A 55-year-old Vancouver family physician, who suffered a massive heart attack after exercising on a rowing machine in early February, has made a full recovery after a cutting-edge cardiac machine helped bring him back to life after being clinically dead for nearly an hour.
After Chris Dawkins went into cardiac arrest and lost consciousness, the quick actions of his wife to call 911, along with new response protocols to cardiac victims, put into motion a series of events that would help Dawkins avoid long-term brain injuries and death.
Dawkins' wife began administering CPR, in order to keep oxygen pumping to his brain. It takes between five to 10 minutes without oxygen for the brain to experience irreparable damage
Once advanced life-saving paramedics arrived, Dawkins was put on a state-of-the-art Lucas machine, which provides portable automatic chest compression.
By the time Dawkins arrived at Vancouver's St. Paul’s Hospital and was hooked up to a heart-lung bypass machine, his heart hadn't beat for more than hour.
Now, nine weeks after the incident, a healthy Dawkins met with the paramedics and surgeons who saved his life.
Tanya Beja reports.

He wasn't dead. If he was he wouldn't be there talking. Nobody came back from death.

Damn, and that guy doesn't look unwell at all. These things can strike at any time evidently. Great technology.
