No friends in 4 years - Can Prince save this reactive dog?

As most people will say, they are more like a cat not a dog. Not a dog breed for a first time dog owner, unless they are fully willing to do the proper training.

@@kurrupoppo6937 I had a cat before and grew up around them. I told this to a breeder and she said that's probably better if I want my first dog to be a Shiba, cuz people who grew up with dog dogs usually get confused of their behavior and it becomes difficult for them to deal with that.

In the first it's being reinforced for a behaviour its doing, in the second it's being reinforced for a behaviour its not doing which cant happen because you cant reinforce a behaviour that not present.

@@crotchet1586 I reinforce when my Shiba *doesn't* growl at other dogs by giving him a treat. I am reinforcing the absence of the undesirable behaviour when the potential trigger is present. I hope that helps!

​@@crotchet1586 Well, just to clear things up: No living being (Human or Animal) can "not do something". We still actively do something like using our senses constantly. This means that in our situation at 9:04 the dog gets reinforced for focusing his senses at the person on the leash with a different intention than before where at this point you need to know how to realize it by only looking at the Shiba and the other dog on the leash kept walking by without the Shiba looking again (THIS GETS REINFORCED). It literally could be anything else for different situations. By the way, I also think the pull was a little too early because the Shiba already started turning and changing his look like 0.1-0.2 seconds before the pull. But I can still accept that because 1st it is not easy to react to that as human reaction time is like 0.28, or so, on average and 2nd you want to reach the point where this Shiba never looks like that at an other dog again, so earlier is better. And it worked for the situation 1 second later. The rest is just redoing it.

I agree 100% with everything you said. There's just nothing as good for dogs than being able to play nicely with a friend, off leash, and nothing can replace it. Also about people automatically leaving if their dog has had a minor scuffle with another. It teaches them exactly what you said. Best thing is for them to learn to stay near that dog, calmly, because that's what we want. I wish more people knew this. Maybe now, more will and will practice it. Excellent video!

I always enjoy your videos. 12years ago our husky found a dog and we brought him home. It turned out that he is highly aggressive towards dogs and people. Nobody ever came to claim him so we kept him, because who else would try to deal with him? To us he's the sweetest boy. We found out that with lots of time he can get used to people. When it came to dogs I counted on the pack mentally. We brought two rescues home, one male and one female. He had already met them and it went well. It took a few months but in the end we had a great pack. There's just nothing like watching a happy pack running and playing. By now he's used to us bringing home a new rescue every now and then and he adjust much faster. Of course the fact that he listens to every command helps a great deal. I always enjoy your videos, because no matter how long you have been dealing with dogs, there is always something new to learn or something that works better than what I've done all my life. Thanks for sharing your videos and knowledge.

@@Asto508 I was just about to say that. A lot of owners bolt with their dog, in shock that your dog attacked their dog. Then it makes it difficult for dogs to chill out and continue playing or going their own way in piece. Also, a lot of people misinterpret dog fights as killing-to-death type of fights when they are mostly reactive issues where they snap and go nuts to scare off other dogs/people, "disagreements" like resource guarding reactions, or harsher corrections from another dog. Depends on the situation.

@@tilly_s Yes, I've had this happen. My dog doesn't attack, but does defend himself if necessary. A lot like Prince. If another dog goes after mine (providing it's not serious, no harm done or intended), I try to get people to stick around for a few minutes with their dogs, but few are willing. They don't get that it's the best thing for both dogs, and that dogs move on quickly if we allow them to.

6:11 This is VERY typical behaviour seen in Japanese spitz breeds. Not just the Shiba Inu, but Kai Ken, Shikoku Inu, Kishu Ken, and Hokkaido Ken. Akita Inus don't do it as much (since they have mastiff in their ancestry they're not as snappy). I'm from Japan so I see it all the time everywhere. These dogs act as if they are the king/queen of the neighbourhood - walking with a strut, tails and heads up high. They just loooove to show off to other dogs how "strong" they are. They don't try to dominate every single dog they come into contact with. That is not kingly behaviour (lol). Just showing off. But when a dog or suspicious human comes close to them, they have that look on their face and that very hard stare as displayed in the video. And if you step into their threshold, they would start barking violently or attack. They are fiercely protective of their personal space. 6:29 THIS. This sudden switch from "Hello there. Let me smell you" to "I'm the boss. Back down, son" attitude. VERY typical. It's because of this sudden switch that Japanese breeds can be so dangerous. A LOT of people think that their dog suddenly attacked out of the blue, but in reality that's how these dogs act. You just didn't know because you didn't do enough research before choosing a breed. And then a lot of Shiba Inus get dumped into shelters because the owners can't control their aggression. "OMG my dog attacks so randomly". No he doesn't. You're just ignoring all the warning signals. These dogs are very honest about their feelings. On top of that they hate being told what to do. Smelling the other dog but not letting them smell is another typical Japanese breed behaviour. It's so unfair. LOL

