The BCA driver knows his truck is slower so why try overtaking
@rx6180
@rx6180 3 ай бұрын
That's the point I was making. In the video we are near Oxford and the transporter carrying Range Rovers is heading to Southampton docks, near to where I'm headed but not exactly my destination. So there's a hundred-ish miles still to go. These BCA transporters carrying Range Rovers are up and down the A34 all week long all day long. So the drivers SHOULD know the roads and SHOULD know the performance of their vehicles. So, I'd passed him, DPD had passed him, on the flat, where the national speed limit applied. DPD and me slowed to 50 for a semi-urban area, and like around half the truck drivers out there (some leaving comments on this upload saying I'm 'old school' and should 'get with it') the BCA driver kept his foot down to try to pass me, and the DPD lorry, in the 50 zone presumably thinking WE were holding him up, with 100 miles still to go. Yet as soon as we leave the 50 zone, DPD and myself can pass him again so he's in the same position he was before he broke the speed limit. But, the DPD driver decided he didn't WANT to have to pass the law breaking BCA transporter again so like about 99% of truck drivers he kept his toe down once he got out of the 50 zone, enraging the BCA driver who you can see angrily flashes his headlights at the back of the DPD lorry when he's forced to pull back in to the left. And then I cruised past the transporter again in my little 7.5T truck that can get up to about 57mph. If the BCA driver had stuck to 50, by the time he got to Southampton he'd have lost - probably nothing, because at some point he would be held by traffic lights or be waiting at a roundabout. I know. I've done it. I've tried driving to not be held up, and struggled to get past bigger trucks going downhill that I've nearly passed and then they undertake and won't let me back in. And in the end, you lose nothing or very little by not driving like an idiot and being a bit more patient. But I'm not a life long truck driver. It was a career change from something else and at the moment out of choice I'm just part-time. But some of these people driving like idiots are life long career truck drivers, and I'd expect with their experience they should know better. But I see these scenes repeated day in, day out.

Everyone has a point and I agree with it all. If you are fully loaded and facing a gradient regardless of the lower speed limit imposed by local authorities for whatever reason the challenge in keeping up with the lower speed on a gradient is impossible for a driver with a truck with just enough power to last long enough for the accounts department to get the money back after the duration they assessed, makes sense that he did keep up his speed and not drop to a crawl on the gradient of a busy A road… but we’re looking at three vehicles, three people driving them and one person speaking up. I would not say you are wrong, looking at your cam you drove well and aware of other road users like the transporter… old school lol you can not drive like the days of old today but I see your point looking from your camera driving over the limits is not acceptable… an underpowered vehicle fully loaded driven along the same route day in day out and I think there’s a flat rate of pay with bonus rates added on the amount of trips per week.. and you have to sleep in the truck four nights a week to make it pay.. driving trucks isn’t anything like it was five years ago, the next step is driverless vehicles on trunk routes and I only imagine the computer that drove the truck would not last long on the roads today in fact I think one lane of the motorway would be purely for driverless transportation vehicles… who knows, but transportation by road is incredibly secure for businesses, Covid proved that

I had the same on the M5 at 6.00 am on a Sunday. Coming out of the roadworks northbound. I’m overtaking a GIST wagon, as soon as we hit the national speed limit he put his foot down & held me neck & neck. I gave him a blast on the horn & wouldn’t look at me. A total bell end. Give way to your right, it’s very very simple & if you drive a truck, take your foot off the gas for 10 seconds. I promise it won’t make your day any longer & car drivers will think your a professional driver instead of a complete Cnut!

Totally agree , regarding speed limit situation. But I myself ( a hgv driver ) have started overtaking other hgvs . And the majority let you pass & politely flash lights once safely pass , letting you in . But there are a minority who find that extra speed & decide to leave you out to dry . Personally I think the DPD driver had just compounded a situation that could have been easily diffused by letting the transporter pass . He could then overtake afterwards if he increases speed . I’ve slowed slightly to allow other vehicles to pass . When my speed increases, usually due to conditions & inclines etc . Safer & professional to just let them pass. Not create a mobile road block & risk increase of an accident. Once , I was literally stuck behind ( with many other motorists) 2 duelling trucks . Occupying 2 lanes of motorway. For over 4 miles . That’s ridiculous. But hey ! As most hgv & other regular road users know . We see many examples of poor driving every time we go out .

