I will be trying this for sure, thanks for unwittingly backing up my own ideas on this. Greetings from the UK. Norm.

Excellent!! I waited for a long for a trick like this.
@bclogstairandrail11 жыл бұрын
I actually started working on it after a couple of days. Depending on the way the wood is going to shrink will depend on how, where and how dry the wood needs to be. If you take a look at what you are building you need to ask is this going to tighten up or have a gap as it drys and where should I put any hardware so that it does not crack the wood. Hope this helps :)

Hello. nice video again.Thank you for the information. Backing up a step, would the final bottom cuts be made before the washing begins?

Noticed that the log piece had a "wet" look when you started. Had it just been sitting in the rain, soaked with a hose(?), or ... had it been immersed in a pond ... and if so ... for how long? Thinking about what could soften the bark and provide a more workable contrast of "soft bark" to "harder" inner wood?
@bclogstairandrail Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. With Red Cedar, as long as it hasn't been sitting in the sun for months, the bark comes off very easily. It could have been wet from rain, or I may have given it a quick wash off before the video, I can't remember. At the end of the video, it's just wet from the pressure washing. I hope this helps.

how long did this piece have to dry before you started work on it? great job on the vids... I've learned a lot just watching and am starting my own projects using your techniques

David- Thank you for sharing your craft with us! I have enjoyed every episode and hope to build functional works of art like yours! How difficult is it to find stumps like the one in this video?

Beautiful! Was using a pressure washer today, wondering if a person could peel logs with it. This answers my question! Is it possible to peel aspen, poplar, pine, spruce?
@bclogstairandrail6 жыл бұрын
Joel Hill . It seems to work on all types of wood, however, it a lot harder the thicker the bark. I have used a plastic fallers wedge bolted to a shovel handle to spud the bark off and then pressure washed it afterwards, this stop the log from getting damaged. Hope that helps. ☺

Thank you, My pleasure :) It depends on where you live, out here on Vancouver Island they are easy to find, but I imagine if you live in the prairies they would be hard to come by.

Do you need different psi for different types of wood? Any tips for thinner bark? Thanks for your video.
@bclogstairandrail5 жыл бұрын
Just pull the tip away further or closer till it works for you.

Awesome. Thank You! I wonder - Does anyone know if this method can be used to remove the outer bark from whole burls? If so, is it easier with some types of wood than others?
@bclogstairandrail12 жыл бұрын
Certainly works on Pine and I would imagine cherry to, just remember, it won't leave a nice finish on it from about May till September because the spring growth is soft and not hard. :)

Is it painful for the tree?
@bclogstairandrail11 жыл бұрын
Probable! Sometimes if the bark is really thick I peel it with a plastic wedge attached to a stick. About 2700- 3500psi with a rotating head.:)

Hi, I'd like to ask you a question about pressure washing logs, is it possible to peel directly with a pressure washer also spruce or pine woods? How many PSI or BAR needed? Thank you in advance and have a wonderful week end
@jeffsiddons522010 жыл бұрын
Did you use an electric or gas-powered pressure washer? Do you think electric 2700 psi would get the job done as well for red cedar from Missouri, US? Thanks for the video! Looks great!

Hello, I'm building a fence and planning to use Juniper roundwood-- but it's been sitting bark on for 2 years "curing" do you think it will debark easily enough? What do you recommend?
@bclogstairandrail6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but I think that it might work. I would give it a go. :)

Thank you so much for your answer I think I will buy a 3500 Psi pressure washer, I will let you know how it will work with Italian spruce and larch :-)

@theclarks62807 жыл бұрын
how do you dry the wood afterwards so it is stable enough to build without cracking?
@bclogstairandrail7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately there is no way to stop it from cracking, however if you put wax on the cut ends it slows the drying process and reduces the cracking.
@bclogstairandrail12 жыл бұрын
I do the final cut after I've cleaned it up that way I can see what i'm doing and also have something to clean to put my lines on. :)

Do they have to be green?
@bclogstairandrail11 ай бұрын
No, it depends on the look you are after, however, to get the smooth shine they need to be green and cut usually between September and May. Otherwise, the spring growth is on and they will look dull and fuzzy.
