The leaders of British Columbia's three major political parties clashed Tuesday night in the provincial election campaign's sole televised debate.
The 90-minute event saw no knockout blows, but several spirited exchanges and, refreshingly, less crosstalk than some political debates of the past due to a format that saw more one-on-one exchanges between the candidates and moderator Shachi Kurl, president of the Angus Reid Institute.
With less than two weeks until election day and polls showing a dead heat between the BC NDP and the BC Conservatives, the debate could play a pivotal role in swaying undecided voters.

We saw Mr. Rustad speak in Sechelt a few weeks back and were pleasantly surprised at how incredibly knowledgeable he is. Answered every question in detail. The NDP try labeling him as extreme. He's anything but! He's had 3 covid shots, so he's not the rabid anti vaxxer Eby tries to label.. One thing is for sure, BC is wildly broken and rapidly approaching bankruptcy on its current path. Mr Rustad won our support and I wish him success in this election.

@@JR-rm4nw His plan is to push efficiency hard and not simply taxxing BC people $9 billion the next 3 years while rebating only 3.5. Mixing every type of energy supply & considering adding carbon free nuclear to fill the massive shortfall we have because in BC, we Imported 20% last year, and projections are massive additional demand the next several years. We are at high risk of brown outs soon! We rely far too much on our neighbours, Alberta and Washington. If we get too much cold or hot weather, and they have no extra to sell us, we're in trouble. Estimated are 800,000 new people by 2030. Multiple massive LNG & mining projects going forward in BC mean we need another 30% base power and Eby has ZERO plan besides some paltry renewables which won't even cover a single year of growth demand. 16 billion for site c dam that flooded 10,000 hectares of (carbon sink) forest, farm land and displaced farmers and first Nations people, yet only produce as much power as Alberta's newest, worlds most efficient gas plant, 62% lower co2 than coal, and able to tie into their co2 carbon capture system being built. Cost 1.4 billion and full first Nation partnerships. Surrey new 168 bed hospital cost estimate already estimated to be 3.0 BILLION?! How?! Meaning likely 4+ when done. Again, just HOW?! EBY inherited a budget surplus from Mr. Horgan, in economically strong times, yet has projected at least 25 BILLION in new debt the next 3 years!! And NOTHING is getting better here! 17 Mines can't get approvals, 65% of the forestry industry is gone under the NDP. Small business taxes are out of control. BC has added some 30% to Canada's total opiods supply since safe supply. Multiple busts in Prince George and other cities. One bust alone found 10,000+ safe supply pills in possession of drug pushers making even more addicts with the convenient pills. My fiance works long term health care, and they are seriously understaffed. We've been on every wait list here on the sunshine coast and the provincial registry list nearly 3.5 years. Still waiting. False promises from EBY that we'll get contacted soon with health care options when in another city. Nothing! Not even walk in clinics on the sunshine coast. Emergency room only and taking to local health care people, it's only getting worse. BC cannot afford Eby's NDP any longer. Period.

We have lots of energy to sell to make bc rich. I don’t want a government that just taxes the citizen as their only way of creating money. @@Uncle_Dragon Maybe they pay 30% of all taxes. I cannot find proof of that. Claiming they pay 30% of the taxes, while they are cleaning up on over 80 % of the profits is actually admitting they pay far too little.

We need to move away from such a focus on extracting resources and instead add value to those resources here. Turn our wood into products, refine our own oil, etc. instead of just growing the economy by extracting more and faster. Pretty shallow meme there bud. The poverty level has actually fallen under the NDP, especially for the disadvantaged. I'm not impressed with their centrist policies, but it is a lie to claim they are making things worse. Things have improved for most low income folks under the NDP, as compared to what was going on under their predecessors. I will admit they have become insular since they gained a Majority, but the way to resolve that is to give them a Minority, with the Greens holding the balance, to insure they work harder than they have been of late.

He acted like a child throwing a tantrum during the whole debate and constantly tried to provoke the conservative leader. I didn't know much about Rustad but I appreciate his upfront approach and trying to stick to the topics of the debate. The one thing that stuck out was when the question was how the budget would be handled and projects paid for the conservative leader mentioned making cuts in sectors that eat up tax payers money with no improvements and investing in other sectors instead. While Eby just went on some random story about his conversation with a young man who stacked boxes and then got a welding apprenticeship trying to make him seem relatable, while avoiding the question entirely. But left out the fact the NDP are going to take away grant money for apprenticeships. Can't wait to see some actual changes in BC and also Canada as a whole.

It was like that under the Socreds and the BC Liberals as well. One of the reasons that area is so downtrodden is a direct result of the centralization of services, which began under the Bennett administration and has continued through successive governments of all stripes. Blaming it on Eby just demonstrates that you really have not done any research on the issue. BC has always had a massive drug problem, going all the way back to the Chinese opium dens. The reason is the weather. BC is the only province in Canada that has territory (lower mainland and island) where people with no resources can potentially live outside 24/7 without freezing to death. Conservative Party of BC is not for free enterprise. They support supply side economics an the supply side theory of unfettered price gouging based on which corporations can distort consumer perceptions of value the most, which limits competition. They think individuals can't be trusted with prosperity, so social welfare has to flow to the top instead of the bottom. Not much is going to change with Neo-liberals and Conservatives in power, as they really have no interest in fiscal responsibility. Nothing fiscal about relatively crumb-like benefits for the little people and while making more of them pay more dollars into a system that feeds monopolisitic outfits and socializes the manufacutred failures and losses of big corporations through a corrupt tax regime. This has little resemblance of capitalism let alone real competition.

