Writing legislation to criminalize using drugs on public transit is worthless if the laws aren’t enforced and prosecuted.

Revenue is down and it's down because Trimet cultivated a culture of entitlement where people simply get on and off without paying knowing they will almost never get challenged. They then raised the prices so honest commuters are left to subsidize the free loaders.

Lived here all my life, I am currently doing armed security and have for the last 3 years, TriMet does not want to spend the money to prosecute, or pay for any legitimate security, they have unarmed security with no experience that criminals don't feel threatened at all by, not with a lazy DA either, I hate politics, but are leaders are horrible.

As a woman because of previous encounters l would never ride Tri-met or recommend it to other's! No one is held accountable for breaking the law! Born and raised here, used to shop and visit downtown frequently, it's a crime what leadership has allowed to happen, especially losing small businesses.
@frederickbooth79706 ай бұрын
I was born & raised here as well all my 68 years. The last few times I rode Tri-Met it was not even remotely the same as when 1st started riding at 17 when attending PSU. Until each bus & light rail train has old fashioned conductors ensuring fares are paid, bad actors behaving badly are not allowed to ride we will continue to drive. I`m a short man & so I`m vulnerable as well.

I have been on Max about 3-4 times the last six months. Did it feel safe, no especially at the the max stops while waiting for trains. It is not uncommon to see people rolling around on the sidewalks or homeless lurking through the parking lot. Most countries and states have ticket checkers which limits people riding for free and also is a way to make sure things are on the up and up. How can Trimet fix problems when they are not on their trains. Trimet needs to enforce their fees which probably would cut down on a lot of the crimes happening.

Trimet is simply not cost effective anymore. There is no possible way for them to afford putting a paid security guard on every bus, train and street car. If they suddenly announced bankruptcy and/or insolvency, it would not surprise me in the least, but I would be saddened by it.
@GiovanniDuarte-w3e6 ай бұрын
The security guard sucks bro like the majority of them they hang out in the Beaverton Transit Center or the Moda Center I never seen them in like in a hardcore areas like 162nd 122nd and Chinatown. Or even like towards the Clackamas area that's a very hard area of drug users and violence

I travel a lot throughout the US and some international. I can sincerely say Portland is the jankiest, most unsafe, and trashy city in the US, and in most other countries I've travelled to in recent years. It's actually unbelievable how badly this city is failing while other cities thrive.

My view is I'm not sitting back and letting thugs, homeless , drugged up zombies control my life. If I need to take Trimet and i frequently do I take it. I can understand riders fears, as ai have them also. It's just I can't afford to let these trash types impact my life. Otherwise I will be afraid of everything that scares me. People need Trimet to get around and the city and Trimet needs to fix this serious safety issue. HoweverTrimet can't fix Portlands problems that definitely impact Trimet. That's the real root of the problem. Portland let the city get out of control.

I would add that TriMet & Max (& C-Tran) are very good services for the community overall, but overall it's also transporting the (large) segment of locals that most would prefer not to be around/near - misfits. I use it "during the day" for convenience & to avoid problems with parking my vehicle in the city (I'm a bearded old man that doesn't draw attention - typically). The way things are going capitalism will be unaffordable, for many, in major US metropolitan areas - I'm expecting things to continue to get worse. The US "system" has become crippled by many contributing circumstances...

Guarantee you 99% of commentors don't ride Trimet. I ride it multiple times per week. The cases you hear make the news are isolated standout cases. The worst I've seen are the occasional homeless person sleeping on the train or someone under the influence. But even that's not something i encounter daily or even weekly. Is there room for improvement? 110%. Is it as bad as some people portray? Not in my opinion. Should you be diligent and aware of your surroundings? Always - and that extends beyond Trimet.
