Today James is looking at be quiet!'s latest air cooler, the Pure Rock 2. It's a compact, 4-heatpipe cooler that uses a Pure Wings 2 fan. As James finds out, it is very quiet - but just how good is the thermal performance? read the written review here: bit.ly/2LhQCWy

Isn't it funny how at 7:32 you still screw down the screws in a diagonal pattern on the mounting bracket even though it doesn't have an effect on the cooler itself there? lol

I believe if you normalize the noise like running at 36 db it would perform better than other due to it being so quiet. This is worth it for budget people that want silence and decent cooling.

It's amazing how prevalent non-normalized "reviews" were... and still are. Performance means nothing without noise, unless you're in a server room.

why didn't you test it on ryzen 3000 platform?? we already know how the offset die position of ryzen 3000 affect thermal performance of some cpu cooler. what about retest it?

I was surprised by this test, but the 9900K is a power hungry, hot beast of a chip. I have the PR2 and it keeps my Ryzen 2600 running at 62C at max load, and it's barely audible. I think for lower TPD cpus, this cooler is a solid budget option.

Something is off with this. I am using the Pure Rock 2 and the thermal performance is amazing. Here? It's extremely "bad" and "disappointing" being out performed by other air coolers. Yeah something ain't right. This channel seems like the only one with such results.

SoundWave Decepticon Soldier You should’t wish for that. The AMD base mounting system is garbage. Intel’s holds out better in general with less risk of breaking vs a tiny bracket that clips into some plastic. Especially for building and selling to customers, AMD’s system is quite poor. Because the coolers almost always break due to shipping, so, RMA.

@@spacecy The cooler comes with a thermal compound coating pre-applied to the base. I did mention this towards the beginning of the video but it may have been worth mentioning again during the installation as you suggest.

The mounting process was just an explaination of how to mount the cooler. Not using thermal paste is smart because you don't waste. In the case this was sarcastic, it's a pretty weak joke :)

Good info on this cooler. You mentioned how easy it would be for a novice to do this, But you did not show putting on any thermal paste, on to the CPU,s. Easy to forget if it is your first build.

I always laugh when I hear a reviewer use words like "Affordable" or "Budget." Because what's 'affordable' to one person might not be 'affordable' to another, and while 'Budget' can mean cheap, it can also mean the amount of money set aside to buy an item. For me, a $1200 custom open loop is 'affordable', and my 'Budget' on my current PC was $4500. They should just say cheap when they mean cheap.

I actually agree. its like when i was told i was buying a "budget" x570 board at $250. I knew what he meant but that makes no sense at all honestly.

Budget most often is used to reference a limitation on expense. Typically on its own it defaults to lower amounts than average and a budget system is a compromise to price limits and buying adequate but not preferred products, while cheap usually denotes either inadequate products or insanely good value depending on context. Usually asshats that have excessive disposable income like to bring up the non issue point you make so that they gain a feeling of superiority by bragging about $1200 custom loops because they had a 5K budget to work with, but in reality feel inadequate because they didn't have the 50K for a fully decked mac pro.
