Excellent video Gareth. It’s amazing what you can capture just wandering around, especially in an unfamiliar place. My favourite shot of yours was number 3 the guy sitting down having a fag. Mean and moody. David’s pictures are annoyingly great too but don’t tell him I said 😁😁 Explaining your shots at the end of the video will help others to understand your thought process too. That was a nice touch. Already looking forward to the next trip xx

Like your work just wondering if you've ever done a shoot with just your phone? I say this as I use it for this kind of thing as I can literally just point and shoot without worrying about settings, focus etc. In my normal work I use pro kit but the freedom a phone gives you plus the advances in quality, (especially shooting raw), make them perfect for this.

Great vid Gareth. My fave pic was the charismatic guy (I think you said it was your fave too), he gave such a great look at the camera. You asked at the start if you'd missed any shots: I thought the Wanderers cafe on that corner was interesting, because there were people in there watching you. It might have been possible to get people walking through that shadow and include the cafe people too. I know that can be risky because you don't want to get too cluttered, but it might have worked. Cheers anyway, loving your photos.

I like the interplay of two shadows created in image: X10F6757, at time 19:36. The girl's head and shoulder create a white, negative space, ground shadow which matches the bulbous shape of the black shadow of the building. If cropped to the bottom right quadrant, with just her lower legs and trainers, the shadow contrast might work as an abstract.

My favourites were the guy at the table, glaring up at you, in Chinatown, the hipster with no face in peaked cap, and the old bloke and his shadow, crossing the street, it was partly his posture and face that just made it, I also very much like the guy with his shopping bags on the tram lines, the fact that his body was cut off, concentrating attention on the silhouette and the bags, I wouldn’t have thought to do that. You’ve given me a lot to think about, I love street photography, but I don’t take it that stage further, I concentrate on capturing the characters without giving as much thought to their interaction with the surroundings, I need to think about sorting my settings out, like you said, so I can give more thought to the composition , in the moment!

As a Mancunian, I’m disappointed you used Black and White for most of them. We’re famed for a city with a similar aesthetic to old New York, with strong orange bricks etc. I just feel the B&W, as much as I like to use it now and again, takes away from the great light etc.

if i was photographing 'old new york' id use black and white for that too.. sorry your disappointed!

It’s just constructive criticism, but if that’s your style, glad you’re happy 👍👍

I much prefer bw unless colour adds something to the image. I will look into your information. I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks for the comment. I do value your feedback 👍🏻😊

Yeah didn’t mean to come across a tw@ lol. I’ve shot in the city so many times, and for me, B&W rarely works, unless it’s a miserable, rainy day here (not as often as people think 😊). Maybe it’s a good subject for a video. How colour can add/detract etc

I agree you don’t Photo kids without the parents consent. I would not have like that with my two when they were small and it’s the right choice even if it is an innocent encounter. As for that security guard I think he is legally wrong because as it a public space then technically it’s allowed. However with the mantra of doing good with my camera I would not worry and comply with his request.

thanks for watching mate.. its not a public space in this vid.. its private property, so he was right and we knew that. Watch my cardiff video when the security guard approaches up on public property.. thats a different matter! :-)

Absolutely love the one with the flare and the shadow of that chap was just about perfect in my mind. It almost looks like a cartoon reflection. Great work Gareth 👍

Number 8 wins for me. You need to understand the difference between private private and and private public access land. Outside on private land which is designed to be used by the public, it's all fair game. Inside is a different matter. It's all down to absolute privacy, reasonable expectation of privacy and no expectation privacy in public. In the first, no photograph. In the second, no photography at an ATM or in shops, etc., but elsewhere where there are many other members of the public its fair game. In the third, all photography is legal. Being polite and courteous is a key aspect of public photography. And if a security guard harasses you, tell them that they are doing it, and then demand their SIA badge as they MUST identify themselves. And then immediately after ask them if they understand the concept of random checks. Two totally unrelated points, but the point is to make them connect up random check and SIA in their head - as if you are doing a random check on behalf of the SIA, even though you never said anything about it, it al being in their head.

Oh, and security guards are the worst trained people in the world in regards what is allowed and what isn't. Security guards think that having a fluorescent jacket means that they have all the power when in reality they have none.

hey thanks for that info.. im always happy to walk away and stay in a good mood instead of arguing like we did in our cardiff video.. i felt crap and wasnt in the mood to shoot or film after that confrontation..

BE DIFFERENT, lets take high contrast shots of people with strong shadows....really? I'm not saying I didn't like the shots, especially the Peaky Blinder with the phone and Fagin; but most of the shots I've seen you take before. Maybe you need to intentionally copy someone else's style to start to see differently again or find a 'project' that you wouldn't normally tackle: animals, colour, towers, handrails, hats, wide angle, get someone to just tell you one word and interpret it; break the mould! You keep talking about trying to be different and then falling back into your comfort zone. I love your vlogs, I love your work but you seem to be wanting a new angle on your photography, BE DIFFERENT! (Easier said than Done) All the best.

Very sorry to disappoint but i feel i did capture shots different from my norm.. "You keep talking about trying to be different and then falling back into your comfort zone" never mentioned it in a video before.. hence the point in this video.. "lets take high contrast shots of people with strong shadows....really?" i read that as a bit mean.. hope it wasn't meant to be! The high contrast shots weren't the images id referred to as being different.. the peaky shot, the bus mechanic, guy standing in front of lets talk beauty.. i feel these are different to my normal images.. just my opinion tho of course! appreciate your comment..

Just a fellow Brummie being sarcastic (lowest form of humour - I know). I did say I liked the Peaky Blinder and Fagin. Forgot to mention that I really liked the 'Lets talk Beauty' shot. (Appeals to my/our sense of irony - can recommend 'Photography and Humour' by Louis Kaplin reaktion books) But you have taken lots of shots of single people in b&w with strong architectural geometry around/behind them. You use strong light and shadow in the same way. What I'm trying to say is that the shots are very structured, nothing wrong with that, as long as it doesn't box you in. You did mention in the Florence vlog about trying to take different shots and feeling frustrated - I did respond with a long spiel about Architectural Multinationalism and cultural appropriation (it was a long boring comment, I don't blame you for not remembering it!). So I hold to the opinion that you are looking for a new and inspired way to take photo's; but so are we all, as soon as we recognise we have a style we want to shake it up and do something different. Thanks for replying. I was beginning to think I'd crossed the line into rudeness (probably did, apologies) and you'd decided a dignified silence was the best response. :-)
