Help me better understand cricket... is the bowler obligated to throw the ball off the ground? If the batter swings and misses, are they dismissed? And if the ball only hits the players shin padding, they are dismissed?

if the batter swings and misses is depends on where the ball ends up after the miss. if it comes crashing into the stumps, thats out.