@@transporter49 No. When I was editing footage, I thought at that point (at least where I cut a bit out and the image jumps) I looked a bit too close. At the time, - after being on the road since 3am and driving for nearly two hours, with at least another 30 minutes before I take a break before carrying on for another hour - at the time, I'd not immediately noticed. I don't claim to be perfect. I don't claim to never make a mistake. What I wasn't doing was deliberately, intentionally, either breaking speed limits or blocking other vehicles. I've already made this admission in another reply to another comment when someone made a similar accusation but those comments just get lost down the page. I wanted to upload this, so I couldn't change my own relatively short error when considering my entire journey length, when I WOULDN'T be driving up somebody's arse for the entire time. Believe it or not I am VERY aware of the lack of crash protection in an HGV. I'm at the front. If I hit a car, the car would come of worse. If I hit the back of a lorry, I come off worse. Doesn't mean I can't drive for eight and a half hours plus, in a single shift, cover over 360 miles and NEVER EVER make an error of some sort. That would be pretty miraculous. I try my best to not drive like a moron though. But some people make a career out of it.

@rx6180
@rx6180 3 ай бұрын
I agree. That would be the proper thing to do. However this game is played out by HGVs countless times every day across the country and around the world probably. When I did my training the theory test book had notes about easing off to less others passing you get back over to the left, but nearly nobody does it. It’s pedal to the metal 99.999% of the time. Here, I was wazzed off with the BCA driver who I’d already passed, coming by because he hadn’t slowed for the 50 zone, but again, around half of lorry drivers never slow down for reduced speed limits. The BCA driver just ran out of road before the speed limit was lifted and I could see what was going to happen, which is why I started doing the commentary and turned the radio down, because it happens hundreds of times a day. It’s so predictable. The DPD driver got the red mist, I sometimes do as well but now I’ve started uploading some of these dash cam videos that’s my therapy. If you get caught on my camera doing something stupid, it’s going on KZbin. My biggest hate is starting to pass a slower truck then the gradient changes and goes downhill, and the bigger heavier truck I’m passing speeds up with the weight of the load pushing it and the driver cheerfully undertakes me and leaves me in the outside lane with cars behind me, only to slow down on the flat so eventually I pass him again. Day after day this happens. I try to learn the roads to try to only pass slower trucks when they are going uphill, so the a…holes can’t accelerate while I’m passing.

We still flash in over here. Well, some of us do. It depends sometimes - under what circumstances you were just passed and weather is another ingredient - if it's foul weather with poor visibility its common courtesy to flash the other guy in after he/she has passed in a long vehicle and you usually get thanked. I have to say I'm probably not under the same pressure some drivers are, I'm usually out 10.5 to 11 hours and haven't got anything to follow up on the same shift. But it takes all sorts of personalities to make truck (and coach) drivers just like it does car drivers, and some are careful and courteous and some are selfish idiots who don't care about road rules.

Unfortunately I know that is not the case. The BCA transporters carrying Range Rovers travel this road (the A34) daily between Oxford and the M3 motorway leading to Southampton docks. The 50mph speed reduction is through a semi-urban area past the A420 to Swindon, with a number of slip roads and side turns and the odd bus stop. That’s interesting what you say about Class 2 cutting in. That’s the license I hold but currently I’m doing a 7.5T job and the vehicle I use is pretty nippy, and being cut up by other overtaking trucks isn’t something I’ve experienced a lot of, but maybe it’s because not many Class 2 come past me? I don’t know. I know I’ve always followed the habit of not indicating to come back in after passing a truck or bus until I can clearly see both it’s headlights in my ‘flat’ nearside mirror plus a bit more. Once in a while I get ‘flashed’ to move back before I’m ready! I’ll say this much about Class 1 with regards to overtaking - with me not having the benefit of the experience of driving those on the road, but often having to move the tractor units around our yard when starting a shift or parking at the end, I find the different convex curves of the mirrors difficult to adjust to when reversing, and that’s without a trailer! I know it’s just a matter of familiarity, but I was away from driving rigids for a few years but getting back into it was like getting back on a bicycle, but I do respect the ability to reverse trailers, it isn’t really something I ever wanted to move up to.

