Thank you for your insight. I try to tell people that they are the cause and the solution to their dog's reactivity issues. They get very defensive, especially if they already own dogs. They think owning a few small lap dogs is enough experience to be an expert in a large working breed. I've heard Joel say you need to work with hundreds of dogs before you can even call yourself experienced with dogs. The day/night behavior change when with your friend and then back home is a great example of the human being the cause and the solution. Great job with your dog!

I’ve watched a lot of your videos but this one in particular was a huge unlock for me and my 2 year old rescue husky. She’s older than your recommending for treats here, but adding just a little bit of them (just a few of my reinforcements included one) was huge for our 30-min routine walk, first time i was loose leash the entire time. We did the entire walk with almost no pulling, we encountered 1 dog and required some corrections, but could continue after. I was shocked. Usually we make it just 3 minutes into the walk before I have her on a short leash because of the wandering and pulling. I can’t say it was just this video that did it as we’ve practiced a lot of your guidance, but I think adding in the “we aren’t going forward until there’s no walking in front” plus just a bit of treat reinforcement was huge. Thank you for these.

The rescue dog I took in, a Boxer Staff cross, had severe leash reactivity when I first got him. He was as bad as the worst dogs that I've seen on here. Anxious, dominant and very strong. Im my house he would bark at lampshades, hoovers etc. I sorted that out in a couple of months, now he is great in the house. With lot of work and calming methods and a lot of treats outside, I could get to within 40-50 ft of another dog before he reacted but no closer. Using Beckman's leash popping method and the use of my legs and touch, I can now get within 5 ft of a dog before he reacts. When he does react now, it is a playful reaction, not a fearful, lounging reaction anymore. I have even manage to even get him to sniff a couple of dogs, and they sniff him. Still work to do, but this method is the better than any other method. Thanks Beckman, subscribed!

She is a quick learner so I wasn’t too shocked but when I tell you she was by my side for a good 2 blocks….she was so good!! We do however have leash reactivity for other dogs and we seen the same one from yesterday…..she still had fur up and stood there with her weight pulling against me….so I just pulled her bc the leash had no slack at that point….then I sat her down after walking a few steps and she stood there looking at me and got a reward Edit: I’m glad I found your channel before I could start leash work with her because she’s getting really big….she’s already around 70 lbs at 7 months old….she’s just gonna bulk out more and I can’t have a big ass dog pulling me down the street (for reference I’m a little over 100lbs so…that would be a big issue)

Last night, on our neighborhood walk, I let him look at the German Shepherd that is also reactive. I let him look for a short time, but then told him lets go. I was so happy he made the choice to move on, instead of lunging crazily like he usually does. Even the shepherd only let out one little bark instead of going crazy.

The walk is for me too I don’t what to wrestle with the dog the whole time. I don’t relieve my stress that way. I have a very smart 150lb mastiff and your methods have been perfect for us. Her thing is she wants to run to play with other dogs. But her dragging me to another dog is terrifying for everyone. Great video & yes, you cleared that out perfectly! Some are bold "I want to pull to what I want" and some other's have a different reactivity. I would love to see daily or weekly progress on this one, seeing whether the dog reactivity gets "better" or he'll have those freak-outs at least once a day (crossing dogs). We can already see in the video the second possible freak-out is well prevented but does it help his mental state in the longer term? How he feels about crossing other dogs? It probably will get better from rehearsing and maturing. With my anxious, reactive one, I redirect with kibble, prevent with pop, touch or voice and as last resort letting it play out and correct.The latter seems less preferred for his mental state. All in all it's great to have all these tools and perspectives thanks to these great trainers.

