I built a direct heat BBQ in this video. The inspiration came from Chuds BBQ's Chud Box. Check out Bradley's channel and his website. Link below. This direct heat cooker is a cross between a grill and a smoker, most comparable to a barrel type cooker. This was a lot of fun and puts out great food! Thanks for watching!

/ chudsbbq
Dimensions of the cooker:
Made with 7ga (3/16") thick HR pickled and oiled sheet metal.
Width- 36"
Depth- 24"
Overall height- 41" (Includes caster height)
Height from fire surface to cooking surface- 28"
Height from cooking surface to lid- 8"
Height of door- 22"
Width of door- 32"
Air intake opening dimensions- 2.75" tall, 6" wide
Disclaimer: I have no sponsors nor do I get any kickbacks or benefits whatsoever if you purchase any of these items. I only wanted to share what was used in the video.
All the metal, hinges, and lettering was purchased from Coremark Metals in Minneapolis. Great staff and a great selection of items!

Thank you! I've cooked on it 4 times now with no issues regarding the wheels but it's been 40°F or colder each time. Might be an issue in the summer when it's a bit warmer. If they melt I'll definitely let you know! I did get some droop in the bottom plate during the first cook due to heat. I've since reinforced the bottom with some angle iron. Seems to work pretty good. I'm currently building a "Mini Chud Box". Video coming soon! Thanks again for the inspiration! Nick

Tractor supply has fire bricks for like $2/per. They're great insulators and really help any fire... Smoker, fire place whatever. I use them in my smoker In place of water pans and to diffuse heat. You guys could line the bottom of your chud pits. I'll be welding one up soon too.

Awesome build, I’m planning on building one of these this summer. I’m thinking of adding a removable deflector half way between the coals and the cooking rack. I want to use it as a smoker and a direct cooker, thoughts?
@fabmakebuildcook6274
@fabmakebuildcook6274 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The deflector might be beneficial for longer duration cooks but I'm only guessing. The direct heat is what makes these things what they are. I personally burn coals and wood in this and love the flavor it provides. Plus cooking on an open flame is pretty sweet. You can always build your fire on one side and have your meat on the other so it'll be kind of a indirect cook. Something worth trying anyway. Hope it works out!

Good to see another Minnesotan bbq guy. This summer I’m planning on building my own direct heat hog cooker similar to yours. On mine I think I might do something different with the smoke stacks. Thanks Fred. I personally haven't noticed any hot spots on the cooker but haven't been monitoring that closely either. Typically I do two zones while cooking. Tried psi at 40 and 60. It cut better at 40 than 60 but no where as clean as yours was cutting. After doing 1 cut and half way through the second cut I put a yeswelder guide on and it cut so much better. Using the cut 55ds cutting 1/4" hot rolled steel.

Good job mister. The video popped up after I watched Chudman's mini Chud box build this week. I'm making a small version down here in South Africa, maybe slightly smaller than his next month . One question how much smoke you notice pulling out yours? You even had it l lit up inside. My concern is upstairs neighbour's as mine will sit on a balcony outside.
@fabmakebuildcook6274
@fabmakebuildcook6274 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daniel. If you just use charcoal there will be minimal smoke. Adding wood will generate a lot more smoke if not pre-burned down to coals. While cooking, the juices dripping off the meat into your coals will flare up and provide some smoke but it shouldn't be too bad. Would be similar to a weber kettle for the most part. Have fun building and good luck!
@MrBiginvegas
@MrBiginvegas 3 жыл бұрын
@@fabmakebuildcook6274 Thanks. My guess on a long slow cook just keep replenishing with lit coals instead of wood then? It's seems what traditional Hill country BBQ's have been doing for years transferring coals rather than tossing wood onto them.

Thanks Gaston! I do like the YesWelder's I have. The welder has done everything I need it to do so far, but am planning on getting their TIG machine so I can be more capable with stainless steel (High freq. start and foot pedal for amperage control). The plasma cutter works great and am very happy with its performance. I do plan on selling units but will have very little capacity to start. You interested in one? Thanks for watching!
