(READ THIS ITS RELEVANT THE VIDEO) parasites called Nematomorphs, which are different than nematodes or earthworms* which are more familiar to many people. Nematomorphs are really cool because they use at least two hosts, and have to travel between completely different environments to complete their lifecycle. Life for a Nematomorph host is extremely brutal, because one host must get eaten while the other must drown. At the end of the lifecycle, where the adult takes over the mind of her host and forces it to drown in a body of water. The adult is free-living, and lives in a pond or river. The adult doesn’t eat, because it doesn’t have a digestive tract. Or a circulatory system. Or a respiratory system. It’s basically a swimming reproductive system, and females may lay over one million eggs in her lifetime. These eggs hatch, and there’s a short-lived larval form which finds an aquatic insect, like a mosquito. The Nematomorph then hangs tight while the insect does it’s thing and turns into an adult. After the insect leaves the water, like mosquitoes do, it needs to get eaten by the host the adult develops in. After getting eaten, the parasite migrates to the abdomen of the second host and begins absorbing nutrients through it’s skin until it’s time to hijack the host and emerge.

I read on Google that there have been accidental infestations in vertebrates like horses and humans. Especially in humans in China and Japan. Reading the article I would NEVER go in fresh water in Southeast Asia.

Time for a lesson! Those were Hairworms. Usually their host is a cricket, but they can infect crickets' predators if they're eaten. Hairworms basically mind control their host to take them to water. There's a video about it on the Deep Look channel.

Horsehair worms can be discovered in damp areas, such as watering troughs, swimming pools, streams, puddles, and cisterns. The adult worms are free-living, but the larvae are parasitic on arthropods, such as beetles, cockroaches, mantids, orthopterans, and crustaceans.

Admiral Sandwich mantids mostly lay their ootheca on branches, though in captivity they’ll often lay them on the lids of their enclosures. I’ve heard of some instances of mantids swimming but I’ve never seen it in action- in my experience mantis + too much water = death. They do need humidity to shed properly but being in water is pretty insane. Saw someone above mention the parasite is most common in crickets which happen to be one of the adult mantis’ favorite treats! Amazing little critters! And they make surprisingly dope pets.
