"How ordinary men could find themselves in this position" - these men didn't just stumble into raping this poor woman. Describing their actions in the passive state takes away all responsibility for their actions and places these rapists in the victim position. How's about "how ordinary men could do such things"? It seems like a minor point, but language is extremely powerful.
@livinginthenowКүн бұрын
I had a similar reaction to that phrasing, but I think two things are important to remember. 1. English is not his native language (although he does speak it quite well), and the subtleties of using the passive tense may not translate for him. And, 2. He did make a point about them not being "ordinary" men, but instead being men who chose to rape a woman (who is elderly, unconscious, and doing so while the act is being filmed). He made it clear that each of these men CHOSE to commit these horrific acts. And for that clarification, I'm going to give him a pass on the passive phrasing.

It is almost easier to deal with this kind of trauma when it is done by complete strangers. It is on a whole different level when it is done in the 'safety' of your home by someone who swore to love and protect you 50 years ago. This woman literally woke up one day just to be told, by a police officer, that she was the victim of assault. A lot of emotions must have gone through her about the person she thought she knew, bit she didn't. She doesn't recollect the actual rapes, but she will always remember the betrayal by her husband and father of her children. I am not minimising the actual assaults. If you and you son feel revulsion at this outrageous case, then DO something about it! As the lawyer said, these were “ordinary men,” not a bunch of sociopaths inside a prison. That means there are MANY ordinary men out there who would and do commit terrible crimes against women. Unfortunately, as much as women have tried to bring this issue to the forefront, MEN DO NOT ACT to reduce these terrible crimes. It is proven that men do not listen to women who speak about this…it is easy to label such women as “man-hating feminists” and discount what they have to say. But there is some chance they will listen to other MEN. So what do you and your son do? First, educate yourself. Look at the abuses women suffer around the world. Look at the statistics here in the U.S. and in other countries as to how many women are raped, physically abused, and/or murdered by men. Then look for a group that works towards addressing this, like ones that go into schools to talk with young men and women or works with parenting groups to raise healthier boys, etc. Frankly, I am tired of male outrage at what women suffer. It is self-serving. You can feel like one of the good guys because you are outraged. But that doesn’t change anything. Remember, “If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.”

Until there is a verdict on each man, the press need to keep saying allegedly so that if any get off on a technicality, they can’t sue the press for libel. The press believe it happened, they just have to protect themselves until it’s all confirmed legally.

The reason people do what they do is because they can. If convinced they will never be caught/punished, human beings are capable of everything. Society at large has equated (individual) freedom to "anything goes" and lack of responsibility. Morality is nothing but an abstraction.

This case is tattooed on my mind now. One of the most heinous rape cases I've ever heard of. The husband's betrayal, drugging her and letting complete strangers violate her in the most horrific, humiliating way for _years,_ the mother of his children. I wouldn't survive something like that, I'd leave this life - simple as that. When this case broke, I foolishly read comments on various platforms and forums, and it was shocking to see the many indignant males automatically siding with the husband, how it must've been her fault, she was either a "lying horny old woman" or trying to set him up. That has stayed with me as well. How so many men simply hate us. 😞

Stop describing the rapists as "ordinary men" This normalizes violence and rape
@CraigsOverijse21 сағат бұрын
unfrotunately though that is the reality too many apparently "ordinary men" turned out to be not that in this case. It does not normalise rape and sex violence what it does is explode the myth that sex preditors are a breed apart. Yes not all men are rapists but it is shocking that almost none of them in this case thought what they did was wrong and pled guilty.

I'm part of the alternative sexual community and these types of things ( getting a wife to perform a sexual act without explicit consent) is normal to the men. A lot of them are wired to see women as sexual objects. I'm not shocked at all. I'm so happy I'm single.

This woman took her power back by doing whatever the law allowed to make sure this story would be as wide spread as possible even though all she could show is her own face. Most sexual abusers have been abused themselves, and been raised in very “off” environments sexually- basically in families with no sexual “boundaries”- the parents have sex with each other in front of the kids, with friends, neighbours, strangers, with their parents, with the kids, and encourage the kids to have sex with each other. There is just no teaching of what is appropriate and there is no teaching of consent- the kids are victims until they are big enough to prey on others. Most victims do not become abusers, but some do, and they multiple victims, so the cycle persists.

When is society going to teach males, when are parents going to teach boys, to feel shame of the sexual obsession and sexualised behaviour they have?
@alisongreen7576Сағат бұрын
It’s not about sex, it’s about power- sex is just the weapon. We need to teach boys that yes, they have physical power over women generally, and that with that power comes great responsibility. It’s really about “punching down”- inflicting your misery on someone who can’t stop you- women, children, animals, weaker men…. We don’t see fit 6ft 4 men who weigh 200lbs being abused very often do we?

I have been following this case for some time and agree that Madame Pelican is indeed a brave women for agreeing to endure the harassment, public shaming, and other types of abuse that go along with speaking out about such crimes. That, in a nutshell, shows how messed up our world is that it continues to try and blame women and exonerate men for these crimes. The scariest truth in this whole trial is that these were “ordinary men” who sought out and took advantage of the opportunity to abuse this woman. And that’s the bare truth of it all and why it is horrific because these are not sociopaths…these are men who are fully functioning in society otherwise. This case should force people to ask deep questions…questions that are rarely asked as to why ordinary men commit such crimes? And if you don’t believe they do, you have your head in a hole because the statistics are there. Just look at how many women are raped, physically abused, and/or murdered annually all across the world. It is an epidemic that is rarely addressed, and as such, has been basically condoned, ignored, and minimized by society. When women speak up about it, they are frequently called “man-hating feminists” and discounted or ostracized. They are sometimes even targeted for being vocal and not knowing their place. In this way, such crimes against women are allowed to continue. Many men will be “outraged” about these violent acts against women. But their outrage is self-serving. By being outraged, they can count themselves among the “good guys” who would never hurt a woman. But their outrage changes NOTHING. What I’d like to see as a result of the Pelicot trial is for MEN to actively work towards ending the violence against women by educating themselves on this issue, coming together with other men to form groups or join groups that address how to change male behavior…go talk to young school-age boys or parenting groups or athletes or Boys Clubs. TAKE ACTION! That would be the best way to honor Madame Pelicot’s bravery.