@rx6180 some drivers say Class 1 is easier, as indeed they are more flexible ( round corners or passing obstructions or reversing , just simply longer) compared to a long class 2 with more than one rear axle or - heaven forbid- one of those forklifts on the back making that back swing even more a risk to BMw drivers behind trying to UNDERTAKE UNDER YOUR CHASSIS.. The main risk in class 1 I would say is that beeing the slowest boat on the sea and the rest of motorist World is taking constantly advantage of your slow predictable movements ( amd despite beeing slow and heavy and predicable i am still puzzled by the sheer number of motorists wgich cannit hey past me when legal and safe Lol) . And the other main hazard is losing sight of other vehicles or " banksmen" ( rarely properly trained) behind you when reversing ,[ as cab and mirrors move position, ] walking past the rear of the trailer awaiting an early death as they don't understand basic physics..

Certain car drivers are something else! Yeah my first stint at Class 2 was 2011-2016 then I went back to fixing things for people until 2021. Now part time. Hence the 7.5 when I could drive bigger - it’s local, it’s my old employer, it’s about 25 hours a week and it was mutually convenient for me and them when it came up. Back when I started in 2011 I heard the ‘artics are easier than Class 2 because they bend’ thing. The irony is everyone I knew then who drove Class 2 who is still there is now Class 1 - it’s where all the work is. Had I stayed I might have been Class 1 by now, but in 2016 circumstances were different and I needed to leave. Biggest truck I got let out in was 26 tonne two rear axles, one Volvo, one MAN which was brand new and on loan for about six weeks. Yes a little swingy with the rear axle up but not too bad. No fork lift on the back! When I see others backing trailers into tight slots in the yard or our garage bays I don’t know how they do it TBH. It’s a tight yard and not well lit at night. Don’t know how they do it when they can’t see in mirrors on the blind side. I know mostly they like to look out the window drivers side to see where the trailer is. I prefer seeing my truck rear end in the mirrors all the time LOL.

I drove a 7tonner ERF with a 5 cylinder Gardiner engine, crash gear box and no power steering or brakes. It did have cruise control to my design, a piece of 2"x 1" timber that jammed the throttle wide open when installed under the dash. One kick and it released but when driving from London to Chepstow, S.Wales it was a godsend as the trucks speed was 40mph downhill with the wind behind it.

Stupid by the car transporter. He was slower and he knew it, He tried to overtake by breaking the law. Mindless. All he had to do was observe the speed limits and when they were out of the 50 zone switch on his cruise control lean back and relax enjoy his and let the other guy get on with his day. The DPD guy just followed the law. Observe to 50 limit and then accelerate to his cruising speed. Hopefully he kept an eye on the idiot trying to overtake and if a situation had arisen he would have been a professional driver and let him in in order to avoid an accident. The car transporter didn't care he was never in a position to avoid an Accident..

A great many are criticising the DPD driver in the comments section, for out-accelerating the transporter trying to get past. I can see the point. It would have been safer to let the transporter get past then pass him again. Driving is very confrontational though I find. There are many battles to be fought out there. Yes there are rules to be followed but a great many drivers ignore them, including so-called professional drivers and I'm supposedly among them. The transporter driver ignored the speed limit to try to gain a totally pointless advantage, that he'd immediately lose once out of the 50mph limit, and the DPD driver got his hackles raised by the transporter driver's 'confrontational' illegal overtaking action and decided to defend his existing position on the road by blocking him from getting past, knowing already his vehicle was capable of going faster, because he'd passed the transporter once already, before this section of video. For my money the transporter driver was the bigger offender and the stupidest, for doing 55mph in a 50 limit, but the DPD driver wasn't blameless, though I understand why he did what he did. Then there are those among the comments that think I'm the biggest cause of a potential accident because yep, even I, looking at the footage think I got a bit closer to the DPD lorry than I ought to have done at one point, so somehow everything is all my fault...

@@rx6180 I agree with you, I have driven long haul all over Europe and this is a common occurrence. People being stupid. The transporter guy was stupid and the dpd guy silly. In the interests of safety the DPD guy should have let him in. We have I am sure both of us been in the situation where you are chugging along on cruise, just getting on with your day. Bit of down hill and some *****' of a driver overtakes you. Next uphill section he slows down and slows you down. You want to pass him but you have to let the convoy of cars that he created while overtaking you through. Then it goes downhill again and he pulls away a bit. Next uphill and you have caught him up again And so it goes on. This is when you decide that a 45 sounds like a good idea and you revert back to enjoying your day.

