Thanks Joel, very good video. I used to be a dog groomer and I soon realized how being serious, calm and firm helps especially difficult and wiggly dogs. It doesn't mean you are not kind. Dogs that realize you are in charge get done done much quicker, so there is less stress for the dog and it's therefore kinder. I sometimes wished modern dog training schools would understand and teach that.

This is the most accurate description I have seen in the internet of how ABs are and how to approach/calm them. The problem with this breed is that they are extra happy dogs, you said it right, every single minute is the best minute ever so they get easily overstimulated, and it gets hard to deal with an overstimulated all muscle type of dog. You are also vey accurate to disintegrate “energy” into all its levels, emphasizing in tone: for my male AB, tone is the fine line where he goes from over happy to confused to reactive. This is why I have never introduced him to young children, I’m not sure how he’ll be if exposed to high pitch or cry (we’re all adults in our household, living remote with cero chances to have children around, so we are fine with that) Those two, Jax and Gemma are BEAUTIFUL! Again, thanks for presenting ways to better understanding this breed, I feel that ABs, Pitts and bully breeds in general are somewhat misunderstood

First and foremost, regular exercise will keep these dogs content. A sedentary owner will be a terrible person to own an AB unless he gets the laziest Johnson on the planet. If you keep the dogs exercised, they will be much easier to deal with. Also, ABs tend to be very dominant and what this video talked about is good for that part. You don't want your dog thinking he is the boss.

Unfortunately true. Bully breeds are strong dogs, so people are afraid of them. They're not more likely to be aggressive than any other breed. I plan on getting a pit bull for my next dog and I hope I can be a good advocate.

I have had American Bulldogs as pets and bred them for decades. (I no longer do) The breed is DEFINITELY not for everyone. I actually turn down a LOT of people that want one of my puppies and they often get really angry but I am doing them a favor. This breed requires a VERY high level of exercise as well as a skilled owner. These dogs will often try to be the alpha in a home and unless the owner understands this, they will have a very tough road. Temperament obviously plays a big role and some ABs are beta and submissive but a large percentage will not be.

With American Bulldogs the training doesn't stop if you have a high drive dog. They will always be challenging you. I raised AB protection dogs and quite a few became Schutzhund certified, even Sch III which is the highest level you can achieve. If you want a calm manageable dog, pick the laziest dog in the litter. The one that totally ignores you when you meet them.

I've tried to convey to them how to be a calm confident leader. I talk about body language, tone of voice, and energy but I never defined it as a "way of touching" or "claiming your space". Great advice Joel! I think that for people who not only have experience working with animals but have mastered communication with animals it’s often hard to explain the “energy“ part of it. One of the reasons I love this channel so much is you just get straight to the point. This is stuff that anyone can do and it just takes lots of practice, many repetitions and dedication/perseverance.

absolutely! we had a border collie shepard mix come into the shelter and he was a farm dog so the owner says. hes unneutered and hes ALOT, marks everything, dominance, like he does it to chairs, benches, crates, nobody is gonna want him till hes fixed, im not in the shelter enough to untrain the marking behavior your ways are very effective and i love it(:

you have to be what you want from the dog. you have to hold that emotion you want in your mind and stand strong in that. we all have mirror neurons which is in part why we can tell how someone is feeling without words. we're picking up on their energy that they are holding/thinking. It's using a no nonsense approach, like when Joel says 'I dont care anymore", you're not overbearing but you are confident and direct about what behavior/action you want or will tolerate from the dog. dogs live in the moment and emotion/energy is moment to moment. learning to act instead of react is key.

I have an American Bulldog, I love her so much. She really is just a goofy, go lucky baby made out of pure muscle. She doesn’t even run into me, she won’t make eye contact and if she does, she looks away. She looks at me for permission before doing anything. I love her, she’s the best. Watching these Bulldogs play warmed my heart. ☺️

Thanks for another great video! You mentioning the Newfoundland reminded me of my Great Pyrenees from years back. Somehow I knew to never let him pull me. When I knew he was going to hit end of leash I would get a "baseball bat" grip on the leash and go into a power stance. He was 150 lbs..I was 130 lbs. He never moved me but the look on his face was humorous. This usually only happened if we past cows...lol

" Touch and Tone" is something I learned on my own a few years ago when we got an American Bulldog that was four years old that had been in an apartment his whole life and we got him as a rescue. This poor guy had so much energy and was starving for attention. We live in the country and the first time our daughter came to the house and opened the door he was off like a shot for about a half hour. Some harness walking and spending time using " touch" and "tone" as I called it, and several 1/4 mile walks a day, he can now be walked next to me with no leash and is an absolute joy.

When you find yourself in a stare-out with one of those troublemakers, it's _really_ important you keep looking until it looks away. If you look away first; they win, and the struggle just got worse. Don't yawn either; that signals that you want to diffuse the situation. You have to let them try to diffuse it by looking away. However; some warning is needed. Dogs that don't take sh*t from anyone and try to solve their problems with fighting, may try to attack someone that's staring at them like they mean business. Obviously Joel is talking about you and your dogs, assuming you know them well enough. Don't go all in on a staredown with a dog you just got from a shelter.

My husband would have staring contests with our daughter's mastiff. Started when she was young. He never looked away. Evolved into a game that she would initiate at times. She would end it by looking away and "talking to him" while wiggling for her pets.

This is exactly how I have learned to deal with my 2 AB/Shar Pei mix dogs and they are very responsive. My female CeCe just turned a year and Nico is about 8 months, same parents, different litter and both look nothing like a Shar pei thankfully. I have an older Pitbull so I have dealt with a hard headed and high energy dog before, but these two are way bigger and so much work yet so much fun. I have to raise my voice to get their attention at times, but they are very smart dogs, I love them so much. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

This is great and those dogs are stunning. I’ll add that a touch, a look, the tone of your voice and how you take space from a dog are not energy though, they are methods to convey our energy. All energy has a frequency, we are emitting energy of different frequencies all the time in what we say and do. Imagine a person walks into a room in a really bad mood. Without talking to them you can feel their energy, it’s really negative, at it’s worst you can almost see a black cloud over their head! Now imagine a child on Xmas eve, even without looking at them you can feel their excitement. Or, you meet a stranger and something about them makes you feel on edge. That is what is meant by energy, it is an actual force, although we can’t see it, we are designed to feel it. The problem is that the more we’re surrounded by energy blockers like wifi and concrete, the less we’re able to feel it. Dogs pick up on our energy. As a generalisation, it’s why they can become fearful, aggressive or over protective when living with a fearful or neurotic owner. Why they listen to some people but not others. Why they often get over excited by children but calm around the elderly. Why they play up when we’re stressed and cuddle in when we’re relaxed. Dogs are the perfect mirror for our energy, be aware of that and being around dogs becomes so much more rewarding.

I've shared this with my husband the non dog person in the family. It might be something to actively train owners to do (on video if they are willing). I've had trouble with this in the past since my "natural" stance is pretty laid back. I had to watch video of myself to learn to project stronger for my horses. Fortunately the same body language works on dogs. Another thought I had was that some people, women in particular, have trouble with pop verses pull on walks in your videos. When I took a horse training class years ago, they had us practice the difference with a lead rope attached to a fence rail, and then with another student holding the end of the lead, so we could practice the skill before trying it on our horse. My horses and dogs both walk on loose leads, taking their cue off my body position these days.
