I have never spoken to someone with CP or a speech impediment and I just realized that I REALLY need to unlearn these biases that I and a lot of people have thinking that someone is mentally slow because of how they talk. I have been living a truly ignorant life. I have never met anyone with cp like these people. I honestly thought that when you had cerebral palsy that you were stuck in a wheel chair with little to no ability to speak or perform simple tasks(this was the case for the two people I've ever met).I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone. I honestly had no idea it was a broader spectrum. Thank you for making me a little less ignorant!

CP, almost always leaves the brain fully intact! It's a disorder only caused by accidents when a baby is born. They're not dumb, they just have issues with movement, speech, and posture. Since people with more severe cases tend to not talk at all & twitch rather than move people often assume they're stupid, but given the right tools they will be able to converse like a normal person! It is a really interesting disorder. If you want to learn more about CP theres an AMAZING comedian/activist named Maysoon Zayid. She has a Ted Talk called "I got 99 problems and palsy is just one". Shes awesome and was what opened my eyes to this unique and diverse disorder. I strongly suggest you watch it, its only 15 minutes and shes so funny.

I honestly thought the same thing. I recently got a job working with people with disabilities and we have 2 people with CP and one is non-verbal. Can't move at all but he is so smart. He communicates with his eyes. He always knows every answer way before anyone else. Their brain is so very much there. I felt bad for living this long and not knowing. But I want to blame schools, they don't educate us on disabilities in school. They really should.

Cristina Yeah, basically it depends, the brain has so many parts, and each one is the responsible of certain area. I think that the diseases that have people on wheelchairs is more related to the spine rather that the brain.

I walk with a limp because I have a small form of CP and people always stop me when I'm walking like "Are you okay? You hurt your leg?" Like seriously, I'm fine and I know they mean the best but it's annoying af since it doesn't just happen once. Everybody wanting to save you gets really irritating when you don't need saving.

My adopted sister has really bad cerebral palsy because as an infant in El Salvador, her dad beat her and the orphanage did nothing to heal her. She had too long to be left to her injuries to reach the capability and cognitive thinking that these people in the video have. She will forever be in the mentality of a four year old with little mobility. But she adores classical music, having books read to her, and talking to absolutely anyone she sees. She's made entirely of love for everyone.

All that matters is life quality. If she is happy it doesn't matter she can't move much or that her intellectual ability is compromised. People are just so fixed on "normalizing" everyone, and if they don't behave "normally" they pitty them, as if their life is a failure. No, if they are happy in life I envy them. I'm not happy.

I also love these video's! But I don't think all people have bad manners who ask some kind of questions. For example, I wouldn't know what's appropriate to ask or say to some people. I would really like to ask them some questions, because I don't know much about some diseases and stuff, but of course I would never want to be rude to them. But I think I would end up asking nothing, because I think these people get asked questions all the time. I really like these video's so I can see how it's from their perspective :)

My son has mild hemiplegic cerebral palsy on his right side. Periodically he has to have a cast on it as a physio intervention, can’t tell you how it does my head why people come up to me and say has be broke his leg!?? I’m like yeah of course I let my 3.5 year old walk about with a broken leg.

Really loved watching these guys speak UP. All of them have have a sense of humor which is ever so vital regardless. I've heard a few of the comments made by these guys and yes people can be so rude with questions asked. By answering people sarcastically is a beautiful way of shutting people's mouths up. I wish all of these guys well.

I have right side hemiplegic cerebral palsy and the guy that said “if I needed help I’d ask, if I don’t ask then leave me alone” sums up my motto in a heart beat. It’s one of my pet peeves when someone asks if I need help because then it makes me feel like I can’t do anything by myself. I know someone who is such a nice person but whenever they see someone else having trouble with something (putting things in a bag, getting things organized, etc), they automatically ask if they can help. It may not bother another person (who has two working hands) as much but when they ask “can I help” to me it really makes me mad. There was a time that this person asked if they could help both to me and another person (without CP). We both said “no thanks, I actually don’t like when people ask me for help because it makes me feel like I can’t do anything” and someone else said “they were being nice about it” and I just got mad about it because nobody knows the struggle of trying to be independent while only using one hand. All in all, it may look like I’m struggling because I’m only using one hand, but I’ve been this way all my life so I’ve learned to adapt everything to my needs. The only time I accept help from someone is when I ask, and unless it’s my family that I’m asking for help, I usually get so shy and anxious about asking for help because I’m sometimes embarrassed to ask for help when a typical person can do a task by themselves that I may need help with. Also the woman that said “I can do it, it might take me a minute, but I can do it” is another one of my mottos. I typically take longer with some tasks than other people doing the same thing, which doesn’t mean I need help, it means my brain is wired different and special to me. Moral of the story, let people with CP and other physical disabilities do things for themselves independently unless they ask. It may take them longer to do it, but they will still do a task to the best of their ability.

Tip: I turned closed captioning on to understand what everyone is saying :) I'm learning so much from these videos! When I was in high school, I was part of a vocal class that had students with disabilities (not all the classes were integrated but this one was), most of the students with disabilities had cerebral palsy. The special needs teachers would often remind the other students that mentally, the students with CP are perfectly normal and we should make friends with them like anybody else. I have quite a bit of social anxiety, so I find it hard to meet new people anyway, but the uncertainty of how to speak to somebody with CP made me even more anxious and uncomfortable, and also, not being able to understand them easily also added to the awkwardness/embarrassment I felt. Because of this, I never really was able to really become friends with any of them aside from very surface level small talk. I always remember that with a sense of guilt and regret, and I think, how can I avoid doing the same thing in the future. I think videos like this really help so thank you!

People who don't have a disability don't usually realize how lucky they are to have their own life, so they think it's a good idea to bully those who don't look, act, or seem the same as them. (I am grateful I have my life, though, unlike many other people my age.)