@@derekpresland4029 Absolutely. I'm strictly UK only and part time these days but this road in the video - the A34 between Oxford and Southampton - is about 60 miles long and I'm on it frequently. It goes up and down and up and down and especially when I'm on the return trip during everyone else's rush hour, I'm very often stuck going uphill, behind something that has passed me on a downhill bit, with a never ending stream of cars in the outer lane - and occasionally an optimistic 44 tonner behind them too, as a spec in my mirror! 🤣 The rigid I'm in has a decent turn of speed and on the job I'm on I'm usually lightly loaded (logistics eh?) but being a regular on the A34, I try to judge my overtaking moves to rises when the bigger vehicle is unable to accelerate to block me or undertake me. Occasionally I get caught out and mis-remember the road, or the bigger vehicle that I'm catching suddenly finds some extra speed, and what is shown in this video happens to me. That's why car drivers get infuriated with truck drivers taking all day to pass. What I've often found - and I learned this more than ten years ago (I'm a career change guy, not a life-long trucker) when I began driving for work, is if I catch something doing 54mph and my truck can do 56mph, usually if I press the accelerator hard to try to pass, my truck just makes a bit more noise but doesn't seem to be able to go any faster! 😆 That's when I drop back, hit the cruise control and stay at 54! The thing that gets me is, you can drive like a maniac trying to get to your destination as early as possible, then get kept waiting for a loading bay! And I've come to believe, on my own runs anyway, that losing a couple of mph for certain sections of my journey is neither here nor there on the total drive time, when it comes to the tacho and running out of hours. There are enough road crashes, lane closures and diversions to muck that up. So yeah, the crazy, pass-at-all-costs drivers do confuse me.

The trouble is a lot of modern cars and I would guess also vans have very optimistic speedometers. I'm gauging this off the speed readout on my TomTom and you're entitled to question that, but I'm not just making that judgement off the TomTom readout across different vehicles I put it in, but also those road signs that light up to tell you your speed. I've found the TomTom to be very accurate against those. It's pretty accurate against the speedos in most trucks I've driven and matched the speed readout on a Mercedes and one Volvo car I owned, but in a Vauxhall Astra I owned and a company Ford Mondeo I drove a few years ago, their speedometers read 5mph faster than the TomTom. My current car's speedo is 2mph fast, which I can cope with. When I had the Vauxhall I thought I was doing 70 on the motorway and I was only doing 65 and everyone was coming past me! I think that's why you get people doing 45mph in road works on motorways with a 50 limit and average speed cameras - they bung their car in cruise control at 50mph and its doing 5mph less. Rumour has it - but I'm not testing it - that those average speed cameras tolerate up to 55mph which explains why so many trucks exceed the limits yet I assume the drivers don't get busted because they still need to work and hold a license! The foreign registered trucks - your guess is as good as mine. Probably untouchable over here. So if you had a truck going down a hill the driver could let it run over 60mph and it wouldn't get flagged up on the tacho if he got below 60 before 1 minute had passed, but if you were doing and indicated 68 you MIGHT (it's a suggestion, I don't know for sure) be really doing 63 if you speedo over reads like some do. So that might be a reason you get the impression they're doing 70. I tend to find those trucks festooned with decorative lights always go very fast. Owner-drivers I assume. Possibly gave the person calibrating the speed limiter a little incentive to be generous with the setting. Supermarket HGVs tend to be the slowest. Royal Mail and Parcelforce are pretty brisk. So are pretty much all 4 axle tippers I come across and a lot of tankers. TomTom says mine tops out at 57mph and I can pass some stuff and get passed by other stuff. But in all honesty I've never been passed on the flat by a truck that I thought was doing 70. My estimate has been that some of those trucks lit up like a Christmas tree must have been calibrated to do an actual 60mph. Fastest truck I ever drove did 58mph according to my TomTom - but the tacho still said it was doing 90kph (truck speed readouts are in kph) and usually 90kph is what they are all set at. So they can be set at 90kph and do 55mph and another truck be set at 90kph and it'll do 58mph. I don't know why - I'm not involved with the calibration. But that's why you get lorries taking all day to pass one another because in theory they are all doing 90kph flat out but some are just a little bit faster than others.

