This is WILD! I ate something that made me sick over Christmas. I have spent the last few days in bed sick as a dog. I was visiting Bangkok with my GF and I was supposed to be on this flight back to South Korea with my GF (I’m American, she’s Korean). I’ve been crapping my brains out, so while getting ready to head to the airport I also started puking. We clearly couldn’t fly so we didn’t even try to get to the airport. We stayed back at the hotel and a few hours later I went on Twitter. When I saw my flight crashing into a wall on TV, I felt my entire life fly before my eyes. I am shook. If I had not gotten sick in Thailand over Christmas, we would both be dead.

That wall is a terrible design
@chillikongcarne812718 күн бұрын
What the BBC, in their infinite incompetence, are failing to show and tell you is that it didn't hit a wall. It hit an earth bank constructed in the airfield that the localiser antenna sat atop. Aircraft and earth banks don't mix unless the angle is very shallow allowing it to decelerate safely. This was built just to put the localiser on, roughly 3m high and earth at about 45 degrees, and there's another bank behind that, then a road around the perimeter of the airfield, then the perimeter wall which is roughly 50m beyond the first bank. The localiser sat atop a concrete foundation on top of the bank. Also not good. The perimeter wall appears to be, from photos available so far, to be intact because the impact with the bank destroyed the aircraft before it could even get that far. If you look at unedited footage you'll see that's what happened.

This was not the sole cause of a "bird strike" and "bad weather." There should never have been any physical obstructions built at the end of that runway first and foremost but the pilots and mismanagement of emergency protocols seem to be partly at fault. 179 deaths out of 181 total is appalling.
@philipkudrna564318 күн бұрын
There is a video showing the right engine in a compressor stall. So a bird strike might have occurred. But a bird strike should not affect the landing gear, which could easily have been extended manually. The fact that the pilots were unable to handle a simple bird strike and forgot to extend the landing gear after having retracted it after the first go around is one thing (and hints at an inexperienced crew overwhelmed with a malfunction that should be manageable). The fact that some idiot designed a massive concrete wall for the localizer antenna at the end of the runway is another story that will require closer analysis and will hopefully lead to design-changes in the future.

An investigation is underway, but another captain said in an interview that even if one side of the engine caught fire in the Bird Strike crash, the captain would be able to land enough. Boeing has nothing to do with this! crew error! The incident has been confirmed as a bird strike, with footage capturing the moment of impact. However, the tragedy appears to stem from a classic unstable approach. Less than three minutes passed between declaring an emergency and the failed landing-far too little time to properly go through the checklist. Alarmingly, the pilots attempted to land mid-runway. Unless there was a catastrophic loss of total control, this increasingly points to pilot error. 😒 We need the CVR for confirmation.

There was a bird strike reported by the crew. Maybe it happened during gear deployment and interfered with the full deployment? The video doesn't show anything until the touchdown had already happened so we don't know if the gear was down but collapsed or where along the runway the touchdown happened. The lack of deployed flaps seen on the video is a major red flag though that the landing was not configured right.

You're so right. I can only fly Ultralight planes and I do not understand the bird strike theory, as you have already mentioned. A bird strike would never have caused the gear not coming out, that Boeing is so fast with condolences and considering that it's a 737, raises many red flags. Many would have survived without a concrete wall, that's another strange part of the sad accident. May these poor people rest in Peace. I'm so sorry for the families and friends of them. A bird strike could cause catastrophic engine failure if a very large flock of birds hit an engine, potentially causing a fire and maybe a forced engine shutdown. From the footage, it's clearly visible that the landing gear is not deployed, so talking about a bird strike is illogical to me at this time of the investigation. It's a sad event, but journalists in general need to be more cautious about explaining these kinds of tragedies to ordinary people who only read or listen for 5 seconds. We need to wait for the authorities to conduct a thorough, official investigation to determine the real causes of this landing gear malfunction.
@journeysalkebulan18 күн бұрын
Sure because the authorities will tell the truth! Meanwhile you are here acting as if you know exactly what happened. Thanks no it all! 🤯
@nofilternoise18 күн бұрын
@@journeysalkebulan No, I'm here because I keep hearing about a bird strike when the footage doesn't indicate anything related to a possible bird strike. I'm just an enthusiast, very passionate about aviation, and in all the information I've studied over the years, I've never read or learned about failures that correlate a bird strike to a possible malfunction of the landing gears. What I meant, which you obviously didn't understand, is that to speak to people who know nothing about specific topics, not even remotely, it takes a lot of tact, because there have been victims and out of respect for them, the information should be as TRUE as possible, without assuming things based on nothing because they are very complicated accidents and to be evaluated they require investigations by highly qualified people. I hope I have clarified the nature of the comment.

