Forty-two years ago during my first marriage my Father-In-Law, Bob, was a deacon in the Metropolitan Community Church here in Atlanta, and he and his partner, Steve, took me out to all the top gay bars in Atlanta for my bachelor party. This was at a time when being gay in Atlanta meant getting fired with impunity the morning after the boss found out. It was a very guarded time. But the leather... I had never seen finer craftsmanship on leather since the Houston Livestock Parade in 1978! Every man -- and woman -- wearing leather in the bar was impeccably dressed in his finest gear. This was leather that just had to be designed and executed by an expert with decades of experience. No other way it could have been that perfectly done. German Silver fittings on some of them, solid hardware rather than cheap chrome-plated Chinese junk, and a tanning and polish that would have passed the Inspector General's most unforgiving inspection of a Marine Corps barracks. Each gay bar was like a self-contained Milan Runway for leather, and really GOOD-quality leather; not a cheap piece anywhere in sight. Also, I had no idea that leather could cover so very much of the human body in a practical sense, but then I saw "The Gimp" in Pulp Fiction 12 years later and exclaimed, "Hey! I've SEEN that!" I remember, there was the Texas Drilling Company (which was a great name for a gay bar), the Answer, Backstreet, and one the name of which I don't remember but it had a black sign with white lettering. "The Eagle," maybe? As AIDS -- still called GRIDS at that time for Gay-Related Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome -- decimated the gay community, taking many of my wife's and my friends with it, the bars went, too. Those bars are all long gone now. It was good to see this side of my in-laws. They've both passed, and I miss them very much.
