Deftones were considered art the time a nu-metal band. Nu-metal was characterised by adding some elements of dance, hip hop or whatever DJ's do, and combining it with heavy rock/metal/industrial sounds. Limp Bizkit is the epitome of early nu-metal; but Deftones were defintely one of the less "nu" metal bands (with a corresponding increase in quality compared to you know what was it Crazy Town or someshit).
