When he puts on the hat, it's like a combination of pathetic and embarrassing. Martin Freeman was so much better than John Krasiniski. The character wasn't meant for him to be a cool guy, the U.S. Office made the Jim character cool and he had a lot of potential. Tim was kind of a loser, and I think it worked so much better.
@JohnQ11279 жыл бұрын
+steaksauce androb, Yep, the American office misses the mark often. It's also terrible casting. John Krasiniski is also about 6' 3" compared to Martin Freeman at 5' 6". That's like getting a guy like Finchy to play Tim. Tim's not really a loser, he's more a sympathetic character. You're right in that the American version played Tim/Jim as a much more of a cool guy.
@Lewis---8 жыл бұрын
I think that's a great example of a cultural difference between most British and American sitcoms. Amercians prefer 'winners', the cooler slicker people who are purposefully funny and who can be backed and cheered for. Brits prefer 'losers', the tragic hopeless people who are accidentally funny and who can be laughed *at*. The UK loves to self-deprecate. I personally prefer the UK approach as the characters feel more relatable. We've all done stupid things and felt down on our luck at some point.
@JohnQ11278 жыл бұрын
Lewis Hay, One of the biggest problems of American comedy in the last 30-35 years is that they don't display social class remotely accurately. People with working class jobs often live upper middle class lives. A coffee waitress might live the same lifestyle as a Manhattan lawyer. A delivery man lives in spacious beautiful 4 bedroom home and supports a wife & 3 children. People with demanding jobs seemingly only have to work 5-10 hours a week. Actually in the U.S. then notion of social class doesn't really exist. The term "working class" doesn't really exist. It's depicted or portrayed something like this: 1% Super Rich 9% Rich 85% Middle Class 4% Poor 1% Homeless/Destitute Another problem with American comedy in the last 40 years is development of the white "Fratbro" archetype. This is a character based on the stereotypical drunken American college fraternity boy. *Anti intellectual, actual proud of ignorance. *Party and Drinking all day and trying to get laid. *May not be an athlete but huge sports fan especially violent sports like American Football & Ice Hockey. *Homophobic *Subtly racist *Jock humor *Frat Boy Hijinks *Sexual Hijinks, borderline Date Rape John Blutarsky in Animal House is the archetype. Stifler American Pie, Van Wilder Andrew Dice Clay and Dane Cook in stand up comedy. The crazy thing is that a lot of young American Men have actually copied most of this archetype in real life.
@Lewis---8 жыл бұрын
JohnQ1127 Good breakdown. You know your stuff!
@johnhein25398 жыл бұрын
Lewis Hay You seem to know your stuff too. Yeah Ted Mosby had a humongous and beautiful apartment when he was "trying to get off his feet." Malcolm in the Middle was one of the rare outliers dealt with the pains of being lower than middle class. Whereas Brit shows like Spaced and Black Books (though a bit Kafkaesque) seemed to capture some of that realism that comes with being low class. I guess Americans are closer to Indian Bollywood where it's about escapism when it comes to comedy. But I wouldn't mind a comedic show with a character closer to my life, who deals with the Breaking Bad level bleakness that comes with being impoverished, a "failure," and not being able to afford things like "health insurance." It might require inventiveness to work, but that's what writing comedy is.

Finch's nasty, menacing tone among the "fun" to Ricky telling him not to mess with the big boys. Gareth as clueless and easily led by the mob as ever. And Fray Bentos. Brilliant.

Chris Finch is the kind of person a young lad just starting in the workplace wouldn't stand up to, hence his little speech about respecting elders. He's also the kind of person who eventually would get put in their place by someone a bit more experienced in life, so generally he wouldn't behave like that to someone who might retaliate. He wouldn't have got in Lee's face, for instance, because he knew Lee had a short temper. The person who he does eventually cross, and puts him in his place by words alone ends up being Brent of course.

Tried the traditional thing of putting a single memorable quote from the video into the comments...I can't. There's too many brilliant lines!

My favourite line in the whole series: "They're sad little men? He's thrown a kettle over a pub, what have you done?"

Watching this and thinking back to when I was about 12 and first watched the office back then. I really identified with Tim at school and pretty much thought my life would end up like his. I'm so happy that it hasn't, and actually it really makes me appreciate how well I've done with my life which isn't something I'd usually feel.

Throwing a kettle over the pub " I don't agree with that in the workplace !

The most uncomfortable and probably most important scene in the whole series. It shows up so much about Brent and obviously Finchy (bloody good rep though)
@ysgol34 жыл бұрын
Yes, spot on. Try telling that to the Finchys who've posted here though !