Hi Joel, I always see trainers recommending the butt touch, and ordinarily I'd try it, but what do you do when your dog redirects in high stress situations (seeing other dogs is in this category) and would turn around on me if I touched him or was too close in those situations? He has never broken the skin, just ruined the sleeves of a coat or two. I know he is only doing it because he is overwhelmed and frustrated, and he has gotten better with it with some corrections and training, but I still don't feel comfortable doing that at this stage. Any advice would be helpful because I do feel like we are missing a crucial step in fixing his reactivity since we can't do this. Thanks!
@SisyphusDungball2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a professional. My own personal experience is that if your training for reactivity, don't let the dog get into that hyper-stressed / hyper-stimulated state when trying to correct. If they are already in that state, I would say the best thing would be to just remove the dog from the situation. If corrections are working in low stress situations, you can try moving to a situation that is potentially more stressful and try to correct as soon as you notice the dog is ramping up their reactivity. I also don't know your dog or your situation. If your dog is erratic or "turns" on you randomly in situations where the stress level should be low, you may want to see a vet and determine if the dogs is in pain or perhaps has a neurological issue.
@cianta25762 жыл бұрын
@@SisyphusDungball Thank you! He has gotten better and does not redirect quite as much. I need to get better at correcting before the ramp up, it is hard because he goes from 0-100 so fast once he sees something like another dog. With enough time, and walking away, coming back after a few minutes, he starts to calm down and is able to sit/lie down around the dog. My problem now is he's so startle-able. We'll be laying there talking, another dog not far away, if the dog moves or someone gets up, it triggers him to blow up and start barking/lunging once or twice, then he goes and calms himself down and looks/sniffs around the room etc. Even if no one moves, it's like he's fine until suddenly hes not. We were doing the same thing, he was lying probably 5 feet from another dog. She didn't move in the slightest, wasn't looking at him, and he suddenly jumped up and started barking like he'd been startled, but nobody moved. He has been taken to the vet and fully evaluated. Beyond some anxiety which he is on a low dose of medication to manage it day-to-day, he's perfectly healthy. Neurologically of course we can't really know for sure. He is a year old now and has mellowed out a lot, he is good with other dogs at a pretty far distance, but he has improved. Hopefully with enough exposure he'll start to feel more comfortable and relax a little. Oh if only Joel wasn't across the country!

In short: I had 2 cats (males, 10 and 12y old) before we adopted our labrador/shepperd mix. The cats bailed for a few weeks (they could get inside a room where the dog couldn't get into for food and water), but now the dog has kind of "claimed" the house and garden and he chases the cats when he sees them. I regret that a lot, because I'm sure our oldest cat would give him company when we are working. Thanks.

I adopted a dog from Spain (greyhound). the shelter said he would be good with cats but once home he was rude to the cats and wanted to grab them when they ran. it really helps to get angry during an outburst; 'HEY! have you gone mad!” and then make yourself very big and really feel that anger. also say "no" and "leave it" every time he focuses on the cats. of course, reward a lot the good behavior l, eat cookies together with the cats. My dog now gets along very well with the cats. keep going, it’ll be fine :-)
@Int3x0r2 жыл бұрын
@@Denisedf1994 Thanks. That's what I do, but it's hard for the cats, because they run away all the time so I can't get the dog and cats to get to know each other. By running away they only trigger the instinct of the dog. I guess it will take some time :)

@@Int3x0r exact same. Mine gets along OK but if there's a distance more than a few feet, the dog rushes cat and I can't break it she's so tunnel visioned.

My Anatolian shepherd mix is so much worst then that lol. Butt flips don't work. I even got to a point i just pulled up the leash until he was in the air choking (and thats a 88 pound dog) and still going crazy while choking. For me, after i tried so many thing and so many ways and so much money, a prong collar did the worked in less then a day. I am very very gentle with the collar. the first corrections were harsh because he went forward and basically corrected himself. but after two or three times, that was it. Hopefully, in a few months he will get in the habit of moving away from people and dogs he doesn't like and i could take the prong off.

I read this and I thought it just sounded like animal abuse. Where on earth is the fun in that. I’m in the UK and luckily prong collars aren’t allowed. Just horrible, brute force is not the answer. Ditch the collar.
@amitkoren9482 жыл бұрын
@@jackieknight5804 That collar is the best thing i ever done with him. After 3.5 years and about 5 or 6 trainers, he thinks twice before trying to attack other dogs. There shouldn't be any fun in attacking others. Its bad. But now he is manageable around other dogs and now he can learn to have fun around them. Unfortunately you sound so narrow minded that you think if someone uses prong then all he does is yanking the prong yelling no. Thats what happens when he attacks other dogs, thats not even close to all i do with the dog. So, UK do not allow prong, they prefer to kill the dogs they cannot fix with treats and damage the throats of the dogs they try to manage with flat collar. good job. Too bad you see abuse but not 3.5 years of effort, persistence and thousands of dollars. Thats how blind you are.

