The Z8 could handle like a lorry and I wouldn't care, it's still one of the most beautiful modern cars and one of the few where retro styling was executed properly. Clarkson is really much too harsh on the original, the Z8 was a very competent car, maybe a little too soft for a sports car, but as a GT it was about perfect and the M5 V8 is glorious. Too bad nothing was truly improved in the Alpina version, but that doesn't change the fact that this was more of a hit piece than a fair review.

Sorry but 95k for that new is shocking. You could've gotten a 350z which handles better, arguably looks better and is similarly paced for 25k. Ok yes the BMW is higher quality in terms of interior and probably engine but 3-4 times as much? No way.

That's funny. I used to work down the street from a BMW dealership. My office faced the corner where they pulled out to start test drives. Every time someone tested the Z8, they would do the exact pendulum swing overcorrected turn Jeremy described. Still, would KILL to own one.

Actually, this was before they retested the Murcielago. The original lap was with an artificially wet track, and when they did it dry, the Lambo pulled a 1:23, which tied it for the lead at that point.

Ok I watch top gear a lot and I love it, I know that they sometimes use strange metaphors and have their own sense of humor, but saying that the Z8 drives anything like that truck is just stupid. There were so many different things that they could have used if they wanted to but by using the truck, jeremy lost all credibility in his argument. Jeremy, BMW never announced that they would stop making the Z8, it was only meant for a limited run to begin with. The Z8 was one of the best cars ever!

You know, how he compares it to that scania in the beginning, hes totally right. The bmw z8 provides a sense of wonder at every turn and every stop, making you beg for whatever is going to come next :D. You know, as hard as he tries to bad talk it, notice all the smiling, laughs and fun had in it. In fact, i think thats what catagory this car was made for. Having senseless fun. And when you combine that with its shotty handling and awful traction, you have fun ass daily driver :D

During the recent snow I spoke to several people who got stuck - most of them drove BMWs! True. Rear wheel drive = problems in bad weather. Other people had no problems, they all had little front wheel drive hatches. And if you think British cars are poor then you should see any american car!

Wer annähernd das Gefühl möchte und dennoch einen Sportlichen BMW Roadster mit Wertsteigerung will den empfehle ich einen Z3 M oder 3.0 (alltagstauglicher). Selbst die 1.8 und 1.9er 4 Zylinder sind sehr Preisstabil und ziehen sogar an obwohl die meisten Baujahre noch nicht mal 20 Jahre alt sind.

From what I’ve heard, a lot of the issues the Z8 and the V8 roadster had in press reviews can be at least partly attributed to the run flats BMW put on its press cars at the time. Also, having watched Harry Metcalf’s video on the Z8, it was kind of the start of this retro style thing that later led to the new mini and 500, and BMW’s marketing wasn’t super focused, so journalists and prospective buyers at the time were a bit confused as to what it was supposed to be. I really recommend Harry’s Garage video on the Z8.

Ehm yes. He likes quite a few bmw's. All the M5's. When he drove the m5 v10 he said it was almost as good as a f430. He chose the e46 m3 over the Audi S4. He loved the e46 M3 CSL when he drove it on isle of man. He nominated the new 5-series for best car of the year, said it was all you could possible want in a car. And to top it of, he owned a bmw 3.0 csl.

The Stig is a pro driver they got to help them test their cars. Since he is the one who chalks up the timings for the various cars they will be in a sense, more or less fair, cos he is always the one driving them.

You are right about the previous M3 it did have some mistakes , but not alot , the X3 and the 1-Series is not my choice , but the X5 is I`ve driven one and it was fantasticly comfortable and well handled .

@15point51 - new low sulfur diesel is actually pretty great, and the diesel engine's higher compression ratio means it gets more power out of the same amount of fuel. And that's even without factoring in the extra 22,000 BTUs per gallon in diesel fuel. But diesel engines generally only have a few thousand revs, and then you have to shift - so IMO, they're not as fun. And the cast iron engines are rather heavy. But the massive amount of torque is rather fun, especially in the industrial world.

330hp for a naturaly aspirated engine is still pretty impressive. bmw doesn't make a whole lot of turbocharged engine because they like to keep a constant power curve with luxury and smoothness in mind. m3's engine is very responsive thou, with one throtle body per cylinder. yes you can turbocharge them, but you are looking at paying 10k just to get around 100-150hp.

please re-read my comment. for the automotive illiterate, drivetrain means the engine, "transmission", driveshaft, differentials, and axles, and sometimes the wheels and brakes. A vocab expert like yourself should know the meaning of that word. My point was your arguing about BMW's reliability, and it's not even a BMW car, its BMW coachwork. The drivetrain was made by Alpina.

you're so wrong, for starters the veyron has a 8 liter W16 engine, not a 10 liter V16... further more it dosn't go from 0-100km/h in 1.2 seconds but 2.5 and I'm not sure about the ammount of torque you say. It does however have 1001hp's powered by 4 turbo's and is indeed the fastest car in the world with a top speed of 150mph / 407Km/h
