If you look at the original song composition from Disney themselves, you'll see the intro to this was always written out. Even in both the original and remastered soundtrack of the movie, there is this intro narration by Jeremy Irons (who played Scar) in these renditions. As for the voices still in the song, it's probably just there to help the performer to stay in track in terms of keeping tempo later on in the song.