@@AngelinaSkye1695 Lowering the carbon tax will do little. Carbon pricing is just an easy scapegoat for price gouging. You do know that the carbon pricing systems provide a type of rebate” to firms in the form of subsidies based on how much they produce, and they never pass on the savings to the consumer. Brings to mind the surge in inflation we have seen since the pandemic has been experienced across almost all industrial countries, whether they had carbon pricing or not. The US had no carbon tax, and they experienced a higher bout of inflation than we did. Carbon tax has been baked in years before prices spiked. What you pay at the pump is all fabricated by algorithms that elude enforcement of pricing schemes. What is interesting is crude oil is purchased in long term contracts. Some folk think it is the spot price we all get quoted in the media. When the spot price rises, the pump price jumps fast, and when the spot price falls, we know what usually happens ; ) Note this happens in unison among brands, but of course the government says they can't prove price fixing or gouging, which is a lie, because the price is arbitrary and not based on shipping costs and other costs. Such is the reality when oil majors having economies the size of nations.

The hyper focus on the carbon tax is absolutely ridiculous. Even if it gets eliminated, it won't bring the cost of living down. It simply will put more money into the greedy corporations that control the market. If we want anytime to change in Canada, we need to bring in price control. Taxing working class people into poverty is not a solution. We need price control, wage reform, corporate tax increase, home ownership control. Housing is a human right. It should not be tied to our economic status. AND WE NEED to get the homeless crisis cleaned up. We also need to reform our tax system. The working class pays more taxes than anyone else. People are forced to have 2 to 3 jobs to live in basement suites. That is criminal.

John Rustad seems to have forgotten that training doctors and nurses take time, and when they were in power for over 17 years they put next to zero effort on strengthening the healthcare situations in small towns and remote locations in BC. Let’s be honest, most doctors and nurses would rather collect less money to live in a big metropolitan area such as Vancouver, than Merritt. It’s the same reason why people drive from Abbotsford into Vancouver for restaurants, bars, and clubs - you have to incentivize skilled labourers to move to remote locations to practice medicine and to live.

There are creative solutions to the problem but NDP being NDP cannot countenance them out of ideology Objectively we spend CAD6000 per capita on healthcare, but outcomes are not commensurate. If Rustad is elected and cannot deliver, u can count on me speaking out against him. We have a malaise in this country, and that's called the acceptance of mediocrity. Rustad and his party had 15 years to address these issues, and all they did was focus on making one another rich. The cuts to mental health services, rural hospitals, social programs, education and the like under the Campbell-Clark administrations is what set the table for the mess we have now. Have the NDP done as well as they should have? Certainly not, but they have been considerably better at addressing problems and trying to fix then than their predecessors ever were. Do they deserve another Majority? Certainly not. We were better off when there were Greens holding their feet to the fire. However, to even suggest that John Rustad (who was part and parcel of the Campbell-Clark legacy) and his party have serious resolutions to our problems if cray cray. They are working from the old play book of dissing the sitting government while offering no substantive policy plans at all.

As long as current and future homeowners are not just satisfied with paying off their mortgages and to build equity, plus want prices to rise faster than earnings in the local economy at the expense of affordability for those who follow, the crisis of housing affordability will never get resolved no matter how much you reduce immigration, curb foreign buyers or property flippers. The political will does not exist to resolve the crisis nor do most home owners want to see more supply created where needed the most because it threatens their financial asset’s potential; and all political parties know this.

John Rustad is like a constipated turtle. I've never seen a more uncharismatic candidate in my life. No platform, weird stories, and the legacy of BC liberals. No thanks!

You should have heard his story where he recounts how his wife became unable to have kids and offered to divorce him because she knew he wanted kids, but he refused and stuck by her side. Brought a tear to my eye.

If I am unable to raise rent between tenancies in order to keep pace with inflation, I am more likely to remove the rental house from the market.

British Columbians should not be paying anything close to these rental prices. If you have a solution other than telling people to move, I'd love to hear it.

It's one thing to increase the rent to keep up with interest rates, home insurance and taxes. But it's another thing to exceed that for greed or adding to personal financial goals. It seems like the only people who can afford rentals are boomers or Gen X. I can't see Millennials ever owning rentals, until their parents pass. Gen Z will be unlikely to ever own a home!

@@x_x8865it's not society's fault that landlords took the risk to buy property at historic prices with unsustainable interest rates. If landlords were a company we would call it a risky investment, yet when it's John down the street we think investments should be risk free.

The free market has failed the housing market in Canada in general. Esp in BC. The years the BC Liberials were in power (when John Rustad was a cabinet minister), BC saw some of the highest inflation in housing prices (remember this was decades before COVID-induced inflation). More heavy-handed government intervention is needed. Housing prices MUST fall further. This is coming from a homeowner myself by the way. Housing should primary be a dwelling for people to live in, we must disuade market forces on turning homes into investment vehicles
