Rik was a genius! I went to a festival with live country bands some years back. Had my friends daughter sat on my shoulders and she couldn't see the stage and I was a bit wobbly. Bottom in my opinion was Rik Mayall's and Ade Edmondson's best work. I am not a huge fan of slapstick comedy but it's entertaining when it's done right. They also knew when the show had peaked rather than dragging it through the mud as what happens with allot of sitcoms e.g. Only Fools And Horses.

I agree that this is their best work, what helps to is the audience. They ain’t be told to laugh, they laugh because it’s genuinely funny seeing the chaos and energy unfolding in these episodes. Even when they do mess up a line or something the actors are so Charismatic they can get away with it. The live show too are a great example of how amazing they were.

In the 2000s Bottom seemed to fall out of the public consciousness for a while. It felt a bit 'of its time' and puerile. Now it seems to have found a new audience as well as those who loved it the first time around, as there's nothing else really quite like it, and everything feels a bit "safe" now comedy-wise. Not to mention its an absolute masterclass in physical comedy and facial expressions from Rik and Ade. I have to add that even I notice things upon rewatching it that i completely missed at the time. There's some genuinely clever stuff in the writing. I find myself quoting it nowadays more than ever. Especially on my birthday. 😂

Not at all. It's all about intent. Eddie and Richie say and do awful things but the show makes it very clear that they're awful and wrong and we laugh at them, not with them. Their actions often come back to bite them. That's fine, even now. If it had been a case of them saying and doing awful things and being rewarded for it or the show implying what they are saying or doing is acceptable and perfectly justified, then it would be outdated. It all comes down to intent. That's the difference between outdated comedy people find offensive and stuff like Bottom.