what do you do if the correction is what sets the dog off because they keep pulling at the dogs

This comment is not related to the video but I have a question or video suggestion. How would you handle a dog that is a Houdini at getting out of the yard? Watch them constantly and Mark and punish the behavior when they try? I have a pit that can get over even a 7 foot fence, we had to spend thousands at our last place building a fence with planks facing upward to make it 12 foot and even then he learned to find weak boards knock them out jumping up and at them then would jump up and squeeze through. What’s the best way, besides exercise to get rid of excess energy since he’s high drive/energy, to stop that jumping the fence behavior??? I’m really curious what your approach would be or if you’ve ever had to work with a dog that had this issue??? Please answer or make a video!

I’m so obsessed with all your videos and with our puppy she’s gotten remarkably better at everything! But I have a VERY stubborn American foxhound who is 4 years old and I was wondering if you have any videos or tips to help with stubborn dogs? He knows his commands but chooses when to listen, he’s very leash reactive after being attacked at a dog park and he’s 85 pounds which is more than half of what I weigh so any tips would be so helpful. Thank you so much for your videos

My 6 yo border collie mix is also a rescue( got him at 2). A few years ago he was attacked at a dog park and his and my anxiety both ramped up. Before that he would play with any dog! Using a gentle leader and the doorway training really helps!

When you say gentle leader, do you mean halti? So when you’re correcting the dog it’s pulling on the dog’s snout not neck, right? Just want to clarify. Thanks.

Aw man. I wanted our dog to walk like that. Had it trained pretty well in our 3 month puppy too. He's a Samoyed. So he likes to fight and bite the leash when he doesn't get to be in charge.

One of my dogs wants to pull me out the door and the other fears leaving the house. I carry the fearful one across the street and then she'll walk loose leash but the puller I need to try this with I guess on a walk without the calm one

I wish we had areas like this around us. We cannot get 2 houses down the street because there are barking dogs (behind a fence) in like every other house. We literally cannot even leave our street to go practise somewhere else :(

I have a 3 month old puppy. I know I should be lenient with him but I'm afraid he will get used to going wherever he wants while on the leash (I want him to explore the world and understand it more) and when he's older it will be harder to break him when I do decide to be more serious

@@Soundless_life he's alright . I can control him most times with little leash reactivity. However I can't control him when he sees this female dog he really fancies. Her smells drives him nuts. I don't want to get him neutered so I have to avoid her

Wondering if you have ever worked with disabled/reduced mobility dogs? They all may experience these situations, but tugging to get their attention is no longer so easy as it could make them fall over ..any thoughts?

Hi Joel, I noticed that you are correcting the behavior instead of moving farther away. I have a reactive older dog (3 year old lab) who people have been telling me to move farther away from the distraction. Ive been telling people not to approach us (hes friendly but doesn't like men getting to close to me) and yesterday had to walk across a whole soccer field to get him off hyper fixating on a small dog. Should I just stay our course and correct him like this? Im afraid of looking mean myself or looking like I have a mean dog when he just acts like a lunatic on lead and hes a really friendly sweet dog otherwise..

I have a 7 month old Australian Shepherd mix who gets excited around other dogs but recently we had an incident after walking past 2 reactive dogs who started attacking eachother after seeing my dog which caused her to go into a barking frenzy. Is there anything I can do to prevent her from getting reactive due to other dogs reactive energy?

What is your mindset when the dog is reactive? Does the dog pick up your mindset? Because a lot of people talk about that and also about energie.

Hi Joel. I have a 9 month old pup that is currently right in the middle of a fear period. My question is, What do I do when my dog is actually very afraid of something while we are on the leash? He saw an RC car for the first time recently on a walk and immediately tried to bolt in the other direction. Others are also free to provide feedback, I just want to help my dog become trustworthy enough to not be worried about when we go hiking and to respond the best I can.