I can see where OP is coming from as well though; esp when there's a breaking story, they can tend to reiterate pretty basic points or ask questions we all know the answers to already. Two questions - why wasn’t the landing gear deployed manually? Why was the plane as such a high rate of speed while attempting the emergency landing?
@Ceo_killer_official18 күн бұрын
yeah that’s the questions most people are asking but there isn’t much clear info on it rn, many speculate this could be human error: maybe the pilots were overworked or didn’t have enough time to deploy them cause on this specific aircraft the manual deployment thing is located in a tricky location about the speed many speculate it to be hydraulic failure anyways there’s many videos on this already but for now we can really only speculate cause like I said there isn’t clear information

Stop saying the bird strike caused the landing gear from not deploying. They should have had the gear down way before the bird strike.
@danh672018 күн бұрын
There is no reason the gear has to be down before a bird strike. You don’t get to pick when a bird strike occurs. It seems unlikely that a a bird strike would prevent all those hydraulic components from operating, but unlikely isn’t the same as no chance.

5 Questions: 1) How would the (recorded) birdstrike to the starboard engine affect the landing gear? 2) Why didn't they touchdown earlier on the runway? 3) Why were they coming in so fast? 4) Why weren't the flaps down? 5) After the initial approach coming in over the water, why did they circle around and land towards the water?

1.Control tower warned about bird strike. 2.1~2mins later the pilot called a Mayday. 3.On first landing attempt, the tower could not see the landing gear out and called for a Go around. 4.Pilot asks for an immediate emergency landing from the opposite direction of runway due to multiple malfunction including engines.5. the Pilot had to speed up the plane to keep it away from stalling at low altitude. Cabin was filled with toxic gas and smokes. He had to land the plane ASAP then he performed wonderful belly landing but sadly there was nothing he can do to reduce the speed quickly until the plane hits the wall at high speed.Then Collision. Also the record tells us that the pilot tried to pull up the plane but it just strated to dive after few seconds. Presumably, lost thrust due to both engine failure or something similiar. The pilots are the experts who can handle much better than all the non-expert comentators here. I guess he tried all the best he could but unfortunate things happened 1 after another. That's it. It must have been completely different if the pilot had ignored the 1st - Go around order and land from the right direction. I heard the other side was rice paddy or mud or whatever.But ,it is already over. We can only mourn. This is devastating loss.

ATC usually monitor landing and take offs as well as the fire department watch room attendent. Why did they not see the landing was not deployed, if they had known about the landing gear not out why were the emergency vehicles not on alert and on standby for the aircraft. There needs to be thorough investigation including ATC and fire department.

How does a bird strike to the engine cause the hydraulics to the wheels to malfuncfion this part just does not make any sense to me...
@josesaraiva956618 күн бұрын
Even with hydraulic failures like some point out, the landing gear can descend by manual action causing the descent by the force of gravity. The fact that the runway has no foam is very strange, it's the first thing you do when there is an emergency grounding, it also looks like the firefighters d'ont used foam, there would be visible residue and I didn't see it. Finally, that concrete barrier shouldn't be there, this is the main cause of death for so many people, it doesn't make sense to have a barrier like that at the end of the runway...
@Kiran_Nath18 күн бұрын
@josesaraiva9566 Yes you are right! I forgot that the landing gears can also be forced down manually by gravity. That makes it even more strange, it will likely take a while for the investigations to reveal why this was the case.
@Omen55018 күн бұрын
Yeah it doesnt make sense because the bird would just be blended and sliced up and the engine wouldve been fine and no one wouldve noticed, so it isnt a bird problem.