Most cars speedos under read. Some trucks are calibrated very close the the actual speed... Whenever I'm on a 50mph average speed zone I overtake loads of cars at 50mph and I'm sure they all think I'm speeding.. If you were doing 50mph on the speedo in a modern car/van theres a good chance your only going 45mph. As a class 1 driver I think the DPD driver was being a dick. I'd have let the BCA past. I've seen it loads on max speed roads I catch another lorry up quickly, pull out to overtake then it takes me 10x longer to overtake than it did to catch it. Then when I'm infront it disappears in my mirrors. All because the twat in the drivers seat doesn't like being overtaken.

@rx6180 2 ай бұрын
I think you meant that car speedos over read? Makes out the car is faster than it is? I've driven a Mondeo and an Astra that read a clear mph faster than they were actually going. My current car, a Volvo, reads 2mph fast. Yes I get that thing where I catch a truck, take ages to pass it then it disappears in the distance when eventually I get in front. I do wonder if air turbulence has some effect on my own vehicle speed as I'm passing. It seems to be something that afflicts most trucks. However in this instance, DPD clearly opened up the gap between me and him as he put his foot down!

This morning one of the transporters loaded with Range Rovers - not a BCA tractor though, dark blue with white logo that I didn't catch - went to the outside lane coming up to the roundabout where the A34 joins the M3 down south, I was in the 'slow' lane to turn right in my puddle jumper onto the M3 but ahead of me was an artic with a double decker trailer - when the traffic lights turned green the transporter couldn't get past the double decker on the roundabout, but he stayed in the right lane - accelerated down the slip road on the outside when we reached it, got level with the double decker, merged with the M3, then they hit the hills, neck and neck, then the transporter slowed and had to drop back. I'd stayed back anyway, then the transporter slowed to something like 40 going up the incline and I passed him easily. This is what confuses me - why do these drivers not know how to understand how their vehicles perform, fully laden with expensive SUVs? It's going to be slow up hills. So why try and force your way past other good vehicles in the 'slow' lane on a roundabout when you are going to get passed again anyway?

I'll accept the point in the footage there's a moment or two where I too think I've crept a bit too close to DPD, which suggests he (being the bigger vehicle) had actually dropped to below 50mph and I'd maintained around 50, and had crept up on him. Point taken. As for the car transporter breaking the speed limit, yeah, I can't enforce it. It happens hundreds maybe thousands of times a day. Lorries and coaches. I'm not bothered about cars, that's a given. If you've got a vocational license you are supposed to be better than that. However, the reason why I saved and uploaded this to KZbin wasn't so much the car transporter overtook me in a 50 zone doing over 50, it was the performance that then followed between the DPD driver and the BCA transporter driver, fighting like petulant children. I think the BCA driver did the greater wrong, because he broke the 50 speed limit, to get past us both in a vehicle that was ultimately heavier and slower, so he was going to get left behind again. A pointless exercise. Which gave him no significant gain on his journey time with his destination still being about two hours away. But, despite me being wazzed off by the BCA truck trying to 'win by cheating' by doing over 50 in the 50 zone, if I'd been the one in front, I'd had let him have his way, then pull out and pass him again. Which is why I captioned "Now the fun begins" in the clip, because SO many times I see mostly artic drivers not giving way to another artic drivers passing them, and I knew exactly what was about to happen. Its just this time I caught the footage happening right in front of me, saw what was about to happen, and turned off the radio and did the talky bit because I thought 'this is going to go on KZbin.' Because of all the crap driving that goes off, that just gets passed by. That day I caught some of it. And I think vocational drivers should try to be better. And I get all that about tachographs, and 4.5 hours before a break - on the run I do it's a challenge every day, to get to a place where I can take a break before going over 4.5 hours, and then do the delivery and get back to base before needing another 45 minute break, which the company don't really want to pay me for. Occasionally I have to, but most of the time I manage it, despite road closures, diversions and other people crashing into each other. And, as I said to somebody else who commented negatively about my own driving, if the police or DVSA had been on the scene, and they do patrol these roads quite regularly, I don't think I would be the one that they'd have been stopping.
