I'm from Tennessee and have heard this song my whole life but never quite like this. Amazing!

That moment when you're jubilating with excitement listening to this... but you can't share it with everyone because very few people listen to harmonies :/

+Bobby Waksy You are so right Bobby, how about sharing a room with hundreds of jubilating harmony fans and come to Jacob's live show in Nov? If you've not seen him live it is likely to blow your mind! Check it out here bit.ly/EFGLJFtbjc

On 18 January (2017) Jacob performed his heartbreaking Tennessee Waltz, at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, London. Lucky for me, I was there and was blown away by the entire gig (with three other fine musicians.) This old song (with its American 'down home' cadences) seems to lend itself perfectly to Jacob Collier's extraordinary range of gifts and unique musicianship. Jacob has made it his own big time - as he does SO OFTEN with songs you might have thought had been consigned to history. Genius.

For such a young man to take such an old song and make it so rich and beautiful is a testament to his great talent. This much talent always rises to the top.

Want to know why this such genius-like playing? (tl;dr: understand the lyrics and the emotion he delivers them with) He sings it hesitant, almost nervous. Imagine he is telling you the story of how he lost his darling. He adds textures at the perfect moments and sings tiny, almost whined melody bits when it fits the lyrics. Because of the story, he emphasizes the lines about the song much more than those about how his friend stole his lover. The cluster chords elegantly showcase how torn apart his heart is about the situation and the strange bitterness that night left him with. This isn't just very well executed, musically exact or on point, it is a heartfelt and intimate recollection of heartbreak.

Exactly my point. This is text design at the highest level. And he finds sounds for this strange feeling of bitterness AND beauty at the same time...I know this feeling but I didn't know how it would sound...

This is by far the most expression I've ever heard reliant on chord and harmonies. This should be recognized as a master piece. No mater if you like the story or not, this is phenomenal.

@3:32 to @3:51 is my favorite section. Jacob is just fantastic. I agree with Scott Trefethen below, the technology can barely keep up with his talent. I hope by the time he's 30, we'll invent a way in which he can better project the music in his head into live sounds. That's really the dream for any musician.

Ok....why is it that I think that the technology is just barely keeping up with him. My sense is that he's probably one of the only people on the planet that can actually improvise multiple harmonies within the context of a "defined" song. Novation should just be saying, OK, what do we work on next?" Jacob is the musical Einstein of his day.

+Scott Trefethen Novation makes MIDI controllers, not the harmonizer itself.

Scott Trefethen omg I thought I'm the only one who is thinking hardly bout that
@paxmaniac17 жыл бұрын
Scott Trefethen As he says himself, the harmonizer is limited because it only has piano pitches. When he works in a studio multitracking, he has much more freedom with bending pitches and microtonal modulations. See "In the Deep Midwinter" for a good example.

Does anyone know what specific processing software he's got going on here? The Novation Impulse is just a MIDI controller so I'm assuming he's running it through some software.

@amaralvenamoris43078 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can read it on his website. Im sure there might be other things out there that sound like what he's using, but what JC is using is not available as far as I know. Please let me know if you find out otherwise.
@jordanputt8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Burson are you referring to "Woods"? because I'm pretty sure that was just multitracked vocals with autotune. Especially since the voices don't all sound at the same time on that song like they would have to if it was a single voice running through a processor. I'd say what Jacob uses here is more along the lines of what Imogen Heap did with "Hide and Seek", but this has a different timbre. Less vocoder-sounding and more natural.

very late answer, but if you have Logic or a similar DAW, you can use a midi controller side chained to a vocoder with your vocals and design it from there.

Get Jacob together with Herbie Hancock. It seems only fair after Herbie was the first to try his hand at the vocoder way back in 1978 on his recording "Sunlight". Poor Herbie took more heat from the purists for that record and it was such a good record.