Dogs are so interesting. My cattle/pit bull was reactive to other dogs and the only thing that worked was to turn other dogs into the source for high value treats. Now, he pretty much can be around any dog. Prince is a spectacular dog and it's amazing how intelligent he is.

@@kaylamarie2037 Of Course. When my dog encountered another dog he would immediately try to lunge at the the other dog. At that point, I would correct him by giving him a good tug on the leash and in a loud voice I would say "YES" (you can use any word you want) as I pulled him away and immediately gave him a high value treat (usually boiled chicken). Eventually (about 2 months later) every time he saw another dog he started turning to me first instead of the other dog, because he knew what was coming (delicious chicken!) Now, almost every time he sees another dog he has learned that the other dog is the stimulus for him to get his favorite treat. Now I really don't have to treat him anymore. I just give him praise and a good pat and he is happy! You have to be very patient, but it is well worth the time invested. Good Luck.

That's great you trusting your boy Prince to teach the Shiba. From when he does the lip lick, backing off, then play pose he definitely knows what he's doing. Compared to other videos where an unruly dog needs to be put in their place. Prince can sense what that dog needs and acts accordingly. Also judging from the fact this dog hasn't interacted with any other dog in 4 years and then is running along friendly with Prince shows how good he is at his job. Good boy Prince!

I'm no teacher but found out my dog was. Spending so much time together(even sharing the bed), he was always observing & learning. I talked to him as I would a person & shared a few beers. He started introducing hidden talents to me. People would ask how I taught him to do so much & listen the way he does. I'd say, I didn't teach him that, he taught me. We learned together. Shamrock aka Rock was a Red Nose & Staffordshire mixed bull terrier. Born Valentine's Day 2001(a gift from cupid), died in my arms St Patrick's Day 2016. Patty's day is still a bit saddening but what better day to honor my Shamrock 🍀? The way Prince behaves with confidence & knows where he stands reminds me so much of Rock. Almost telepathic. A ton of time & love have been given to Prince. I'm glad he's able to share it. 😇✌️

Some people would say he was a clown but he enjoyed having fun like you or I would, just being part of the gang but if I wasn't home or inside asleep, nobody was coming through my gates. Didn't matter how well they knew him. Of course I let him come in or go out as he pleased. While on guard, he was very muscular while sitting proud & looked very intimidating but during hangout time, he enjoyed an occasional beer & loved wearing my sunshades while wearing a big smile. Kinda wish I could share a couple pics so he could bring smiles here as well. Sorry so much. He meant almost everything to me. 😇✌️

Shibas need so much consistent socialization. They can have very intense energy and standoffish personalities but if you can unwind some of that energy and establish them into a spot in the pecking order that isnt on top, they do so much better socially when they feel secure that someone else is in charge.

Oh wow that's terrible, I was at a dog show last summer and met many shibas and all of them behaved well. It's just a matter of owner training them properly or bothering to train them at all. Shibas are a challenging but also a trendy breed. Trendiness attracts incompetent owners.

When I was 20 I took possession of a red Doberman he wad 9 months old he had been trained to fight. He'd see a dog and want to kill them. Took me a year of working with him. But I got that training out of his mind. The reason I did take him was because with children he was amazing. People that were afraid of him because of his size. He got to 180 pounds. He would literally crawl to that person and whine at them until they would pet him. There were times I'd have to tackle him to het his attention. I've never been afraid of dogs so breaking a dog fight has never been an issue. Like you say you have to be the boss. After about a year of working with him he finally got to where I could take him in a group of dogs and people and never worry about him. I just wish with him I'd have gotten him at 6 weeks. He'd have been a totally different dog. He made the most amazing pups.

I love that your best dog for rehabilitation is a doberman. My pitbull is the same way. She brings dogs out of their shell, can play with many dogs that normally can't, gets them to play with her and teaches them how to act respectful. She's 11 years old and has helped me raise all of our dogs, and my kids, too!!

