, but big cities are another matter. I am not a criminal and have never been arrested in my life....But I am an electronics engineer and fpv drone flyer/builder. I cannot see a day, with current technology, where drones carrying potentially expensive cargoes, will routinely be whizzing over our heads. These drones will be autonomous. Therefore they will use gps, which utilises a frequency range of between 1- 1.5 GHz. This signal is VERY weak when it reaches the gps puck in the drone..Which makes it incredibly easy to jam/spoof, with a directional antenna. Once a drone loses it position, and is being actively jammed, it will have to land. It is the only safe thing it can do...it can't hover forever. At that point the payload is anyones for the taking.(or place the whole drone in a Faraday cage?) You never jam from the same place twice. If I can think of this, surely the criminals already have?

Not liking the idea of drones buzzing over head too although I like the idea of Amazon deliveries to my house as I have a large flat roof for them to land on, although bad weather may pose a problem, especially if I'm not in. Don't know why delivery drones aren't build like V22 Osprey, which are capable of VTOL but converts to wing mode in flight to increase range, loiter time, flight speed as well as reduce noise. Police forces should use them for tracking criminals and check on traffic problems rather than waking up residence with noisy expensive to run helicopters in the middle of the night as they do around my house so frequently.

Why are 'goods aircraft' in these types of reports always some generic camera platform octocopter or Phantom derivative? Surely it doesn't give the public the right expectations of these services if the method by which they would conduct themselves is misrepresented? Even the presenters comment on how uncomfortable it is to be near that type of aircraft, when every delivery service deployed currently uses fixed-wing planes! Another dangerous factor to this has been mentioned in the comments a lot - 'outrunner' motor configurations on racing quadcopters and camera platforms are not designed for the types of applications frequently mentioned in the media, but this type of skewing of the facts actually demonizes the activities they are intended for. It's like a bait and switch, you get people upset about the idea of these aircraft being near your home and property, then you tell them "Don't worry, we're only going to license commercial operators to use fixed-wing aircraft, we'll ban all those other types because you're obviously uncomfortable around them." The result is you're priming the public to get upset about leisure activities that lack a commercial interest, but to approve of activities that support those interests.

I'm a professional drone operator and builder of drones and this is all bollocks. 1/The most advanced battery technology at the moment only allows approx a 10-12 minute flight time each way at a maximum flight speed of about 30-35 mph assuming its dead calm and no wind speed, with a load/package this equates to about 4-5 miles maximum each way...and this is really pushing it, add 10mph wind and you could half that. I bet 80% of the time you have at least 10 mph winds and another 50% higher winds than that. so if you average the wind speed out on an average day the maximum flight distance each way is no more than a couple of miles! THE TRUCK MAY AS WELL DELIVER THE PARCEL ITSELF. With the most advanced battery technology available at the moment it takes an hour to charge them up..so unless the ups van is carrying as many spare batteries as parcels this is ridiculous. In the USA at least where gun control is almost none existent people will just shoot them out the sky...i bet it will become the next biggest gun sport. These size drones will cost approx 10k to build and if enough of them are shot out the sky it will cost too much to operate, additionally i know how many flights you will get out of each battery before its ready for the bin so add battery cost to the cost of the drone build and running the service and you'll end up with a delivery costing $50 plus...and who's going to pay that? Current obstacle avoidance technology wont be fast enough to detect bird strikes so there's more drones falling out the sky. i can buy on Ebay a cheap jammer that could also down the drone, all these points above would all make way for a black market in cheap advanced commercial drone electronics for sale. I could go on and on with technical reasons why it wont work but i'm off to bed and cant be bothered....peace.

Flight time wise, what you said only applies to rotorcraft, as they have to fight gravity nonstop. With fixed-wing aircraft, you can get much higher efficiencies. My motor glider can go at a pretty nice clip for around 45 minutes, and its battery is rather small. If I fully loaded my aircraft to its max takeoff weight with batteries, I could probably fly for an hour and a half or more.
