The Chauvet cave, in the Ardeche region of southern France, contains some of the oldest and most remarkable cave drawings ever found - yet it's been sealed shut since its discovery to preserve this precious art. Now a vast replica of the cave and its spectacular paintings has been built. Our science correspondent, Rebecca Morelle, can compares the two versions, because she's been given extremely rare access to the original cave.

This is a truly wonderful initiative. I knew from Werner Hertzog's wonderful documentary, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, that the Chauvet cave would be sealed and not available to the general public. The days where you could scamper up Uluru or the pyramids, or play hide and seek in the Colosseum are over. Fortunately we now have the technical means to replicate the experience.

I might be wrong, lol. I’m an American and never been to Uluru myself-but I thought people (ignorantly) still scampered up the rock, and used it as a toilet and all manner of unsavory things? Then when the rains come, all the waste gets washed down, forming toxic, anaerobic and stagnant pools of algae and deadly bacteria. Then animals drink it and die. People don’t heed the warnings not to climb, more or less... I was under the impression that there’s a mere sign “advising” visitors not to climb Uluru because of its ancient religious significance, a sign which people largely brush past as they continue to climb.

Absolutely amazing! Carbon dating disputes has put this between 28,000-37,000 years ago, but that also puts Homo-sapiens migrating into the region about the same time. This was an artist most definitely, but who painted it is the million dollar question.

What astonishes me is the cave painters used bumps and crevices on the walls to give a 3D effect on their drawings . It's been theorized that early people were of course part of the harsh life and death cycle of their environment and the creatures painted could be seen brothers and sisters to them. Just a thought.

because its fake. The real history is more amazing + an impossible journey from the bottom. The main reason for the harsh life an being stuck in a cave = is due to not listening or adhere to warnings. hundreds were sent to bring them back into the fold. when i hear the story ( i think it was a mind virus)

Cave paintings are some of the finest art ever produced! Where I live in the U.S. we have lots of limestone. Some of the best cement in the world is made 40 miles from my home. For whatever reason we don't seem to have nice caves like those in Europe. Native Americans, at least in my area, did not have caves like that in which to produce artwork.

I can’t speak for the others countries but in France, almost every prehistorical painted caves (like Lascaux or Chauvet) are usually located in the same regions like in Dordogne or Ariège... Theses places have somewhat identical specificities in terms of climate or hydrometry. Plus they were hidden in deep forests and rocks after thousands years since the men living there leave to become the proto-historical people of France. They remain closed until they were discovered in a totally random way and were very difficult to reach. Lascaux cave was found out and explored by teenagers who were speleology amateurs (like a lot of people in the area) and because they were searching for their dog who enter the cave by a small secondary channel... I don’t know the place you evoked in your comment but maybe the conditions of preservation were not the same.

@@thaleis Thanks for the information. In my part of the U.S. we don't have caves like those in France even though we have lots of limestone. I think there are deeper caves in other parts of the U.S. but so far as I know, no cave paintings like those in Europe have been found. There are some cave paintings in Mexico and Central America I think. In my area, indigenous people did create some interesting rock art which is above ground.

@@annalisette5897 It's at Winnemucca. Winnemucca Lake dried up, and it revealed prehistoric rock art underneath the former depths. The art is believed to be up to 14,800 years old. Aside from that, there's some other sites. Under Lake Michigan is a large stone containing a depiction of a mastodon or mammoth. La Mina cave, now underwater, also had an ochre mine, used to produce the paint materials. And finally, while the next one isn't from North America, it's worth mentioning here. A cave in spain has been found to be made by Neanderthals.

Genetic analysis done on ancient remains from around the world have shown that present day 'Europeans' have absolutely no relation at all to the earliest people of Europe. The results also show that those earliest people had dark skin and that those true Europeans remained dark skinned until settlers from the Middle East settled Europe around 10,000 years ago and absorbed and ultimately completely replaced the 'Europeans' at the time. So if present day 'Europeans' have no relation at all to the earliest people and that those true Europeans had dark skin, then what's all the fake news about a false 'migrant' 'crisis' about?

What are you talking about? Do you mean the the first homo sapiens who entered " European" territory around 40000 years ago? They cannot be distinguished from later immigrants, so you cannot say their genome does not exist in modern homo sapiens. Do you mean earlier? Those "Europeans" were Neanderthals and their genome is very well distinguished, so your wrong. Their skin colour is unknown, but one can presume that immigrants from the "middle east", who ultimately came from South of the Sahara belt or from todays' Algeria and Marocco, where darker skinned that the Neanderthals who lived in "Europe" for about 200'000 years.