Reminds me so much of my rescue dog. He's a little bigger, maybe 50lb or so & muscular. It was pretty clear he was not used to other dogs, or anything actually. Used to manifest itself by him staring directly at them & kinda working himself up when he would then aggressively jump on their back & try scare them off. Luckily his tail gave away his stress levels & I could use this as an indicator. Took a long time to get him sorted, had to take him around all the dogs I could, the bigger the better & get him comfortable. A couple of interesting points I noted, one was that he never actually bit another dog, he just sounded and looked very aggressive but was trying to scare them away. I could understand other dogs body language better than he could. Another point I quickly noted was the fact that once he had met a particular dog and got comfortable, he remembered that dog, even years later. He's great now.

Your videos helped me take the dog and human agression out of a crazy 1 year old malanois we adopted. Beckman's boot camp we called it. Two weeks of bossing her around, with simple instructions , and never taking no for an answer. O tolerance for any display of agression of any kind. Worked like a charm. Swarming season hit early. 5:59 agree 100% been taking my dog to the dog park. Had a bunch of people here saying that it was a bad idea. 😂 it was the best thing I’ve done for my dog. She was always so scared to meet other dogs. First few times she was tucking her tail and laying as other dogs came to smell. She would stay away from the other dogs. We stayed positive and played fetch there. Now she has so much more confidence. Seeing her run around playing with other dogs kinda makes me feel guilty for not doing that earlier. At home she is the chillest dog now. I’m really proud of her.

My dog's favorite activity is meeting with a small group of very friendly dogs in the park and playing and chasing each other and chasing a ball together. They get a great work out and have so much fun.They all seem happy and very tired when they are done. My dog is a Rough Coated Collie, like Lassie, and he is very friendly to all people and dogs so group play is great with him.

Thank you allways for your videos man. I have a BC and I'm allways looking for something to improve in our training, our relationships and so on. Sometimes we meet some dogs but he prefer to play ball with me than interact with other dogs, I dont know if he is afraid or if the interaction that hey have is in a very small amount of time, but I expect that goes better everytime. I would add another factor into why she didn't go after any of the dogs. from my experience if the owner if nervous then there is a higher likelihood that the dog "freaks out" or becomes protective. I think this is from the owner not fully becoming the leader of the pack and therefore the dog is trying to fill in the gaps. after the dog and owner experienced you and Prince showing that it is a safe place and the you are in charge they both relaxed a bit. but like you said there are a multitude of reasons why the dog showed such a remarkable change in sucha. short period of time. I've told people that say training a dog is hard if they have kids you invest in teaching your kids how to be good respectful people, right? your kids haven't turned out to be little jerks, right? then why not invest in your dog as well. afterall aren't they just 4 legged kids? the light bulb goes on after that. great work as always!!!!

Joel this is one of the funniest videos you've put out. And, one of the most wholesome. Rehabilitating dogs is something special, teaching them skills they need help on. Prince did not come off that porch step when she ran up, he was wary, she came on intense. I think Prince's playful, laid back attitude helped her relax and come out of her shell. She is pretty bold, but seeing her make a friend near broke my heart, she does want to be with some dogs. Probably not best for dog parks. I admit I too took my dogs away after a fight with another, will think on this. Sorry to see Connory get the snaps, he is a good boy and he has helped in the process. Just wanted to plug those Wolffish skins you recommend for chewing satisfaction, they are amazing I keep getting them! Great uses, thank you.

my family and I owned two american bulldogs that were from the same litter and when they had their first fight with eachother, it really got worse from there.. we needed to keep them separate all the time, so we thought.. years after the dogs passed due to cancer i found out a dog sitter we had let them out together, and they didnt fight… it was us as the owners of the dogs that really attributed to their downfall of not socializing well. We were always scared of having to break up a fight. That was the worst thing we could have done for them. There were instances after that as well where the two american bullies could be around other dogs, but it was brief and unintentional. Thanks for this video.

This is exactly what I need for my dog! I was like "I'm not sure what 5o look for with Body Language with her and other dogs" I know she freaks out. Thankfully she sorta tends to match whatever body language the other dog gives off.. but she still doesn't have a friend and still tends to freak out. I've decided, This is the year for Dog Parks though. I managed to get her pretty leash trained and she is now sweet with most humans. (Always a work in progress.) :) Thank you!
